Baz Luhrmann reduces price of NYC townhouse to $13.99M

Film director Baz Luhrmann is once again testing the Manhattan luxury market, relisting his Gramercy Park townhouse for $13.99 million — a steep discount from its original $19.99 million asking price in March 2022, The Post has learned. The five-story, 8,500-square-foot residence has cycled on and off the market over the past three years, weathering a series of price cuts. Most recently, it was listed at $14.99 million in September 2024, following previous reductions to $18.9 million in June 2022, $17.99 million in September 2023 and $15.99 million in May 2024. Matteo Prandoni/ Luhrmann purchased the Anglo-Italianate property in 2017, at 243 E. 17th St., for $13.5 million and spent several years renovating it with his signature theatrical flair. He listed it in 2022 after finding himself less in New York and more in his native Australia — not to mention traveling through other parts of the world. Advertisement Built in the 1850s, the home sits on a rare 28-foot-wide lot facing Stuyvesant Square Park and features a stately cast-iron balcony, round-arched windows and a paneled cornice. Known for films like 'Romeo + Juliet,' 'The Great Gatsby' and 'Moulin Rouge!,' Luhrmann's stylized taste is reflected in the home's moody interiors. 10 The entryway. The brokerages did not respond to The Post's requests for comment by press time. A gated entrance opens to a landscaped front garden and leads into an entry vestibule. A prior listing highlighted the home's architectural distinction: 'It is the only Anglo-Italianate house in the district that was not originally part of a row of narrow, uniform houses.' Luhrmann and his wife, production and costume designer Catherine Martin, have lived in the home with their two children. The couple, longtime creative collaborators, married in 1997 and have worked together on many of his most celebrated films, including the 2022 Elvis Presley biopic 'Elvis.'

5 best Paul Rudd movies, ranked

One of the most likable stars in Hollywood, Paul Rudd has generated both audience goodwill and critical praise over the course of his three-decade career. He boasts tremendous variety in his work: big-budget comedies ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin", "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"), acclaimed dramas ("Romeo + Juliet", The Cider House Rules"), beloved TV series ("Friends", "Parks and Recreation" and an Emmy-nominated turn in "Only Murders in the Building" among them) and, of course, as part of the sprawling, star-studded Marvel Cinematic Universe. The star's latest project is the new A24 bromance comedy "Friendship," the directorial debut from Andrew DeYoung that co-stars cringe-comedy great Tim Robinson. With that funny flick out in theaters in limited release (it will open wide in the U.S. on May 23) and getting a solid 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating out of the gate, let's take a look back at Rudd's other acclaimed projects. Here are five of Paul Rudd's best movies, ranked. Given that Paul Rudd has become so famous in the comedy genre, it's sometimes easy to forget he's a classically trained dramatic actor. He puts both that natural humor and honed pathos to good use in a small but vital role in the 2012 coming-of-age dramedy "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," adapted from the novel of the same name by writer-director Stephen Chbosky. Rudd plays Mr. Anderson, the compassionate English teacher of introvert freshman Charlie Kelmeckis (Logan Lerman), who — along with a pair of upperclassmen misfits played by Emma Watson and Ezra Miller — help the painfully shy young teen shed his wallflower tendencies. As the empathetic educator, Rudd also gets to utter one of the book's most precious lines: "We accept the love we think we deserve." Watch 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' on Max now Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. This bromance-focused 2009 comedy is a spiritual sibling to "Friendship." Rudd plays Peter Klaven, a friendless groom-to-be looking for a best man for his upcoming nuptials to fiancée Zooey (Rashida Jones). When he meets enigmatic investor Sydney Fife (Jason Segel), however, the twosome becomes instant BFFs thanks to their shared enthusiasm for the rock band Rush. Anchored by Rudd and Segel's charm and chemistry, the bro-com is a sweet and silly send-up of the usual romantic comedy tropes, complete with hilariously awkward platonic "first dates" and the customary third-act grand gesture to usher in the pair's happily-ever-after by the movie's end. The main duo is also excellently surrounded by a top-notch comedic ensemble that includes Andy Samberg, Jaime Pressly, Jon Favreau, J.K. Simmons and, memorably, the Hulk himself, Lou Ferrigno. Watch 'I Love You, Man' on Paramount+ now Rudd's big-screen breakout came as the sarcastic ex-stepbrother — and love interest — of Alicia Silverstone's high-school socialite Cher Horowitz in the iconic 1995 comedy "Clueless", a righteous retelling of the classic Jane Austen novel "Emma." Now, the logistics behind the romantic connection between Cher and Rudd's character Josh do make things complicated and, admittedly, a bit creepy looking back, but the actors manage to evade any icky feelings with the sweet-and-salty sparring the Beverly Hills kids regularly engage in. With a cast of mostly unknowns like Rudd, Brittany Murphy and Donald Faison, "Clueless" was a surprise sleeper hit when it debuted in the summer of '95 and in the decades since is now widely regarded as one of the best teen comedies ever. We're totally buggin. Watch Clueless on Paramount+ now For more than 20 years, Rudd has engaged in a very successful creative collaboration with filmmaker Judd Apatow, kicking off with 2004's news-anchor satire "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy." We're particularly partial, though, to their 2007 partnership "Knocked Up" and its 2012 spinoff "This is 40," which sees Rudd star as talent scout Pete, who is married to Leslie Mann's Allison. Opposite Seth Rogen's Ben Stone and Katherine Heigl's Allison Scott — whose one-night stand turns into a very unexpected pregnancy — Rudd and Mann's characters are supposed to be the stable, more responsible foils to those messy, fledgling new parents. But both "Knocked Up" and its successor allow the comedians to fly those freak flags, with psychedelic mushroom trips, hotel-room hijinks and hilarious takedowns of nightclub bouncers. ("Doorman!") Watch 'Knocked Up' on Peacock now The 2015 superhero movie "Ant-Man," based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, proved a huge genre switch-up for Rudd, bringing the comedy star into the action-flick fold and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, as Scott Lang — a former systems engineer and petty criminal who acquires a suit that allows him to shrink in size but increase in strength — Rudd's easy charm and expert comedic timing are still very much on display, even when behind that futuristic helmet. Rudd would reprise his role as the eponymous Ant-Man in the 2018 sequel "Ant-Man and the Wasp" and its 2023 follow-up "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania", as well as in fellow MCU titles like "Captain America: Civil War" (2016) and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019). (He is also slated to appear in 2026's "Avengers: Doomsday".) So if you love "Paul Rudd, Superhero Star," you can really make an entire movie marathon of it. Watch Ant-Man on Disney+ now

'Juliet & Romeo': Shakespeare meets pop music for Timothy Scott Bogart's film with Rebel Wilson, Jason Isaacs

In 1968 there was Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet with Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting. In 1996 we had Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes starring in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. And in 2025 Timothy Scott Bogart has given us the musical Juliet & Romeo (now in theatres), starring Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward in the title roles, alongside Jason Isaacs as Lord Montague, Rupert Everett as Lord Capulet and Rebel Wilson as Lady Capulet. Set in 1301, filmmaker Timothy Scott Bogart takes on William Shakespeare's story about star-crossed lovers with the intention of being authentic to the Medieval time period, overlayed with pop music. Bogart also wanted to flesh out more underserved characters from the original story. Before Bogart stepped behind the camera he was an actor, initially making the transition by directing theatre, including Romeo and Juliet multiple times. "I have to be honest, ... there were moments in the piece, there were characters in the piece, there were arcs of the piece that never quite felt fully developed, because there's only so much you can put in the play," Bogart explained to Yahoo. "It was something that had been kind of haunting me from my own inability to feel like I could crack it on stage, and it just kept coming back." In terms of creating the pop music in Juliet & Romeo, Bogart enlisted the help of his brother, Evan Bogart, and Evan's writing partner Justin Gray. Evan famously wrote the Beyoncé song "Halo," alongside Ryan Tedder. But how pop music even came into the equation for Bogart's film started more than a decade ago. "I remember saying to my brother, why do you think iambic pentameter? What do you think that was about? And in the most simple, kind of off the cuff way he said, 'I think that was the poetry of their time,'" Bogart said. "I said, interesting. What's the poetry of our time? And he said, pop music." "Now my brother, of course, who wrote 'Halo' for Beyoncé, he's going to come from pop music, but he started going, think about your world. When you see kids, what are they doing? They've got headphones on. ... They're listening to music. That is how they are expressing themselves. So about 10 years earlier, this idea of music as a central way to really get inner voice, which ultimately is what Shakespeare did so beautifully and brilliantly, ... it kept coming back." The concept of the songs representing inner voice was core to Bogart's vision, particularly in how to integrate the music with the story. "I don't think there's any more important subject that we wrestled with on how best to do it," Bogart said. "There's the musicals where the milkman clearly knows he's in a musical and is singing, and even the cow knows it's in a musical and it is singing. And I didn't want anything to do with that, it's just not my cup of tea. I really was trying, from the very beginning, to use this as inner voice." "There's a scene in the movie [where] Romeo and Juliet meet in the church, and suddenly they have this wonderful song. Well I don't really think they're singing in the church. I think they're they're two young people getting to know each other in the church, but it feels like they're singing about their love. ... I believe this kind of age demographic lives in a musical world. So throughout the movie we kept finding locations and places where songs would organically be occurring. ... Their Saturday night with your pals and that's what you would be doing." But of course, Bogart had to face the task of finding his Rome and Juliet, coming after a long line of actors who have played the roles in a variety of different on-screen adaptations. "Finding Romeo and Juliet, perhaps one of the hardest things you could ever do," he said. "You start going, well OK Leonardo DiCaprio. We know what that is. You know what Claire Danes is. ... You got Tom Holland doing his version, Rachel Zegler during hers." "I wanted our Romeo and Juliet to feel like fresh faces that would bring us into this new world. And so it was finding authenticity of people that just felt so real and so human, great voices, which thankfully, Clara and Jamie absolutely have." Adding to that was Bogart commitment to research and really crafting a story that was true to what was happening at the end of Medieval times into the Renaissance, and with that came Bogart's desire to actually make this Juliet & Romeo story into a trilogy. The opportunity to look at things like royal families fighting against Pope Boniface VIII, largely recognized among the worst Popes in history. "If Star Wars was the first, then Empire Strikes Back, and that's not terribly dissimilar to what we're trying," Bogart said. "The origin of the franchise really was birthed from my exploration of the real life story." "It really is a much bigger story about really the exciting characters of that time at perhaps the most transformative moment of that time."

Baz Luhrmann, 62, looks worlds away from his former self as he displays wrinkle-free complexion and plump cheeks at 2025 Met Gala

Baz Luhrmann has been at the centre of cosmetic surgery accusations for years. And the award-winning filmmaker, 62, did little to dispel rumours as he attended the 2025 Met Gala in New York City on Monday. The iconic Australian director looked very different from when he shot to fame in 1992 with his hit film Strictly Ballroom. Lurhmann displayed a wrinkle-free complexion and very plump cheeks as he walked the red carpet with his wife Catherine Martin. His visage appeared shiny, while his jawline seemed noticeably more pronounced than they did during his former years in the spotlight. Earlier in his career, Lurhmann sported a rugged appearance with natural wrinkles. The director made a style statement at the Met Gala with his wife Catherine. The award-winning filmmaker channelled German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld as he arrived in a striped suit jacket, a white vest and matching coloured pants. He completed his eccentric look with a colourful tie, round glasses and wore a pair of black dress shoes. Baz was joined by his wife Catherine, who looked glamorous in a long black and navy gown which featured sheer sleeves. She accessorised with a large green and white necklace, patterned shoes and large framed blue glasses. The couple, who've been married for almost three decades, proved their relationship is stronger than ever as they put on a loved-up display on the red carpet. Their red carpet appearance comes after it was recently reported that Baz and Catherine appear to be living separate lives. Award-winning filmmaker Baz was spotted at Taylor Swift 's Sydney concert in February last year in the singer's star-studded box alongside her NFL star boyfriend Travis Kelce, Katy Perry and fellow filmmaker Taika Waititi and his wife Rita Ora. The Romeo + Juliet director was seen dancing like no one was watching, his wife notably missing despite the fact they were living on Gold Coast at the time, a short one hour and 20 minute flight from Sydney. The couple also recently moved into 'a shack' in the Miami beach area, downsizing from a larger home they were residing in after they relocated to the glitter strip in 2020 to make their sixth film Elvis. In an interview with The Australian's Wish magazine, Martin spoke about doing long distance with her husband. The Academy Award-winning Costume Designer said the pair speak regularly on the phone when he is in New York and she stays at their seaside Gold Coast shack. Martin said she was enjoying the 'work/life balance' on the Gold Coast, where she goes for daily long morning walks on the beach and classes at her local Pilates studio. 'I called Baz this morning, I was walking on the way to Pilates and he was marvelling at the weather, because he's in New York,' she said in the interview at the time. Meanwhile, Baz was forced to put split rumours to rest after fans noted eerie similarities with Aussie actor Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness' failed marriage. The director confirmed the pair were still very much in love. Baz and Martin have been married for 28 years and just saw their own children Lilly, 20, and William, 18, move out of home.
