Milwaukee man unsatisfied with service shoots mechanic, complaint says
Two Milwaukee men have been charged in connection to the shooting of an auto shop owner following an argument about service.
Elisha L. Payne, 27, was criminally charged Aug. 8 with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and Roman D. Booker, 36, was charged with harboring or aiding a felon.
The shooting took place Aug. 1 at Divine Auto Shop, 5620 W. Center St. The victim, the 56-year-old shop owner, survived the shooting but was seriously injured. A call from the Journal Sentinel to the shop on Aug. 8 went answered.
According to a criminal complaint:
Payne dropped off a 2015 Kia Soul to get the steering column replaced for work totaling $650. A witness at the shop told police the owner didn't have the right part, so the work hadn't been completed when Payne, Booker and a third male arrived at the shop in the afternoon looking for the vehicle.
The owner's son said the three men began arguing with the owner and the men then formed a circle around the owner before Payne pulled out a gun and began shooting. A total of seven casings were recovered as well as two brass bullet fragments. The incident was also captured on surveillance footage.
Booker told police the three men are related to each other and while leaving the scene, Payne said "he (didn't) mean to do it and he was sorry," the complaint said.
If convicted of the Class B felony, Payne may be sentenced up to 60 years in prison. Booker faces up to 10 years for a Class G felony. Payne is in custody of Milwaukee County Jail on $100,000 bail. He makes an initial appearance in court on Aug. 9.
