Rockies Suffer Major Loss Before Mets Game
Rockies Suffer Major Loss Before Mets Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Colorado Rockies are as hot as a 12-50 team could be heading into their bout with the New York Mets on Friday night. They swept the Miami Marlins on the road in their last series after losing their previous seven contests, outscoring them 12-8 over the three games. Advertisement Colorado's offense has been unreliable, as they've scored at least four runs in just five of their last 20 games. Even in their sweep of the Marlins, the Rockies won the latter two contests 3-2 after winning the opener 6-4. The team will now have to play New York without an important bat, via Rockies PR. Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar (14).Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Colorado placed shortstop Ezequiel Tovar on the 10-day IL (retroactive to June 3) with a left oblique strain ahead of the game. It also selected the contract of infielder Ryan Ritter from Triple-A Albuquerque, recalled catcher Braxton Fulford from Triple-A, reinstated right-handed pitcher Zach Agnos from the bereavement list, and unconditionally released catcher Jacob Stallings. Tovar is slashing .258/.301/406 with three homers and 10 RBI over 32 games this season. The 23-year-old had a career year in 2024, slashing .269/.295/.469 with 26 homers and 78 RBI over 157 contests. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Mets are coming off a 2-2 series split vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road. They hold a 1.5-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the NL East and are a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs for the NL's top seed. New York will finish its road trip in Colorado before hosting the Washington Nationals. Numbers show how historically bad Rockies are — even after beating Yankees
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free DENVER — It is not unusual for an unmistakable smell to be wafting around these parts. But this is a different kind of stench, even for the Mile High City: It is the Colorado Rockies, owners of a dumbfounding 9-42 record — 8-42 before they beat the Yankees on Friday night — whose biggest accomplishment has been making the astonishingly terrible 2024 White Sox not look so bad. The Yankees arrived here Friday to face a Rockies team whose 42 losses through its first 50 games were the most for a major league team in the modern era, going back to 1901. Even after Friday's win, they were on pace for a whopping 29 wins — as in 29-133, which would rival the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (134) for the most losses in a major league season. Last year's White Sox finished 41-121 — one of those wins, a 12-2 shellacking, coming against the Yankees — breaking the 1962 Mets record (120) for the most losses in the modern era. Through 50 games, they were 15-35, seven games ahead of these Rockies. 'Obviously, it's been a tough start to the season for them, no other way to put it,' manager Aaron Boone said before Friday's game. 'That being said, for those of us who have been around this game for a long, long time — it's baseball. Anything can happen on any given night.' Zach Agnos celebrates after closing out the Rockies' 3-2 win over the Yankees on May 23, 2025. Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images The last time the Rockies made the playoffs, DJ LeMahieu was part of their core with Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon in 2018. LeMahieu signed with the Yankees that offseason, and the Rockies are an MLB-worst 368-552 since then. 'I feel like I made a pretty good choice,' LeMahieu said with a grin. 'I'm happy to be here.' In 16 series this season, the Rockies have been swept in eight of them. They have lost two of three games in the other half. Rockies players celebrate after their win over the Yankees, their ninth of the season. Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images The Rockies had scored the second-fewest runs per game (3.28) and allowed the most (6.46). They had struck out more than any other team (488) and thrown the fewest strikeouts (322). They had committed 45 errors, were tied for the worst OPS-plus in the majors (74) and been shut out eight times — the same amount the Yankees were blanked all of last season. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS General manager Bill Schmidt gave then-manager Bud Black a vote of confidence May 10, only for the Rockies to get demolished 21-0 that night. By the following day, Black was fired. The Rockies are 2-9 since then under interim manager Warren Schaeffer. He is making $27 million this season on their projected luxury tax payroll of $147.1 million, the 10th-lowest in the majors. 'Just spending so many years here, I still root for them,' LeMahieu said. 'Not this weekend, but from afar, I always root for them. A lot of good people around here still since I was here. It's been a tough go for them this first month and a half or so.'

Nuggets Make Russell Westbrook, Michael Porter Jr. Announcement Before Game 6 vs. Clippers
The Denver Nuggets are on the road on Thursday night for Game 6 of their first-round series against the Los Angeles Clippers. Thursday's game is a massive one for both sides as the Nuggets look to clinch the series with a victory while the Clippers need to win to keep their season alive. Advertisement Of course, the Nuggets dominated Game 5 of the series on their home court on Tuesday night behind incredible performances from Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon and Nikola Jokic. Now, Denver will look to wrap up the series and advance to the second round where they will meet the Oklahoma City Thunder. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Ahead of Thursday's game, Denver received some positive news regarding two of their key players. Denver announced that both Russell Westbrook and Michael Porter Jr. will be available to play in Game 6 despite dealing with injuries. For Westbrook, he was limited in Game 3 and then was sidelined for Game 4 due to right foot inflammation. Advertisement The former MVP was able to return for Game 5 on Tuesday where he had a great performance off the bench and he will now be available for the Nuggets in Game 6 despite being listed as probable before the game. For Porter Jr., he was also listed as probable due to a left shoulder sprain that has bothered him throughout most of the series. Despite this, Porter Jr. has not missed any time due to the injury and he will be a full go on Thursday night. This is massive news for the Nuggets who will have their entire core available for Game 6 in Los Angeles as they try to close out the series with a victory. Fans can catch Thursday's Game 6 matchup between the Nuggets and Clippers from Los Angeles at 10:00 p.m. EST on TNT.

Big 12 Spotlight: Notable pipelines to high school talent factories
© Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images A major part of recruiting is coaching staffs getting their foot in the door at high school programs that annually produce multiple high-level, Power Four players. And once a coaching staff can create a pipeline at these high school football factories, it can be one of the biggest built-in recruiting advantages every year. Advertisement This week, we are taking a look at which Power Four programs have an established pipeline at certain high school football factories. Next up is the Big 12. THIS SERIES: Notable SEC pipelines to high school football talent factories | ACC CLASS OF 2025 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2026 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State CLASS OF 2027 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | Position | State TRANSFER PORTAL: Full coverage | Player ranking | Team ranking | Transfer search | Transfer Tracker CHANDLER (ARIZ.) HAMILTON - ARIZONA © Aryanna Frank-Imagn Images One of the biggest aspects in Arizona high school recruiting in at least the last decade has been Arizona and Arizona State's difficulties keeping top-flight, in-state talent home. Advertisement The state's top player this recruiting cycle, Tait Reynolds, is committed to Clemson. Last cycle, Cooper Perry went to Oregon. And on and on. But Arizona has done an excellent job locking up top players from powerhouse Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton as the Wildcats have found a ton of success there. Five players on the roster – linebacker Taye Brown, receiver Tre Spivey, offensive lineman Grayson Stovall and defensive backs Genesis Smith and Dajon Hinton – all come from that school in the Phoenix suburbs that's less than two hours away. Arizona is back in Chandler, Ariz. – but not at Hamilton HS – for three-star athlete Hamisi Juma in this recruiting class. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH ARIZONA FANS AT BRADENTON (FLA.) IMG ACADEMY - COLORADO Nick Lucero/ Advertisement Every top program goes to Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy for its top prospects but Colorado and coach Deion Sanders have had an inordinate amount of success there, especially convincing top players to head all the way out to Boulder. Landing five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, who had an impressive freshman season with the Buffaloes, was the biggest win from IMG for Colorado. Flipping four-star defensive lineman London Merritt from Ohio State late last recruiting cycle was a major win as well. High three-star defensive end Alexander McPherson has the physical tools to be special. So much of Colorado's roster management will be through the transfer portal. But hitting up IMG Academy is never a bad idea and building an even bigger pipeline there should only benefit the Buffs. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH COLORADO FANS AT DRAPER (UTAH) CORNER CANYON - UTAH © Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Advertisement The Utah coaching staff has done an impressive job at Kahuku, Hawaii, as well but the Utes are doing really well at powerhouse Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon, which continues to pump out elite players in nearly every recruiting class. Utah has not gotten everybody out of there as quarterbacks Jaxson Dart and Helaman Casuga and receiver Jerome Myles got away. But the Utes have landed current quarterback Isaac Wilson, offensive lineman Isaiah Garcia and defensive end Kash Dillon out of there. A tremendous amount of talent comes out of the state of Utah and many of them play at Corner Canyon. Keeping that pipeline open especially for an in-state school is a big deal and one that could keep paying dividends. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH UTAH FANS AT SANFORD (FLA.) SEMINOLE - UCF © Russell Lansford-Imagn Images Advertisement What started with Gabe Davis of the Jacksonville Jaguars going to UCF from Sanford (Fla.) Seminole has continued as a major pipeline for the Knights with numerous players on the current roster from Bokey Football. Defensive backs Ja'Cari Henderson, Chasen Johnson and Demari Henderson and linebacker Kam Moore are all from powerhouse Sanford Seminole, which is just 20 minutes north of UCF's campus. If first-year coach Scott Frost is going to find massive success again at UCF, keeping local players home will be crucial and it all starts at Sanford Seminole. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH UCF FANS AT

BYU Guard Egor Demin Declares for NBA Draft
Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Egor Demin gave BYU fans some hope, but the heralded freshman will leave BYU after one season in Provo and declare for the NBA Draft. ESPN's Jonathan Givony was the first to report the news. Two sources confirmed the news to me yesterday. Egor will hold a press conference at 10am MT. *Update* Egor announced in the press conference that he has declared for the draft. Advertisement A 5-star player in the 2024 recruiting class, Demin has been unanimously pegged as a first round pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and a lottery pick by many pundits. Egor struggled at times during his freshman year, but he was one of BYU's top players as a freshman and a huge part of BYU's Sweet 16 run. For the season, Egor averaged 10.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. He scored 15 points in BYU's first round win over VCU; nearly had a triple double with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and just one turnover versus Wisconsin to lead BYU to the Sweet 16; and versus Alabama had 15 points and 7 assists. Egor struggled at times with turnovers and shot 27% from three, but NBA spacing should work in Egor's favor and have GMs see the immense upside that could propel him to the lottery. With Egor gone, point guard now becomes BYU's top priority to fill this offseason. I'll have a follow up article with some names that I'm watching. More from
