Rochester Prep celebrates college acceptances, $3.2M in scholarships
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — As graduation for high school students in Rochester quickly approaches, Rochester Prep celebrated its seniors and their college acceptances in a rally on Friday. All 100 students in the school's graduating class will attend college in the fall and have earned over $3.2 million in scholarships collectively. During the pep rally, students walked the stage to their favorite songs and announced the college they will attend. Nearly all Rochester Prep students are reported to come from predominantly Black, Hispanic, or low-income communities. Organizers describe the event as one of the most anticipated events of the school year, as it leaves underclassmen feeling inspired and empowers students through recognizing the challenges they've overcome. 2025 Commencement ceremonies for Rochester colleges and universities Some students have received enough scholarship money that they will only have to pay less than $2,500 or $1,000 a year for their studies. Rochester Prep elementary students participate in Autism Awareness Walk
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Elementary students at Rochester Prep recognized Autism Awareness Month with an Autism Walk on Thursday morning. Students at the St. Jacobs Campus wore shirts for the event that celebrated 'minds of all kinds' to show their support and participate in a short walk in the area. Kelly Gardner, Rochester Prep Elementary School Principal, spoke to News 8 about the impact of students walking in the neighborhood with a message to share. LGBTQ visibility sparks debate at Waterloo School Board Meeting 'As an elementary school, we realize that we are a pillar in this community, so we wanted our students to be able to have their voices heard as well.' Rochester Prep acknowledged the walk as an event that supports not just the community, but students as well. The walk included a 'sensory tunnel' at the beginning, which school officials said brings attention to how individuals with autism may be more or less sensitive to sensory experiences with light, sound, movement, or touch. 'We have a lot of diverse learners at our school, and we have for many years.' Gardener said, 'We have a lot of different learners who have different needs, so, we like to bring awareness to our students even as early as kindergarten so that they understand why students are having maybe different accommodations in the community or learning differently, and to understand that everybody is an important part of our community.' Generation ROC: Rochester Prep senior earns the competitive QuestBridge scholarship
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester Prep senior Alexa Pedraza took her college entrance goals and crushed them with ease—earning a full four-year scholarship from the QuestBridge National College Match program. 'I try to do my best in whatever I do. If I try my best, then there was nothing else that I could possibly do so if I reach that goal, then I'm good,' she explains to News 8's Mikhaela Singleton. According to QuestBridge, more than 25,000 students applied this year for the scholarship that covers 100% of college costs for high-achieving high schoolers from low-income backgrounds. Only about one percent of applicants were chosen—including Alexa. 'I was really excited. I was very grateful, but I was so nervous on the day of and then I was just relieved when I got accepted,' Alexa describes. 'I cried, I screamed, just very proud,' says her mom, Sylvana DeWolf. Alexa had to display her academic achievements, extra curriculars, and determination to pursue her success through college—with plans to attend Wellesley to study neuroscience. Sylvana says they were initially stressed about college talks, but Alexa's hard work to earn this outstanding opportunity is a sigh of relief. 'There's a lot of kids that are like my daughter and us. We don't have the means or the funds to be able to afford these great colleges, but then you have the scholarship programs that are definitely just amazing and helpful for my daughter, especially,' she says. 'It means a lot to me. It also means that not only me, but my sisters can also go to college and have equal opportunities without any struggles,' adds Alexa. Rochester Prep celebrating Alexa as a shining example of how hard work can lift you up from any place in life. 'Take your time. It's going to happen. You will end up where you need to go,' Alexa says when asked about advice for her underclassmen. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Friday marked this year's Pi Day – as in 3.14159. Students at Rochester Prep got the chance to pie their teachers in the face with shaving cream pie. All they had to do was see who could accurately recite the most digits of the mathematical constant Pi. One student now holds the record with reciting 105 digits. 'Even though sometimes going up and doing something can be like nerve racking, it's O.K. to just be brace and be able to do that because who knows you might end up getting the school record like I did,' the student said. Pi Day is celebrated every year on March 14, and this is just one of the ways Rochester Prep makes math fun. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
