UCLA falls to LSU in men's CWS game delayed by storms, preps for elimination game

OMAHA, Neb. — UCLA waited 15 hours to bat in the fourth inning of its winner's bracket game of the Men's College World Series against LSU. Now, the Bruins have five hours to regroup or else their season is over. An early lead disappeared once LSU came to bat in the first inning. Those bats stayed hot through a strong thunderstorm that delayed the fourth inning until Tuesday's morning, lifting the Tigers to a 9-5 win at Charles Schwab Field. UCLA will play Arkansas in elimination game at 4 p.m. PDT Tuesday afternoon. The game will air on ESPN. Monday night started promising for the Bruins. RBIs from Roman Martin, AJ Salgado and Payton Brennan gave them a three-run lead in the first. For the 29th time this season, UCLA scored first. They were 27-1 in such scenarios before the loss to LSU. The Tigers answered with three straight singles and a 368-foot bomb from Jared Jones to claim a 4-3 lead in the first. The Tigers added another run in the third before the overnight weather delay. That didn't dampen the LSU bats, which responded with two runs when play resumed Tuesday morning. The Bruins rallied in the eighth inning with RBIs from Brennan and Blake Balsz before Phoenix Call, the potential go-ahead run, grounded out with the bases loaded. The Tigers plated an insurance run in response.

Bruins CWS Matchup vs LSU Suspended Due to Rain

The College World Series winner's bracket matchup between the UCLA Bruins and LSU Tigers was suspended due to inclement whether in and moved to Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. PT. The Bruins were down 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning and up to bat before heavy rain halted play for the rest of the night. The NCAA at 8:15 p.m. PT on Monday deemed the game suspended and moved it to finish on Tuesday. The Bruins opened the game hot, scoring three runs off a Roman Martin RBI double, AJ Salgado RBI single and a Payton Brennan groundout that brought Martin home. UCLA entered the matchup 6-0 in the most season as a result of early offense in every matchup. Their quick offense was flanked by quality early innings on the mound and a bullpen that has been among the best in college baseball for the better part of the second half of the season. The No. 6 seeded Tigers, however, answered back immediately, scoring four runs off sophomore right hander Landon Stump off a Jake Brown RBI single that was immediately followed by a three-run home run off the bat of first baseman Jaren Jones. Stump followed up his four-run first inning by retiring the side, finishing his night with rive runs, five hits and two walks in 2.0 innings. Chris Grothues took the mound with two runners on in the third inning. He allowed a hit which scored one of Stumps runner but struck out three batters and closed the inning. Over the next two innings after opening the ball game with three in the first, Bruins batters weren't able to get to Anthony Eyenson, getting on base off a walk and getting as far as second base on a sacrifice bunt. Luckily for the Bruins, there was a lot of game left to play before the ballgame was rained out. Suspensions, especially in a game of this magnitude, could alter the latter half of the matchup. So much so that a bullpen arm that may not have been available on Monday could be made available on Tuesday, for instance. UCLA has 12 hours to digest the first three innings of its winner's game for a chance to come back down by two and advance to the next round to be one win away from another national championship appearance. UCLA gets off to fast start, holds off upstart Murray State 6-4 in College World Series opener

OMAHA, Neb. -- Roman Martin and AJ Salgado drove in two runs apiece to lead UCLA to a 6-4 victory over a Murray State team making its College World Series debut Saturday. The Bruins, in the CWS for the first time since they won the championship in 2013, built a 6-0 lead before the Racers began chipping away at it in the middle innings. UCLA closer Easton Hawk pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the Bruins' fourth straight win in an Omaha opener. UCLA (48-16) will play Monday night against the winner of Saturday night's game between No. 3 national seed Arkansas and No. 6 LSU. The Missouri Valley Conference's Racers (44-16), only the fourth No. 4 regional seed since 1999 to advance to the CWS, will try to keep their first appearance going when they play Arkansas or LSU in an elimination game on Monday. Ian May (8-3), the second of five relievers who followed starter Michael Barnett, pitched an inning to earn the win. The Bruins were in full control early and improved to 27-1 when scoring first. They loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning against Nic Schutte (8-5). He gave up a hit and issued three walks before he settled down and got back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to keep it 1-0. Dean West singled in another run in the second, and the Bruins added four more in the fourth on a safety squeeze bunt, base hit and Salgado's two-run double. Murray State ended the UCLA pitching staff's streak of 20 2/3 scoreless innings when a sliding Jonathan Hogart beat Salgado's throw to the plate on Carson Garner's drive into right field in the fifth. Before that, the Bruins hadn't allowed a run since the second inning of their super regional opener against UTSA. The Racers added a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth after putting runners on second and third with no outs. Consecutive RBI groundouts pulled them within 6-4. Hawk went to the mound in the ninth with a two-run lead and facing the heart of the Racers' order. He struck out Dustin Mercer, got Garner to ground out and fanned Dominic Decker to earn his eighth save.
