DU panel's decision to drop proposed PG papers on Islam, Pakistan, China sparks row

A Delhi University panel's decision to drop proposed postgraduate Political Science papers on Islam, Pakistan, and China has failed to find consensus among the members. While some called it ideological censorship, those who supported the decision termed it a step towards making the syllabus 'India-centric' and free from bias. In its meeting on Wednesday, DU's Standing Committee for Academic Matters directed the removal of four elective papers — Islam and International Relations, Pakistan and the World, China's Role in the Contemporary World, and State and Society in Pakistan. A fifth paper, Religious Nationalism and Political Violence, will be reviewed in the next meeting on July 1. Opposing the decision, committee member Professor Monami Sinha said such changes undermine critical thinking and reflect a push to dilute controversial but academically relevant content. 'We argued that it is imperative to study Pakistan and China in detail. Ignoring these geopolitical realities would be academically short-sighted,' she said in a statement. She also flagged the removal of references to caste, communal violence, and same-sex relationships in revised syllabi for Sociology and Geography. However, Professor Harendra Tiwari, also a member of the committee, supported the changes, calling the syllabus 'agenda-driven' and lacking in balance. 'Why only a paper on Islam and International Relations? Why not on Hinduism or Sikhism? We want a syllabus that serves students and our nation,' he told PTI. He added that the dropped papers will not be reinstated unless the revised syllabus aligns with an 'India-first' perspective. The next committee meeting on July 1 is expected to see further debate on the syllabus.

Creation of Pakistan: Minister highlights role of religious minorities

LAHORE: A thought-provoking and historic seminar titled 'The Role of Minorities in the Creation and Continuity of Pakistan' was held at Alhamra Art Council, Lahore, as part of the Jashn-e-Urdu celebrations. The event was graced by Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs, Ramesh Singh Arora, as the chief guest. The seminar aimed to highlight the significant historical and contemporary contributions of religious minorities to the unity, development, and progress of Pakistan. In his address, Ramesh Singh Arora remarked that religious minorities in Pakistan are like vibrant colors in the bouquet of our nation, completing its beauty and harmony. According to the vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, we are all equal citizens. The Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is transforming this vision into reality through inclusive and historic reforms. He paid tribute to the sacrifices made by minorities during the Pakistan Movement and acknowledged the contributions of individuals from minority communities in fostering education, political engagement, social harmony, and national progress. Ramen Arora also elaborated on several key initiatives currently being undertaken by the Punjab government for minority communities, including: Construction, renovation, and expansion of religious sites belonging to minority groups, Educational scholarships for deserving minority students, Legislative reforms for the protection of minority rights and Cultural and training programs to promote interfaith harmony. Mufti Ashiq Hussain emphasized the importance of interfaith unity and stated that Islam teaches respect for all communities. The development of Pakistan is only possible when we embrace diversity with open hearts. Macdonald Chandi, a well-known Christian community leader, appreciated the provincial government's outreach: Dr Majeed Able, added that the role of minorities in the Pakistan Movement has been understated in our textbooks. It's time to give rightful space to these heroes of history. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Simran Clarifies "Dabba Role" Comment: "It Reached The Person Correctly"

New Delhi: Tamil actor Simran's winning speech at an award function hit the headlines as Simran referred to a certain "Dabba Role". Soon after her speech went viral, the Internet assumed that the comment was meant for Jyotika, who recently acted in the Netflix series Dabba Cartel. Simran, now, has clarified that her comment reached the person it was meant for. She said, "Dabba Cartel is a nice web series, people are just breaking down with their speculation. It reached the person correctly whom I mentioned. That person messaged me that she is sorry and didn't mean to hurt me." Simran won an award for her negative role in Andhagan. She recalled an incident when a fellow actress mocked her for playing "aunty roles" during her acceptance speech. The fellow actress, actually, sent Simran a text to applaud her performance but she jokingly said, "At least I'm not doing aunty roles." Without revealing the name of the actress, Jyotika said, "But I feel it's better to do aunty roles and main aunty roles - mother of 25 years. I have done it in Kannathil Muthamittal also, than playing dabba roles and doing nothing. That's what I feel. We should feel confident about what we all want to do." After the speech went viral, the Internet assumed that her comment was either for Jyotika or Laila, as the former actress had recently appeared in the Netflix show, Dabba Cartel. On the work front, Simran is riding high on the success of her latest release, Tourist Family.
