California homeowner savagely beaten by homeless man as he worked in his garden
A Los Angeles gardener was brutally attacked by a homeless man on Monday, after the man complained about noise from the gardener's tools. Rodolfo Roman was working at a yard in Brentwood on June 23 when the shirtless perpetrator who'd been staying in an abandoned home nearby came up behind him. In video footage of the incident caught on a Ring camera, the suspect was seen yelling at Roman and cursing him out while holding a large stick, which he later used to strike the gardener. He was heard screaming: 'I hear you every morning.' The worker told the man to leave the property again and again, but the assailant refused. Instead, he violently beat Roman, inflicting injuries to his arm, head, and face, and completely covering him in blood. He fell to the ground and the attacker continued to brutalize him as he tried to protect his face from the blows. He told local outlets: 'I was very scared. My legs were shaking and I'm down on the ground.' The attack resulted in a visit to the nearby hospital, a broken arm, and several staples to close the gash on Roman's head. The injuries left him unsure of when he'll be able to get back to work. Locals were angry and frustrated by the altercation, especially because many of them feared the rising homeless population in the neighborhood would lead to an incident like this one. 'This is my worst nightmare,' said Braden Yuill, who's yard Roman was working on when he was attacked. 'He's extremely upset. He comes every week and he's just the most beautiful guy in the world and he was just covered in blood.' The property where the attacker squats was abandoned ten years ago after a house fire. Since then squatters have come in and out, some more disruptive than others. But, criminal activity at the abandoned property has increased in recent months. Neighbors said they'd called law enforcement on several occasions about the homeless people and squatters in the neighborhood to no avail. 'The police have been called multiple times,' Yuill said. 'There was a fire there last week that the fire department had to come and put out. We've spoken to that landowner multiple times.' 'I've got two young kids and I'm scared for the neighborhood,' Yuill said. 'This guy's violent, he's mentally ill and he needs to be taken off the streets.' The suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday night, his identification has not been released. Yuill put together a GoFundMe to help cover Roman's medical expenses and necessities while he is unable to work. He wrote: 'Our wonderful gardener Rodolfo was violently assaulted by a homeless man that has been living at the abandoned house a few doors up from us. 'We have tried tirelessly to have the owners demolish the structure to prevent this guy from living there, we have called 911/311, and today it finally erupted with him assaulting Rodolfo with a long pole. 'This is obviously scary for the state of LA but also for Rodolfo and his family which is all we care about at this stage. My family and I are taking care of him but it means a lot that the community have reached out to support him and his family also.'

Video shows moment gardener gets attacked while working outside of West Los Angeles home
Security video outside of a West Los Angeles home shows the disturbing moments a gardener was attacked while working outside of a home on Monday morning. Rodolfo Roman says that he was trimming some hedges along an alleyway in Brentwood when he was suddenly attacked from behind and hit over the head with an unknown object. He received eight staples to his head upon hospitalization and his arm was broken in the incident. Now, he's afraid to return to the area when he can get back to working. "I'm a little scared go to the alley," Roman said. Neighbors say it's just the latest troubling event to happen over the last year after a squatter took up residence inside of an abandoned home in the area. Sean Heffron took video from inside of the property recently, after he says he jumped the fence to put out a fire that was burning. He's one of many neighbors who have made repeated calls to both Los Angeles police and the city's Department of Building and Safety. "We've been documenting this, sending reports to LAPD, calling 911," Heffron said. "I've filed the report with DBS — I've filed two. They know. Nothing has happened." Police say they've had radio calls to the location five times since the start of March for trespassing suspects. In each instance, officers walk the people off the property, telling them not to return. Neighbors say that the property has been abandoned for the better part of a decade, and they've pleaded with the owner to do something about the issues that come with it. CBS News Los Angeles has reached out to the property owner for contact but has not yet heard back.
