Mundy: 'The Lobby in Cork was the first place you'd plant your seed'
MUNDY'S ties with Cork go back a long way. Over three decades, he's played more than a dozen venues, at all angles of the compass, in the county. One of his first performances was at a festival in Noel C Duggan's arena at Millstreet, but his strongest memory is from a gig at the Lobby Bar — an iconic live music venue in Cork City. 'In the early 2000s, there was a great Irish music revival with all these acts... The Frames, Damien Rice, Mic Christopher, Gemma Hayes; Josh Ritter and David Gray were a part of it, too,' he says. 'The Lobby was the first place that you'd plant your seed. It might have held 90 or a 100 people but your career grew from there by selling out the Lobby a few times and then you'd go to a bigger venue.' 'One night, I did my own gig. The Frames were playing at the Marquee, with other great artists supporting them. They all ended up down in the Lobby after my gig. We took to the streets busking then after it, around the corner from the Lobby, all out playing guitars, singing and drinking, having the craic. It was a special night. I went on to Ballycotton the night after, and half of them followed me out there as well.' Mundy, 50, shot to prominence in 1996 when a track, To You I Bestow, from his debut album featured on the soundtrack for the hit movie Romeo + Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. His second album, 24 Star Hotel, released in 2002, features probably his signature tune, July, an incomparable ode to summer. # Mundy. Picture: Anthony Mulcahy Over the years, he's supported giants of the trade, including REM, Bob Dylan, and a personal hero, Neil Young, with whom he shared a stage at Dublin's old Point Depot in 1996. 'I got the biggest guest list ever for that gig, something like a hundred people,' he says. 'I couldn't get rid of the tickets, as in I didn't know 100 people in Dublin that would go! I was a huge Neil Young fan. I grew up in Birr, CountyOffaly. We played songs from Harvest and After the Gold Rush nearly every time we'd do a session in my parents' pub. I invited all my mates from Birr that were around. The guts of them came — even a friend of mine whose wife was due to give birth that night. 'I had the same booking agent as Neil Young. I met him after the gig. I said, 'Listen, thanks so much for making a dream come true, but I'd love to meet Neil Young.' He said, 'OK, let's go look for him.' We went backstage, couldn't find him. Went into his dressing room, it was all incense burning and Indian rugs on the wall. We went back out to the stage, and there he was in the middle of all the crew with a pair of leather gloves on, lifting up gear, packing it away with the roadies. Getting his hands dirty... not a problem for him.' 'The same night, Michelle Smith was going for her last gold medal in the Olympics, and we went to the bar, and I sat with Neil Young, and I had a couple of pints of Murphy's with him, and we watched her swimming. His dad was there. His dad lived in Howth for a while.' In 2008, Mundy teamed up with Sharon Shannon on Steve Earle's song, Galway Girl, leading to another summer anthem and a long-running chart-topper. Mundy has been a long-time collaborator with Sharon Shannon. His Christmas-time performance from 2008 of Rainy Night in Soho with Shane MacGowan, during a Sharon Shannon Big Band with Special Guests live recording for TG4, is worth digging out on YouTube. MUNDY, along with Nick Cave and Camille O'Sullivan, was one of the performers at their old friend Shane MacGowan's funeral in December 2023, in Nenagh, County Tipperary, only half an hour's drive from Birr, his hometown. The funeral Mass had several resonances for him. 'One of the amazing things was that the priest, Fr Pat Gilbert, who did the service, was my religion teacher in school,' he says. 'He baptised my daughter. He also brought music, rock 'n' roll, to our school — he brought a drum kit, a bass amp, and electric guitar into the classroom. There were two other priests from Birr on the altar too, so I felt really supported that day.' Mundy will perform at The White Horse, Ballincollig, Cork, 8.30pm, Friday, August 15. See:

John Leguizamo slams 'moron' Superman star Dean Cain for joining ICE
The actor and comedian called 'moron' Dean Cain out after the former Superman star announced he would be joining ICE John Leguizamo blasted Dean Cain, a vocal Trump supporter, for his decision to sign up with ICE, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The esteemed actor and advocate, who moved from Colombia to the U.S. at the age of three, took to Instagram with a video lambasting the ex-Superman actor. Dean, known for his role as Superman in the '90s hit show Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, has recently been critical of the latest Superman series for its progressive themes. He stirred controversy by announcing on social media his new affiliation with ICE, coinciding with the Department of Homeland Security's push for recruitment following a budget boost. In a fierce critique, the star of Romeo + Juliet mocked, "What kind of loser volunteers to be an ICE officer? What a moron. Dean Cain, your pronouns are 'has/been.'" This clash follows Dean's own video post on social media, where he encouraged others to enlist in ICE. "Hey everybody, Dean Cain here. For those who don't know, I am a sworn law enforcement officer, as well as being a filmmaker, and I felt it was important to join with our first responders to help secure the safety of all Americans, not just talk about it. So, I joined up," he declared, reports the Mirror US. "Since President Trump took office, ICE has arrested hundreds of thousands of criminals, including terrorists, rapists, murderers, pedophiles, MS-13 gang members, drug traffickers, you name it - very dangerous people who are no longer on the streets," he added. "So now I've spoken with some officials over at ICE, and I will be sworn in as an ICE agent ASAP." The initiative is part of a broader push by the Trump administration and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to boost recruitment efforts. DHS has recently declared plans to scrap the age limit and reduce the minimum age requirement to 18, along with perks such as a $50,000 sign-on bonus and student loan forgiveness. CNN Newsnight's panelists chimed in, too. Commentator Scott Jennings remarked, "Having someone like that out touting it, talking about, 'Hey, this is a thing you can do for your government, this is a public service,' it's going to help them recruit and they have a bunch of people to recruit." Podcaster Van Lathan retorted, "Scott, it's not '95. Nobody gives a Sam Hill what Dean Cain does." He continued, "Dean ain't worked in a while. Dean needs the 50,000. That's what got Dean off the couch. Dean ain't worked in a while. Dean gonna take that money and buy some crypto. Dean need the 50. That's what Dean is on."

Rugby ace Jordan Turner-Hall marries girlfriend at three-day vineyard wedding
Former rugby union player Jordan Turner-Hall tied the knot with his beautiful bride Sophie Burles in a stunning ceremony at a Sussex vineyard. Here, the couple open up about their love bubble'... After meeting almost two decades ago, tying the knot was a long time coming for former rugby union player Jordan Turner-Hall and his fiancée Sophie Burles. But when the pair finally said 'I do' at picturesque Sussex vineyard Rathfinny Wine Estate, it felt like everything had fallen into place. 'It was such an amazing day. We just had a big party and celebrated our love,' says bride Sophie, 36, when we chat just days after their stunning nuptials. And she and Jordan, 37, admit they're still 'in a bubble' after their magical day. The celebrations kicked off on Friday 20 June with a barbecue at the venue for 40 of their nearest and dearest – and they didn't do it half-heartedly. 'Friday was a bit of a late one, so we were all slightly hungover,' former Harlequins centre Jordan admits. 'But thankfully the wedding wasn't until 3pm the next day, so we had time to have a good breakfast and get feeling good again.' Delicate heads aside, the couple, who got engaged during a dreamy holiday in Santorini two years ago, looked picture perfect on their big day. Sophie – who admits she followed a gruelling pre-wedding diet – opted for a beautiful off-the-shoulder wedding gown by Essense of Australia, with a lengthy train flowing behind her. 'Everything I thought I wanted in a dress went out of the window when it came to shopping for it. None of what I wanted suited me,' she says of her bridal shopping experience. 'It was my sister who said I should try on the one I eventually chose – and it was just perfect.' It certainly ticked all the boxes for Jordan, who admits that despite his tough guy image he struggled to hold back his emotions when he saw Sophie walking down the aisle. 'I was blown away,' he says. 'I didn't think I'd get so emotional but when I saw Sophie coming down with the kids and bridesmaids, they all looked beautiful. It was overwhelming. I was immensely proud and happy. I'm not used to talking about me and our love so openly but yeah, it definitely hit me. It was beautiful.' It's no surprise Jordan had tears in his eyes during the ceremony, which also included the couple's children Marnie, 11, Mason, nine, and six-year-old Cassius. Sophie, who met Jordan when she was just 19 years old, was proudly walked down the aisle by Mason as Romeo + Juliet movie hit I'm Kissing You , by singer Des'ree, played – a song that has always been special to the couple. 'Our daughter Marnie was a bridesmaid, then Mason walked me down the aisle while Cassius was the ringbearer,' Sophie says. 'Mason almost chickened out. I was like, 'Please don't leave me on my own!' But he did it and it was quite emotional. All the bridesmaids started crying just before we walked, so I had to try not to look at them or it would have set me off.' She adds, 'The kids were so excited. They were telling everybody at school about it. We wanted to get married a long time ago, but I'm glad I did it now, so the kids could be such a key part of it.' Sealing their union with personalised vows, Jordan, it seems, had a tight turnaround writing his. Sophie says, 'I'd written mine a long time ago, then two days before the wedding Jordan was like, 'What are the vows?' and he had to write his. But they were really nice in the end.' Jordan tells us he was too focused on planning his groom's speech for later in the day – and thankfully, all the effort was worth it. The speech, he says, had their 100 guests both laughing and crying as they toasted the couple with a glass of Sussex sparkling rosé, made on site at the venue's vineyard. 'I did quite a lot of research into my speech and didn't want to just list off thank yous to everyone,' he says. 'So I said nice things and also tried to get the energy up in the room.' All of the speeches were emotional, everyone loved them,' Sophie adds. Steering away from tradition, the couple opted for a sharing-style meal with grazing steak boards by catering company The Herb Kitchen for guests to tuck into. Then it was time for everyone to let their hair down. 'We've been to so many weddings where people were waiting around for things, and we wanted ours to be quick, so we could get to the fun part. We wanted everyone on the dance floor just enjoying a big party – and that's exactly what we did,' Sophie says. There were a few familiar faces enjoying their day of love, including presenter Zoe Hardman and her husband, former rugby player Paul Doran Jones, and a string of Jordan's rugby pals including Danny Care, Nick Evans, Joe Marler and David Strettle. Jordan and Sophie admit they deliberately seated the rugby players far from the top table, to keep noise levels at bay. 'There was a rugby table and I think they were having the best time ever,' says Sophie. 'Jordan put them right at the very end so there wasn't too much commotion.' 'Yeah, there were a few drinking games going on over there,' he laughs. The couple couldn't be happier with how their special day went. Their only regret is that they're not jetting off on honeymoon sooner. 'The kids went straight back to school the Monday after and we were back to normal life,' says Sophie. 'We would have liked to go on a honeymoon straight away but we're planning a trip to Italy later this year.' While they wish they could revisit their big day, the pair are glad to be stress-free after a frenetic period of wedding planning. 'The month before the wedding it got stressful, especially the last two weeks. We had guests saying last minute that they couldn't come or asking to bring other guests, which was hard. And all the small details, like sorting stationery, it was challenging,' admits Sophie. Jordan adds, 'There were quite a few pre-wedding arguments. But we agreed that when the day came, we'd let go of all the stress and just enjoy it, which is what we did.' The stress wouldn't put them off doing it all again though. 'I think one day we'd like to renew our vows in the same place, that would be really nice,' Sophie says. 'Can we do it for half the price next time, though?' laughs Jordan, and his new wife nods reassuringly. Looking to the future, the couple also say more children aren't off the cards. 'I love babies and I'm definitely broody,' Sophie admits with a giggle. 'But it is hard work and Jordan's away a lot, so it would probably send me over the edge having another one. We got a second dog at Christmas, so that's suppressed the broodiness, for now. But watch this space.'
