Sibu man who assaulted, threatened wife for bringing loan sharks home gets 6 months' jail

Photo for illustration purposes only. – Photo from SIBU (Aug 13): A man who assaulted his wife for bringing two loan sharks to their home in April was sentenced to six months in jail by the Magistrates' Court here today. Magistrate Romario Jonoi also sentenced Tino Alphonsus, 31, to another six months behind bars for threatening his wife. Tino, who pleaded guilty to both charges, was ordered to serve the jail terms concurrently from the date of his arrest on April 12. He was charged under Section 319 of the Penal Code for causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000, as well as under Section 506 for criminal intimidation, which provides for up to seven years in jail, or a fine, or both. According to the facts of the case, around 7am on April 11, the victim, who was working at a Jalan Chew Hik Hiong 1 eatery, was approached by two men looking to collect a debt from her husband. She brought the men to her rental house in Jalan Tiong Hua to meet her husband before returning to work. When she returned home around 9pm, an argument broke out as Tino became enraged because she had brought the loan sharks to their house. He slapped her on the face and head several times, leaving her with injuries. The victim claimed she had been assaulted frequently and could no longer tolerate Tino's behaviour, prompting her to lodge a police report. Police arrested him on Lorong Lai Chee at 5.35pm on April 12. Investigations revealed that Tino assaulted his wife out of anger over the loan shark visit and also slapped her twice on the face after accusing her of having an affair. She said he also threatened to kill her during the incident. Deputy public prosecutor Haris Danial Mohamed Hassan handled the prosecution, while Tino was unrepresented by legal counsel. File photo for illustration purposes SIBU (July 14): The Magistrates' Court here today sentenced an aluminium factory worker to nine months in prison for assaulting and injuring his co-worker with an iron rod. Magistrate Romario Jonoi convicted Jefferson Emprang, 43, from Nanga Salim here on his own guilty plea to a charge of voluntarily causing hurt, framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code. The Section provides for up to 10 years' imprisonment or a fine or whipping, or with any two of such punishments, upon conviction. He committed the offence at a factory premises in Lorong Alan 2 here at about 6.30amon July 7, 2025. According to the facts of the case, the 27-year-old victim was seated in the driver's seat of a lorry when he was suddenly assaulted by Jefferson, who struck him on the left cheek using an iron rod. The victim immediately exited the lorry and fled the factory compound, but was pursued by the accused who swung the rod and struck the victim on the neck. Jefferson was arrested along Jalan Saga here at about 5pm on the same day, with police also seizing the iron rod from his workplace. It was not mentioned in court as to what triggered the attack. SIBU (July 14): A 43-year-old man was fined RM10,000 in default one year's imprisonment by the Magistrates' Court here today for committing mischief by breaking his wife's car windscreens and windows. Yong Kai Seng, from Pasai Siong here, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Romario Jonoi to a charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code. The Section provides for a minimum of one year's imprisonment or a fine or both upon conviction. The accused failed to pay the fine. He committed the offence at an unnumbered house in Lorong Bahagia Selatan 4 here at around 3.44pm on July 2. Based on the facts of the case, the complainant, who is the accused's wife, received a video sent via WhatsApp by her foster sister showing the accused breaking the front and rear windscreens and windows of a car registered under the complainant's name using a hammer. He was arrested at about 11.25am on July 3 following a police report lodged by the complainant. Investigations found the accused had recorded the video himself and sent it to his wife's foster sister with the purpose of asking the complainant to meet in order to resolve their personal problems. Indonesian charged with countryman's murder in Sibu

SIBU: An Indonesian man has been charged in the Magistrate's Court here with murdering his countryman in a garden shed on Jalan Rantau Panjang last month. No plea was recorded from Heriadi, 39, when the charge was read out to him by a court interpreter before Magistrate Romario Jonoi on Tuesday (July 8) as murder cases are under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Heriadi is charged with causing the death of Andi at about 7pm on June 22. The charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides for the mandatory death sentence, or 30 to 40 years' jail and at least 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. The court set Aug 29 for mention. In the same court, Heriadi and his wife Keti, 36, were also jointly charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 (Amendment 2002) for being in the country without valid travel documents. They were charged wth committing the offence at Jalan Teku Pasai-Siong here at about 9.50pm on June 23. The offence carries a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both upon conviction. They also face six strokes of the cane if found guilty, as provided for under Section 6(3) of the Act. No plea was recorded from either accused, and the court set July 17 for mention. – Bernama
