Kapkapiii Movie Review: This campy horror comedy has more chuckles than chills
Story: A group of out-of-work boys begin dabbling with an Ouija board just for kicks. At first, it's all fun and games — until strange events start to unfold. What begins as harmless mischief soon spirals into chaos, turning their lives upside down. 'Kapkapiii' is a Hindi remake of the 2023 Malayalam horror-comedy Romancham. Review: Horror comedies flow in a peculiar rhythm that's often hard to perfect. It's a fine balance that has to be maintained between making it too campy, somewhat goofy, and scary enough to make the audience feel just a tinge of fear. Kapkapiii checks these boxes mostly — but not without flaws. Manu (Shreyas Talpade) and his friends Achyut (Dinker Sharma), Nanku (Jay Thakkar), Nirup (Varun Pande) and others are a bunch of nincompoops sharing a room and doing all the aimless things out-of-work boys usually do. Things get mildly exciting when two young girls — Kavya (Siddhi Idnani) and Madhu (Sonia Rathee) — move in next door. But just when romance seems like a possibility, the story takes a sharp, spooky turn when Manu brings home an Ouija board. What begins as casual foolery soon snowballs into a series of eerie events that start to disrupt their lives. The tension gradually builds until it reaches a flashpoint — an unmistakable, unsettling presence in the house. As the plot progresses, more twists stumble out of the closet, adding layers of chaos to the group's already messed-up reality. Directed by the late Sangeeth Sivan best known for comedies like 'Kya Kool Hain Hum', 'Apna Sapna Money Money', and 'Yamla Pagla Deewana 2', leans heavily into the humour more than the horror. The comedy is crude, occasionally borderline offensive, but many of the jokes surprisingly land. The film thrives in its raw, unfiltered moments — thanks to the tapori lingo and the wild ways these boys speak to each other. There's a consistent stream of chuckles, aided by the fact that each character is quirkier than the next. Sivan and writers Saurabh Anand and Kumar Priyadarshi find fertile ground in their concept — throwing a motley bunch of lazy fellas into a haunted house scenario. It's not polished, but it's packed with energy. Unfortunately, the female characters here feel like mere props. Their presence is largely inconsequential, and their romantic tracks do little beyond stretching the runtime. Tusshar Kapoor's entry in the second half is a welcome change of pace. His character Kabir has a very bizarre yet funny trajectory. Tusshar's goofy expressions help but his character could have been fleshed out better. Shreyas Talpade is loud, as expected, but brings the right madness to Manu. Among the supporting cast, Dibyendu Bhattacharya is a total riot even in a short cameo. He has the rare ability to make an impression with minimal screen time. The screenplay, while rooted in a solid concept, feels cluttered with too many characters and too much chaos. While the humour works, the horror often fizzles. Still, the chemistry between the boys keeps things from falling apart. Music by Ajay Jayanthi blends well with the film's overall vibe, keeping it breezy and fun. Overall, 'Kapkapiii' is a harmless fun film that will tickle your funny bone but won't exactly send shivers down your spine.

Tusshar Kapoor says attempts were made to derail his career because of his film background: ‘Aap hero dikhne ke laayak nahi ho'
It's difficult for star kids to escape the ever-evolving debate around nepotism. While they enjoy certain privileges, they are also subjected to intense scrutiny, especially in today's hyper-critical environment. Actor and son of veteran star Jeetendra, Tusshar Kapoor, who made his acting debut in 2001 with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, recently reflected on how things were different back then — but not entirely free of judgment. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Tusshar acknowledged that the nepotism conversation wasn't as prevalent when he entered the industry. However, he admitted that there was a concerted effort by a section of the media to malign his image because of his film background. Recalling his early days, he said, 'Especially if you were from a film background, then the glass is always half empty for a certain section of the media. You have to be very thick-skinned. Bahut neecha giraane ki koshish, bahut negativity thi (There were efforts to pull you down, a lot of negativity).' The Golmaal actor went on to claim that attempts were made to derail his journey in the industry, but he chose to maintain a thick skin and focus on his work. Reflecting on the release of his debut film, he said, 'The film (Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai) released, and it did really well. Otherwise, I could have been crushed under this pressure. I didn't come into the industry feeling I had to live up to someone's expectations. But there was an attempt to constantly judge and derail my path.' Tusshar went on to express his gratitude to the audience for supporting him He also spoke about the pressure of public appearances that comes with being a star kid. According to Tusshar, even something as basic as showing up at a press event could spark criticism. He shared, 'If you come to a press conference naturally without makeup and hair, you are criticised that aap hero dikhne ke laayak nahi ho (you don't look like a hero). If you come with makeup and hair done, you are told you are too filmy. Everyone was trying to pull you down.' While Tusshar conceded that landing a debut film may be easier for star kids, he was quick to point out that success isn't guaranteed. 'You can get your first film much easier. But even that is a chance. To finish that film and what choices you make after that, it's all unknown. The constant scrutiny and that feeling of 'no matter what you do, the glass is half empty', that is something you have to face and move on from,' he shared. Tusshar's latest release Kapkapiii — a remake of the Malayalam film Romancham — hit theatres on Friday. The film also stars Shreyas Talpade and Siddhi Idnani.

Tusshar Kapoor is not worried about Kapkapiii being compared with Romancham: 'A huge audience has not watched it'
Tusshar Kapoor reunited with Sangeeth Sivan after two decades with Kapkapiii. The film marked the actor-director combination's first reunion since their 2004 sleeper hit, Kya Kool Hain Hum. However, Sivan could not see the film's release as he died in May 2024 after a cardiac arrest. Now, as Kapkapiii hits the screens, Tusshar speaks with HT about the bittersweet feeling of celebrating it and more. Elaborating on how it feels to not have Sangeeth during the promotions, Tusshar says, "It's a little unbelievable because we spent so many days and moments together, from workshops to the wrap party. We worked together after so long, after Kya Kool Hain Hum. He was there till the dubbing, too. Sometimes it just seems very hard to fathom. But we are living in such times where nothing surprises you anymore. One has to just accept whatever comes your way. It's a bittersweet feeling. I am sad that he isn't here, but happy about the fact that his work, his film, is releasing on time and in the manner he intended." Kapkapiii is a horror comedy that also stars Shreyas Talpade, Siddhi Idnani, Jay Thakkar, and Sonia Rathee. The film is the official remake of the 2023 Malayalam hit Romancham. When asked if he was worried that Romancham's popularity on OTT could be added pressure for Kapkapiii, Tusshar says, "That definitely is a slight concern. But, I'd like to believe that Romanchan has its own niche audience in the south. There is a huge audience base that has not watched it. For instance, I would want to watch a remake in the theatres with actors I can identify with. I'll keep that as my first option. Both languages are equal for me. But when a film releases in Hindi, I'll go and watch it regardless of whether it's a remake, and there are millions of others like me." Tusshar adds that Kapkapiii is not a shot-by-shot remake. "We have given it a new take," he adds, "Even though it is a remake of Romancham, there is a freshness. There's a new vibe and elements that have been enhanced and added. Sangeeth ji has given his own twist to it with the horror and romance. There is a lot more to it." Kapkapiii releases in theatres on May 23.

Kapkapiii movie review: Horror-comedy signals a saturation point for the genre
As I exited the theatre after watching Kapkapiii, I had two thoughts: one, the film leaves you with more questions than answers. And two, Bollywood really needs to break up with horror comedies—the situationship is reaching a saturation point. Directed by the late Sangeeth Sivan, the story revolves around a group of friends—played by Shreyas Talpade, Dinker Sharma, Dherendra Kumar Tiwari, and Sonia Rathee—who begin playing a dangerous game with an ouija board, unknowingly summoning the spirit of Anamika. Word spreads fast, and soon there's a long queue of people eager to get answers from the spirit—ranging from revelations about someone's father's real identity to solving petty domestic mysteries like stolen jewellery. But things soon spiral out of control. How the group handles the chaos that follows forms the rest of the plot. Kapkapiii, a remake of the 2023 Malayalam film Romancham, starts off as harmless fun. We've seen enough buddy comedies to know the tropes—a token drunk, a scaredy-cat—and they're all present here. The problem is that Kapkapiii thinks it's funnier than it actually is. Written by Kumar Priyadarshi and Saurabh Anand, the story gets increasingly convoluted. A tenant who fancies one of the guys is thrown in. Then comes a gangster, played by Dibyendu Bhattacharya. After the intermission, Tusshar Kapoor joins the gang, and from that point, it's hard to track where the film is even headed. We get 'chadar mod' and 'len ke bode' in the name of jokes. Eventually, you stop laughing—and even stop feeling scared. You just sit there like a zombie—expressionless. Shreyas Talpade is the anchor of this sinking ship. He's the only one who truly understands the comic timing the genre demands, but with limited material, there's only so much he can do. Tusshar Kapoor's character is confusing—you're never sure why he's even in the film. Every actor tries, which is both reassuring and a little sad. Reassuring because at least there's effort. Sad because, despite that, you're bored. The jump scares are minimal, and that's about all you get. The music by Ajay Jayanthi is a miss. In the end, Kapkapiii is a classic case of wasted potential—a film that wants to be a quirky horror-comedy but ends up being neither spooky nor funny. It leans too heavily on tired tropes, underdeveloped subplots, and a scattered screenplay.
