ALL ABOARD: Amtrak returns to Mobile after 20 years
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A homecoming 20 years in the making, as city and state leaders gathered in downtown Mobile Saturday to welcome Amtrak's special arrival.
Amtrak's Mardi Gras Service, the first passenger train to return to the Port City in more than two decades, made its first run from New Orleans to Mobile.
This historic launch was recognized the true Mardi Gras way — with music, bands, and plenty of celebration.
'It was a big celebration the entire way here,' Amtrak President Rodger Harris said.
'A couple of years ago, we were concerned that, you know, maybe we didn't have enough planned for these festivities, but it's been thousands and thousands of people everywhere we stopped,' Harris said regarding the big community turnout for Amtrak.
'First of all, they were really happy that the trains are back,' he said. 'But secondly, they're using this as an opportunity to celebrate in the community.'
After the festivities in Mobile, News 5 got the chance to ride along on the return trip to New Orleans.
All future riders will have the choice between Coach and Business class seats, with beautiful views of the Gulf Coast throughout the journey.
The train makes four stops in Mississippi, with a full trip taking about three and a half to four hours.
Tickets start at $15 each way for adults.
Alabama Congressman Shomari Figures said he hopes to see the service continue to grow across the Gulf Coast.
'We want to first and foremost, make sure that this line is as successful as it can possibly be,' Figures said. 'Making sure we're supporting it as a community, making sure that we're doing what we can and support it federally.'
'Making sure that the cities, not just in Mobile, but every city that's impacted by this between here in New Orleans are doing their part,' Figures continued.
Amtrak's Mardi Gras Service officially begins commercial service for all passengers on Monday, Aug. 18.
