Man charged in deadly shooting of Lancaster County business owner
A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a business owner in Lancaster County Wednesday evening. Just before 6 p.m., deputies responded to a home on Memorial Park Road, which was owned by relatives of Roger Ledell Baskins. Weeks prior to this incident, Baskins got into an argument with his family members. During that argument, Baskins pulled out a pistol and threatened one family member before firing several shots into another family member's car in the yard. According to deputies, Baskins then used a car battery to smash windows out of the car he shot, as well as another car that belonged to a third family member. However, no one was injured during this incident. Baskins left the scene on foot and was eventually spotted by family members in a yard on Willow Lake Road. He was then taken into custody. An inquiry into the vehicle revealed it belonged to a 65-year-old Charles Wilburn Presler from Rock Hill. At the request of local officers, Rock Hill Police Department went to the Presler address and spoke with his wife. She said she hadn't been able to get in contact with him via phone. She also said Presler operated a business on Memorial Park Road, which was a short distance from the home where the family disturbance occurred. Deputies then searched that business and found Presler deceased from a gunshot wound. He also appeared to have been robbed. When Baskins was arrested, deputies said they found a pistol in the 4Runner. An initial investigation indicates Baskins arrived at Presler's business a little over an hour after the domestic disturbance. 'We might never know what set Baskins off, but for about an hour and a half he was on a violent rampage in our community,' said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the murder victim's family and friends. I'm thankful Baskins' family members alerted police to his location, and I appreciate the quick action taken by the Lancaster Police Department officers who chased Baskins down and took him into custody. Our community was not safe as long as Baskins was on the run.' In connection with the homicide, Baskins has been charged with murder, armed robbery, secon- degree burglary, grand larceny of more than $2,000 but less than $10,000, three counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person convicted of certain crimes. Former police officer convicted of possession of child sex abuse material
A federal jury convicted a former Rock Hill police officer for the possession of child sex abuse material. In December 2023, investigators with the York County Sheriff's Office received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that three videos depicting the sexual abuse of children were flagged on the social messaging app Kik, under the username 'orgasmd0nor.' Investigators eventually traced the account and IP address to 36-year-old Daniel Paul Shealy, a detective and former school resource officer with the Rock Hill Police Department. Shealy was then charged with distributing and receiving child sex abuse materials. PERVIOUS COVERAGE: Former police officer accused of having child sex abuse material faces federal charges Further investigation revealed that Shealy was a member of more than 40 private groups on Kik designed for users to trade child sexual abuse material, including groups with references to minors, teens, and incest in the titles. According to testimony from a Kik representative, users in such groups often exchange images and videos of rape, sexual assault, bestiality, and other abuse of children. Investigators testified during the trial that after receiving the tip, they executed a search warrant on Shealy's phone and his Kik account. Shealy's phone was in his patrol car and accessible through his thumbprint and a passcode, which was his badge number. Agents said they recovered 126 explicit videos of children from Shealy's phone and Kik account, which Shealy had received or distributed to others on the internet. The files included recordings of prepubescent minors in bondage and constraints, and child sex abuse materials represented the majority of the explicit content recovered from his Kik account. When Shealy testified at trial, he admitted that he operated the orgasmd0nor account and that he accessed child sex abuse material on the platform. He also admitted that he never reported any of the videos to Kik or to law enforcement because he either did not know how to report or was concerned about his privacy related to his intimate life. Shealy was taken into custody at the conclusion of the trial. 'The facts alone in this case were disturbing, but became even more appalling because the defendant was a police officer, an individual given immense public trust,' said U.S. Attorney Bryan Stirling for the District of South Carolina. 'We remain committed to holding those who betray public trust accountable and protecting our most vulnerable citizens, our children. We're grateful to the FBI and York County Sheriff's Office for their work on this case and our trial attorneys who worked diligently to bring this man to justice.' Shealy faces a mandatory minimum of five years in federal prison and a maximum of 20 years. He also faces a fine of up to $250,000, restitution, lifetime supervision to follow the term of imprisonment, and sex offender registry requirements. Parents charged after teen suspect caught in deadly shooting
A spring break game turned deadly this week in Rock Hill, and now the parents of the teen murder suspect are also facing criminal charges. Channel 9 previously reported that 17-year-old Carnell Mike is facing a murder charge for a deadly shooting at a QuikTrip. Now, police tell Channel 9's Tina Terry that his parents didn't cooperate with the investigation when their son was wanted. Police say Mike killed 16-year-old Jayden Reid Tuesday night and then ran away from the scene. Chester County deputies helped track him down. Investigators told Channel 9 that while Mike was wanted, his parents knew what was going on and didn't cooperate with the officers who were trying to find him. They've since been arrested and charged with misprision of a felony. On Thursday, police told Terry a popular water gun game may have led to the violence. 'When youth come together and they use these guns that shoot water pellets or rubber bullets or something to that effect, there is some indication that that might have led to it,' said Lt. Michael Chavis with the Rock Hill Police Department. Chavis says a group of teens may have been playing the game in a public place in Rock Hill before heading to the QuikTrip. 'When it went to the QT, the conflict continued there and became physical, and that led to the gunshot being fired,' Chavis told Terry. Now, police are warning teens on spring break to be smart. 'We cannot continue to try and solve our conflicts and issues with violence, because all that does is cause issues like this,' Chavis said. Mike is 17, but police say he's being charged as an adult. His parents are still in jail, and each of them has a $100,000 bond. (VIDEO: Community rallies around girl after accidental shooting)
