Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson is impressing early in OTAs.
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson is impressing early in OTAs. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While the Pittsburgh Steelers did trade for wide receiver DK Metcalf earlier this offseason, they also dealt away one of their stars in George Pickens. Advertisement As a result, the team would love someone to step up and take a bigger role. And amid even more trade gossip … there may be an emerging candidate who is already on the roster. Pittsburgh just began its OTAs, and former 2024 third-round pick Roman Wilson has reportedly been the player that has been impressing the most so far. He spoke with reporters and said that he is ready to get on the field. "My goals for the season: get better every single day," Wilson said. "Treat every day like it's game day. Come prepared to ask coaches after practice. Just be mentally, physically locked in every single day. And just give it my all. Give it all I've got every single day so I can be ready for whenever my time is." Advertisement An ankle injury sidelined Wilson all of last summer, so he did not get to properly prepare for the season. Then as soon as he was close to making his debut, a hamstring issue kept him out for the rest of the season. He finished with just under 800 yards in his senior season at Michigan, so the Steelers know he can get it done. So they will be hoping that he can stay on the field and make an impact in his sophomore season. Pittsburgh would love for that to happen, as Pickens - for all of his controversial behavior - was a very productive player for them, so they could use someone to help fill the void that he left behind. Steelers WR Roman Wilson praises QB Mason Rudolph — says he's an 'elite quarterback'
Watch out, Aaron Rodgers. In your absence, another Steelers QB is rallying the team behind him — none other than Mason Rudolph. On Day 3 of Steelers OTAs, rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson was asked for his opinion on catching passes from Rudolph — and this was his response, courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Advertisement "I love him. He's a great guy. I think he's an elite quarterback — really locked in, bought in. Everyone likes him a lot — he's a good dude." Wilson's admiration for Rudolph may toe the line between fact and fiction, but at least Rudolph is here in Pittsburgh — while the same can't be said for Rodgers. Yes, OTAs are voluntary — but it doesn't change the fact that Rodgers continues to play this never-ending waiting game — while Rudolph is earning the respect of his peers. Should Rodgers not end up signing with the Steelers, the Rudolph-to-Wilson connection is a sight fans will hopefully learn to love throughout the 2025 season. Today, it's how big of a role second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson could have in 2025 after the trade of starter George Pickens on Wednesday. Wilson missed all of his rookie season with a series of injuries, including an ankle sprain and two hamstring injuries. He was healthy by the second half of the season, but the Steelers held him back from participating after he missed almost of his potential team development time. Without Pickens, can they feel comfortable turning to Wilson at outside receiver in 2025? Alan breaks it down. #steelers #herewego #nfl CONNECT WITH STEELERS NOW: Steelers Now: SN on Twitter: SN on FB: SN on Insta: 8:17 Now Playing Paused Ad Playing

Mike Tomlin on what he expects from Steelers WR Roman Wilson in Year 2
Mike Tomlin on what he expects from Steelers WR Roman Wilson in Year 2 Roman Wilson was one of the most discussed players on the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout the 2024 regular season. An explosive receiver out of Michigan, many fans—including myself—were expecting big things from Wilson during his rookie year, especially given the Steelers' proven history of drafting great receivers outside of the first round. However, Wilson saw just five snaps throughout his 2024 rookie season—in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders—with zero targets to show for it. Why did Roman Wilson disappear in 2024? At the 2025 NFL Annual League Meeting, Steelers beat reporter Nick Farabaugh took time to question head coach Mike Tomlin on Wilson's limited usage, despite being healthy at the end of the season. Tomlin explained that health and football readiness were two completely different aspects to consider, stating that the right opportunity didn't present itself for Wilson to properly make an impact on offense. However, Tomlin quickly shifted away from the past and looked forward to the future: "We're expecting really good things for him in his second year. I think that's a reasonable expectation. I think from time-to-time guys get faced with injury and it derails their start, but by no means do we feel like it's going to define his career. Calvin Austin is an example of that. Calvin missed a significant portion of his rookie year, similar to Roman. Over the last two years he's gone on to move away from that and be a real positive contributor to our efforts. We expect similar things from Roman." It is encouraging to hear the confidence Tomlin has in Wilson's second season, but the young receiver has big shoes to fill—as he will be tasked with upholding the Steelers' newfound tradition of drafting great receivers outside of the first round, like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Diontae Johnson, and George Pickens.
