Jaipur: A local BJP functionary and businessman in Anupgarh came under threat after receiving a voice message on WhatsApp, allegedly from gangster Rohit Godara. The message, which followed an unanswered call Thursday, included a demand for extortion and issued a threat. An FIR in this regard was lodged Friday. According to sources, the Anupgarh-based BJP functionary, whose identity has been withheld, received a call from an unknown number around 8pm on Wednesday. When he did not answer, a WhatsApp voice message followed in which the caller identified himself as Rohit Godara and demanded Rs 5 crore while issuing threats. The next morning, he received another call from a foreign number. The leader informed the local police station, following which police provided him with security. Police teams were dispatched to the area and began reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations. Recordings at hotels and roadside eateries were also checked, though no suspects have been identified so far. There was a series of threat calls in areas bordering Punjab, including Sriganganagar district, made by organised criminals or members of organised gangs, including one targeting another BJP functionary, Ashok Chandak. Earlier, a local real estate businessman was fired upon. Ashok Chandak, a businessman and BJP leader from Sriganganagar, received death threats allegedly from Rohit Godara after his business partner Ashish Gupta was shot at on June 17. Gupta survived the attack and is now under police protection. Chandak told the police that he and his son began receiving threats on June 20.

HC directs Haryana, Punjab to frame procedures to combat gangsters and ensure citizen protection

Chandigarh: Taking serious note of the petition filed by a resident of Haryana seeking protection from gangsters while alleging inaction by Haryana police, the Punjab and Haryana high court directed Haryana and Punjab as well as UT Chandigarh to form standard operating procedures (SOPs) to deal with gangsters. While adjourning the petition moved by Rajveer Singh, Justice Harpreet Singh Brar, whose bench handed out the order, also gave eight points to be incorporated in the SOPs to be prepared by the state. The court also appointed advocate Preetinder Singh Ahluwalia as the amicus curiae of the court for this case. Among the points to be incorporated in the SOPs mentioned by the bench was the creation of dedicated anti-gang units , with adequate training and technological support. The court directed the inclusion of surveillance of known gangsters by taking aid of digital forensic science and monitoring their finances, in tandem with financial institutions. Besides, the court said that since these gangs operate across borders, mechanisms must be put in place to share intelligence between the states of Punjab and Haryana, as well as the central agencies, to assist in crime detection. Establishing an environment of trust is necessary to create a network of informants as well as encourage citizens to report incidents. The court also asked the state to set up fast-track courts, and state counsel are also directed to apprise this court of the pre-existing legal frameworks to deal with the issue in question. Notably, Rajveer approached the high court after the Haryana police failed to extend any help to him, especially in the wake of threatening and extortion calls received by him from Rohit Godara, an aide of now-jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Godara threatened to eliminate him as well as his family in case he did not pay an extortion of Rs 1 crore. All this happened in Jan last year, and since then, Rajveer is alleged to have been making futile efforts to seek police action as well as protection. "On that note, since Jan 1, 2024, the petitioner and his family have been living under constant concern for their life owing to the constant threats made by Rohit Godara, a known gangster. He has threatened to kill the children of the petitioner as well as the rest of his family. It is hard to imagine the petitioner getting a good night's sleep in the last year, owing to the immense psychological burden he has been put under. For over a year now, the petitioner has been running from pillar to post to have an FIR registered against the culprits, however, to no avail," the court observed. MSID:: 120622178 413 |
