Diego Simeone lays out Atlético Madrid's targets for next season
Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has this weekend provided an insight into the goals of he and the club for the 2025/26 campaign. This, of course, comes fresh off another largely underwhelming season for Atléti last time out. Advertisement The Rojiblancos showcased excellence in patches, culminating in what at one point looked like a concerted La Liga title challenge. But in the end, the capital outfit fell away when it mattered most, giving rise to another 3rd-placed finish, as well as an exit from the Champions League in the Round-of-16. And fully aware that as much simply won't cut it when it comes to the expectations of the Atlético faithful is headmaster Diego Simeone. Speaking during an interview with SIMPLEMENTE FÚTBOL, as cited by Fabrizio Romano, this weekend, the Argentine tactician was drawn on his side's ambitions for next season and beyond. Advertisement And Simeone was not shy in confirming: 'There's a clear intention to be title contenders again. That's why I'm here. That's why I'm staying. I want more at this club.' Real Madrid edge out Atletico 2-1 in first leg of Champions League last 16
A superb goal from Brahim Diaz helped Real Madrid maintain its dominance of the Madrid derby on Europe's biggest stage with a 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Atletico in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie. Real Madrid had taken an early lead in the fourth minute at the Bernabeu Stadium through Rodrygo, but Julian Alvarez levelled for Atletico with a stunning shot in the 32nd. But although Diego Simeone's Atletico, who lost in the 2014 and 2016 finals against their bitter rivals, kept stars Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe quiet, they still came up short. The Rojiblancos played it safe in the final stages, seeming to accept their one-goal disadvantage for the second leg derby clash at home next week. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for Morocco international Diaz in midfield to replace the suspended Jude Bellingham and selected Fede Valverde at right-back after he was passed fit to play. The Italian had demanded his side show a better attitude and more commitment than during their La Liga defeat by Real Betis on Saturday and his charges delivered. Rodrygo pounced after just four minutes, slipping inside Javi Galan to collect Valverde's teasing pass before firing home with his left foot across Jan Oblak and inside the far post. It was the Brazilian winger's fifth strike of the tournament, habitually shining on the European stage for Madrid, where he boasts 25 goals in 61 appearances. Rodrygo wanted a penalty when Galan appeared to hold him back in the area but his appeals were waved away. His compatriot Vinicius came close to netting Madrid's second as he surged into the box but Jose Gimenez blocked his shot well. Atletico began to create danger of their own and Valverde hacked away Giuliano Simeone's whipped ball from under his own crossbar under pressure from Samuel Lino. Alvarez levelled with a brilliant individual goal, dancing away from Eduardo Camavinga on the left of the box and curling his shot past Thibaut Courtois into the top corner. The former Manchester City striker has been in sublime form in the past few weeks, notching 10 goals in 14 matches and proving why Atletico made him their second most expensive signing of all-time last summer. Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo De Paul helped Atletico keep control for long periods, with Madrid finding it hard to take the ball back from their rivals. That made it all the more surprising when Diaz restored Los Blancos' lead in the 55th minute. The midfielder left Gimenez on the floor with some quick footwork and carved out the space for a tidy low finish, before leaping into the crowd to celebrate. Griezmann fired wide and Gimenez over as Atletico looked for a response and Ancelotti brought on 39-year-old midfielder Luka Modric in search of more control. The Croatian delivered just that and neither side threatened in the final half hour of the match until stoppage time, when Madrid might have secured a third. Mbappe's cut-back from the right was behind Vinicius who was waiting for a tap-in, and Oblak saved from Modric in the aftermath. Atletico host Real Madrid next week at the Metropolitano stadium, with the winner surely facing Arsenal, who thrashed PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Netherlands in their quarterfinal first leg. Elsewhere, Aston Villa won 3-1 at Club Brugge, and Borussia Dortmund drew 1-1 at home to Lille.

Barca post narrow win to reclaim Liga lead
FC Barcelona's Ferran Torres celebrates scoring their second goal with Dani Olmo during their La Liga match with Las Palmas at Estadio Gran Canaria, Las Palmas on February 22. PHOTO: REUTERS Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres struck to earn Barcelona a 2-0 win at Las Palmas on Saturday which took them back top of La Liga. After Atletico Madrid beat Valencia to temporarily take pole position, the Catalans replaced them with a narrow victory on the road and sit one point ahead of the Rojiblancos. Substitute Olmo produced a fine finish before Torres drilled home to settle the game and earn Barca revenge for a shock home defeat by Las Palmas earlier in the season. Champions Real Madrid, third, can pull level on points with Barcelona if they beat Girona at home on Saturday. "We don't feel pressure, we want to be at the top, we know (winning the league) is up to us," Olmo told Movistar. "Today we took three important points, so we're going home happy." Olmo has not featured a great deal since the club's financial problems forced him to be unregistered at the start of the year, until Spain's national sports council granted a temporary measure which allowed him to play again. The former RB Leipzig star missed some games with a calf strain in January. "I am in shape, I'm 100 percent, with a lot of desire to play and get back in the team," he added. "I'm glad to be able to play, helping the team with goals. "In the end I want to score as many as I can to help the team and keep winning, which is the important thing." Barca were inaccurate in attack in a tight first half, unable to find the quality they needed to unpick the hosts' defence. Flick took action at the break and brought on playmaker Dani Olmo in place of the quiet Fermin Lopez. The Spain international's first contribution was a sloppy pass that flew out of play but he quickly found his focus. Lamine Yamal skipped forward and slipped the ball to Olmo, who showed good footwork to find space in the box and finish. Las Palmas pushed forward in search of an equaliser and former Barca striker Sandro Ramirez lashed an effort narrowly wide of Wojciech Szczesny's post. At the other end Yamal burst into life, increasingly threatening, and crossed for the league's top scorer Robert Lewandowski, who directed his header straight at Jasper Cillessen. Lewandowski fired over after good work by Alejandro Balde as the Polish veteran began to enjoy the extra space left at the back by the hosts. Las Palmas appealed for a penalty when a shot struck the back of Eric Garcia's arm in the box but VAR showed there was an offside in the build-up. Eight minutes of stoppage time were added on which gave Las Palmas heart but instead it was Barcelona who struck. A loose pass at the back was picked up by Raphinha, who fed Torres to rifle past Cillessen and seal Barcelona's win. "I don't think we had a very good match, we missed five or ten percent (from our best level)" admitted Barca coach Flick. "It was not as serious as we normally want to play." Defeat leaves Las Palmas 17th, level on points with Valencia, 18th, in the relegation zone. Athletic Bilbao maintain top four pace Athletic Bilbao hammered bottom side Real Valladolid 7-1 on Sunday in La Liga to stay on track for Champions League football next season. Ernesto Valverde's side, fourth, were rampant at the San Mames with Spain star Nico Williams scoring twice in the win which took them four points clear of Villarreal in fifth.
