Pope Leo XIV will celebrate a Mass for the Care of Creation on July 9
The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments present at the Holy See Press Office, a new formulary of the Roman Missal dedicated to the 'Care for Creation'. Jul 04, 2025 By Isabella H. de CarvalhoOn July 9, 2025, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate the first 'Mass for the Care of Creation', with a new formulary of the Roman Missal, produced by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and presented Thursday, July 3, during a press conference at the Vatican. The Pope will celebrate this private Mass during his holiday with the staff of the 'Borgo Laudato Sì ' ('Laudato Sì Village'), an educational center located in the Papal residence in Castel Gandolfo. With this new formulary "the Church is offering liturgical, spiritual and communal support for the care we all need to exercise of nature, our common home. Such service is indeed a great act of faith, hope and charity', Cardinal Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development said during the press conference. This Mass dedicated to taking care of creation 'calls us to be faithful stewards of what God has entrusted to us – not only in daily choices and public policies, but also in our prayer, our worship, and our way of living in the world'. A way to promote an integral ecology In the Roman Missal there are 49 different Masses and prayers for various needs and occasions. Of these, 17 are dedicated to civil needs and this new liturgical text will now become a part of this category. An official decree by the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, approved by Pope Leo XIV and dated June 8, was also released, marking the addition of the formulary to the Roman Missal. This liturgical text was developed in collaboration with several Vatican dicasteries and was strongly inspired by Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si ', which this year celebrates the 10th anniversary of its publication. The release of the formulary also falls on the year of the 35th anniversary of St. John Paul II's 1990 message for the World Day of Peace, titled 'Peace with God the Creator, Peace with all of Creation'. ''The Mass for the Care for Creation' takes up some of the main positions contained in Laudato Si' and expresses them in the form of a prayer within the theological framework that the encyclical revives', Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, explained during the press conference. The texts that make up the formulary for this Mass 'are a good antidote' against reading Laudato Si' as concerned with a 'false or superficial ecology', which is 'far removed from that 'integral ecology' amply described and promoted in the encyclical". In fact, he described Francis' encyclical as an 'eco-social' text, rather than just 'ecological'. Remembering those affected by climate change 'Creation is not an added theme but is always already present in the Catholic liturgy', as the Eucharist 'joins heaven and earth, it embraces and penetrates all creation' and in it 'we bless God for the bread and wine we receive', Cardinal Czerny said. This Mass can now 'increase our gratitude' and also 'invites us to respond with care and love' to the issues of today. Quoting Pope Leo XIV's message for this year's World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, released on July 2, the Cardinal additionally highlighted that 'in a world where the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters are the first to suffer the devastating effects of climate change, deforestation and pollution, care for creation becomes an expression of our faith and humanity'. He insisted, citing Laudato Si' , that 'the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor are one and the danger of a superficial ecology' is to believe that the only 'problems to be solved are ecological ones' and that this can be done 'at the expense of the people'. The readings and prayers featured in the Mass Archbishop Viola emphasized that the readings featured in this Mass are 'very rich and offer several insights'. From the Old Testament, for example, a reading from the Book of Wisdom (13,1-9) is included, which highlights the importance of seeing God through his creation. For the Responsorial Psalm, certain verses are listed from Psalm 18, which highlights how 'the heavens declare the glory of God', and Psalm 103, which states 'Bless the Lord, all his creatures'. For the New Testament, a reading from St. Paul's letter to the Colossians (1,15-20) was selected that affirms that Christ 'is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth'. Lastly, two passages from the Gospel of Matthew are suggested. In the first (6,24-34) Christ invites to 'look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, yet 'your heavenly Father feeds them'. The second (8,23-27) features the moment when Jesus calms a storm while on a boat with his disciples. The prayers in the Mass also reflect the importance of caring for creation, for example by stating 'while we wait for new heavens and a new earth, let us learn to live in harmony with all creatures'. Clarifications regarding "Traditionis custodes" Finally, responding to a question about the publication of some press articles related to Pope Francis's 2021 Motu Proprio , Traditionis custodes , the Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, noted that the published texts contribute to 'a very partial and incomplete reconstruction.' In fact, a consultation is cited to which, however, 'further documentation and other confidential reports — also the result of additional consultations — were subsequently added and submitted to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.'--Vatican News

Pope Leo XIV's pectoral cross contains a relic of St. Leo the Great
On the day of his election, Pope Leo XIV received the gift of a silver pectoral cross containing the relics of Pope St. Leo the Great, as well as three Augustinian bishops: St. Augustine, St. Thomas of Villanova, and Blessed Anselmo Polanco, a Spanish bishop martyred in the country's civil war. On May 8, the day of his election to the papacy, the new Pope Leo XIV received a silver pectoral cross donated by the Circolo San Pietro , containing relics of his illustrious predecessor, along with relics of St. Augustine of Hippo and Augustinian bishops St. Thomas of Villanova and Blessed Anselmo Polanco. The Circolo San Pietro was founded in Rome in 1869 by a group of young people at the urging of Blessed Pope Pius IX, who entrusted them with their initial charitable duty of providing meals for the poor. The idea of the Custode of the Apostolic Sanctuary The idea of having a new 'reliquary' cross made for Pope Leo XIV was the inspiration of Father Bruno Silvestrini, OSA, Custode del Sacrario Apostolico (Guardian of the Apostolic Sanctuary), and a member of the Augustinian community attached to the Pontifical Sacristy. Picking up on his Augustinian confrere's desire to entrust himself to the protection and guidance of Pope Leo the Great, Fr. Silvestrini turned to expert Antonino Cottone, who had already made five reliquaries using traditional medieval techniques. Mr. Cottone created the pectoral cross reliquary, which was donated to Pope Leo by the Augustinian General Curia on the day he was created Cardinal, on 30 September 2023. A painstaking task It took the expert only two hours to create, with painstaking precision and passionate dedication, a new small cross with gilded paper filigrees ( paperoles ) on red moiré ('watered silk', a textile whose appearance simulates the grain of wood or marble, producing an iridescent effect), where 4 tiny paper flowers held the relics of the 4 illustrious pastors of the Church. Mr. Cottone skillfully rolled, shaped, and glued tiny strips of paper to create a series of decorative elements between which he then inserted the precious fragments of the 'holy bones.' Cross presented to Leo XIV When he had finished his work, the artisan placed the 'reliquary cross' inside the papal pectoral cross and presented it to Pope Leo XIV by placing it around his neck. The Pope joyfully received the pectoral cross enriched with the relics of four bishops particularly dear to him.--Vatican News

Pope who acted against exclusion
For women, Pope Francis has brought revolutionary changes to the Catholic Church. This is not solely a matter concerning the Church; every woman should be aware of it, to affirm that even sacred rites can be reformed. Pope Francis will be remembered not only for his deep humility and inclusive spirituality but also for steering revolutionary reforms that challenged year-old traditions. From the moment his papacy began in 2013, the first Jesuit to hold the position brought in revolutionary changes. He was driven by his own principle, simple but profound, to be a voice for the voiceless. In a patriarchal society where women have long been relegated to the sidelines of spiritual authority, Pope Francis' remarkable changes shocked theological orthodoxy. In 2016, he rewrote history by allowing women to participate in the Maundy Thursday foot-washing ceremony. This is a sacred re-enactment of Jesus Christ cleansing the feet of his 12 apostles. Pope Francis reformed the ceremony by declaring that it would be open to women too or as he put it, 'to all the members of the people of God'. This ritual, which was traditionally reserved for men, symbolises humility, service, and compassion. By including women, he shattered a symbolic boundary that had reinforced the exclusion of women from the Church's most revered practices. This was not just a ceremonial change, a theologically loaded act, a direct challenge to the legacy that had long tied the spiritual leadership exclusive to maleness. Pope Francis, in his early celebrations of the rite, washed the feet of Muslim women, prisoners, and migrants — acts that stirred controversy among conservative factions of the Church. Yet he persisted. Later, he formalised the change by updating the Roman Missal, making women's inclusion permanent. In 2025, churches across the world officially embraced this inclusive vision, with women participating in foot-washing ceremonies globally — a powerful visual testament to the message that men and women are equals in dignity and grace. Further, the Pope's Vatican appointments including women in the most powerful positions, are not just token gestures but structural shifts. Women, for the first time in the Catholic history, have been given the chance to take up key positions. He appointed Sister Nathalie Becquart the first woman with voting rights in the Synod of Bishops, an international body of Church leaders previously reserved for Cardinals and clergy. He named Francesca Di Giovanni, a laywoman, to a senior diplomatic role in the Secretariat of State, and brought women into the Vatican's most powerful economic oversight body. The Pope condemned the exploitation of women, labelling it as a 'sin against God'. He described the gender pay gap a 'pure scandal' and advocated for equal pay for equal work. He criticised workplace discrimination against women, particularly the bias against hiring women due to potential pregnancies. Pope Francis launched a synod on synodality, one of his boldest initiatives in 2021 (a multi-year global consultation involving laypeople, clergy, and bishops), as a bold response to the growing crisis of credibility and inclusivity within the Church. Historically, the Church has operated a hierarchical, top-down structure, with limited participation from laypeople, especially women and the marginalised. The synod on synodality marked a profound shift in the history of 2,000 years that everyday Catholics including laywomen have been granted not only a voice but also a vote in shaping Church direction. Out of 364 voting members, 54 were women, both nuns and laywomen. These women had equal voting rights alongside Cardinals, Bishops and priests. This is significant in the history of the Catholic Church as it repositions the Church as a listening body open to change and reform. This was more than administrative reform. It redefined the very nature of authority in the Church. The Pope's goal was not to dismantle the faith's foundations, but to plant seeds of radical inclusion, to make the Church more aligned with the world it seeks to serve. Francis also extended his embrace to those often marginalised by tradition and custom, including the LGBTQ+ community, the poor, and the enslaved. His papacy was not about speaking to Catholics alone; it was about affirming the humanity of all. As a strong advocate of world peace, he consistently emphasised forgiveness, social justice, and interreligious dialogue as vital elements in achieving world peace. His advocacy extended to specific actions such as calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, and voicing for the rights of refugees. In doing so, Pope Francis proved that tradition need not be a cage. He suffered intense criticism from conservative theologians and media outlets. Accusations of blasphemy and betrayal followed him, yet he stood firm, not in defiance but in faith. His reforms offer a profound lesson to the world: history and tradition are not immovable objects. They can be questioned, reimagined, and reformed with vision and courage. In an age of widening inequality, rising authoritarianism, and institutional distrust, Pope Francis has given the world a rare gift — a model of leadership grounded in humility, dialogue, and inclusion. In washing the feet of women and giving them a vote, Pope Francis has done what few leaders dare: he has chosen humility over hierarchy, peace over profit, and justice over precedent.
