Angels SS Zach Neto leaves game in 9th inning with apparent injury after making an error

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shortstop Zach Neto abruptly left the Los Angeles Angels' game against Boston in the ninth inning after making an error Tuesday night. Neto bobbled Romy Gonzalez's grounder to short before firing his throw over the head of first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. Neto quickly bent over in pain, and he left the game after consulting with the Angels' staff. Neto injured his right shoulder last September and underwent surgery that forced him to miss the first three weeks of the current season. He has been one of the Angels' best players for the second straight year, batting .278 with 12 homers, 29 RBIs and an .820 OPS. Los Angeles closer Kenley Jansen escaped the jam created by Neto's error, keeping the game tied 1-1. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Jeff Chiu) SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Heliot Ramos doubled home two runs to highlight San Francisco's decisive seventh inning after an earlier two-run single, and the Giants rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-5 on Sunday. Casey Schmitt and Mike Yastrzemski each hit solo home runs in the fifth against Red Sox starter Luis Giolito and Willy Adames connected in the eighth. Advertisement With Adames and Schmitt each aboard on hits to start the seventh, Tyler Fitzgerald bunted home the tying run to chase reliever Greg Weissert (2-2) and San Francisco went ahead when Red Sox second baseman Romy González missed a routine catch on Yastrzemski's liner off Justin Wilson. Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run homer in the fifth and González homered one out later for the Red Sox, then the Giants cleared the fences twice in the bottom half to tie the game at 4. Ceddanne Rafaela homered in the sixth for Boston. After the Red Sox went ahead in the first on a fielding error by Ramos in left field, he delivered with the single in the third. Advertisement Thousands of fans from the sellout crowd of 40,350 lined up more than three hours before first pitch to receive a Jung Hoo Lee giveaway jersey. Giants lefty Robbie Ray struck out seven and walked one over five innings, allowing three earned runs and eight hits. Erik Miller (4-0) pitched the seventh for the win. Key moment Boston's Jarren Duran and manager Alex Cora were ejected in the eighth after Duran argued a tag call at second base that had been upheld on replay review. Duran singled to right and was out at second on a throw by Yastrzemski to shortstop Adames. Duran, visibly shown swearing, was tossed by second base umpire Doug Eddings as the outfielder walked toward the dugout. He then turned around and tried to approach Eddings before being held back. Cora rushed out to argue and also was ejected. Advertisement Key stat The Giants improved to a majors-best 15-2 in home day games. They have hit 44 home runs in afternoon contests this year. Up next RHP Walker Buehler (5-5, 5.95 ERA) pitches for Boston in Monday's series opener in Anaheim against the Angels. The Giants have a day off Monday before RHP Justin Verlander (0-4, 4.45) tries again Tuesday for his first victory. ___ AP MLB:

Red Sox to abandon Kristian Campbell experiment at first base

BOSTON — On their last homestand, the Red Sox were moving forward with their plans to have Kristian Campbell be part of the solution to their first base vacancy. As recently as late last week, they got as far as identifying a game (Sunday in Atlanta) for Campbell's debut at the position before changing that plan Sunday morning thanks to Abraham Toro's recent hot streak. Advertisement But on Monday, manager Alex Cora acknowledged that the return of Romy Gonzalez from the Injured List, coupled with Toro's play of late, was enough to table the Campbell-at-first experiment, at least for now. Campbell may still some work pre-game at first in the event the Sox turn to him late in a game, after either pinch-hitting or pinch-running moves thin out the bench. 'Toro's play has helped us slow down that,' said Cora. 'Romy's going to play first, Toro's going to play first. (Campbell) will still take grounders here and there, but it's nothing that we're planning on doing now.' With Campbell focused mostly at second — and presumably the occasional game in the outfield — the hope is that Campbell can get going offensively again. Advertisement After being chosen as the AL Rookie of the Month for March/April, Campbell nosedived in May, finishing the month with a slash line of .134/.184/.171 with just one extra base hit and four RBI. 'When you don't have too many reps,' said Cora, 'it's hard. He's played one year in the big leagues and we have high expectations. Now it's time our time to help him to make adjustments and get him to where we want him to be. 'He was the best rookie in April. He wasn't one of the best hitters in May and now we're in June. Hopefully, that experience, those at-bats and the wat they attacked him helped him to make adjustments and we can help him through that. 'He's a guy who, you give him information and he applies it. But this is a different level. It is. The stuff is a lot different than in the minor leagues. We still believe in the swing. We still believe in the character. Obviously, we're going to go through stretches. We'll try to help him out, keep the confidence up, and remind him that he's still a good player regardless of what the numbers say. Hopefully, it takes one swing, one bullet to right-center that goes out and it clicks for him.' More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.
