John Slattery Reveals If He'd Ever Do a 'Mad Men' Reboot (Exclusive)
John Slattery Reveals If He'd Ever Do a 'Mad Men' Reboot (Exclusive) originally appeared on Parade.
In 2007, John Slattery had been working steadily in TV for nearly 20 years, most memorably on guest star turns in Will & Grace, Judging Amy and Sex and the City. But the veteran actor's career was transformed in that year when Mad Men arrived on the scene. The hit AMC series became an instant success, with Slattery as a part of the heralded ensemble.
Slattery's role as sardonic agency owner Roger Sterling earned him four Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. And it's his seven seasons on the nostalgic drama that have arguably led him to a lead role in The Rainmaker. Moving from the boardroom to the courtroom, Slattery plays Leo F. Drummond, the antagonistic prosecutor squaring off against upstart lawyer Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan) in the TV adaptation of the hit John Grisham novel.

Mad Men has been on the brain for many TV fans, considering the Emmy-winning series recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its series finale. Parade got the opportunity to speak with Slattery alongside Callaghan in promotion for The Rainmaker, which premieres this Friday, Aug. 15, on USA, and asked the actor about his thoughts on the landmark celebration.
"I mean, we just did a little event, Jon Hamm and I," he says. "And it was an incredible experience that we all knew was special from early on, which I feel grateful for. Rather than getting to the end of it and going, 'Boy, I wish I [had] enjoyed that more, or paid more attention to how good this all was.' But the writing was so good, and we all understood that. The bar was set high, and you were expected to come to work and be and you wanted to be as good as that writing. So, I mean, the whole thing was an incredible experience."

Television in this day and age is filled with a slew of reboots, revivals and sequel series of shows from the '80s, '90s and 2000s. So it's only natural for Mad Men fans to speculate about more adventures for Don Draper and company, especially considering the show has now been off the air for over a decade. But, should it ever happen, there's at least one actor who won't be suiting up for it.
"People ask, 'Dude, don't you wish you could repeat that?'" Slattery says. "I have no interest or desire to try to repeat it, because we had that. That's what's so great about working on something like this. There's no obligation to be anything like that. It's just another story. And the variety of this business is, is what drew me to it in the first place."
For what it's worth, even if the actor wanted to appear in a possible Mad Men sequel series, he doesn't think the hedonistic Roger Sterling would have lived to see much of the '70s and '80s.
"Roger Sterling is dead and gone," he muses. "He didn't live much past the end of that show, I don't think."
