Big 12 Spotlight: Notable pipelines to high school talent factories

A major part of recruiting is coaching staffs getting their foot in the door at high school programs that annually produce multiple high-level, Power Four players. And once a coaching staff can create a pipeline at these high school football factories, it can be one of the biggest built-in recruiting advantages every year.

This week, we are taking a look at which Power Four programs have an established pipeline at certain high school football factories. Next up is the Big 12.

CHANDLER (ARIZ.) HAMILTON - ARIZONA

One of the biggest aspects in Arizona high school recruiting in at least the last decade has been Arizona and Arizona State's difficulties keeping top-flight, in-state talent home.

The state's top player this recruiting cycle, Tait Reynolds, is committed to Clemson. Last cycle, Cooper Perry went to Oregon. And on and on. But Arizona has done an excellent job locking up top players from powerhouse Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton as the Wildcats have found a ton of success there.
Five players on the roster – linebacker Taye Brown, receiver Tre Spivey, offensive lineman Grayson Stovall and defensive backs Genesis Smith and Dajon Hinton – all come from that school in the Phoenix suburbs that's less than two hours away.
Arizona is back in Chandler, Ariz. – but not at Hamilton HS – for three-star athlete Hamisi Juma in this recruiting class.

BRADENTON (FLA.) IMG ACADEMY - COLORADO

Every top program goes to Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy for its top prospects but Colorado and coach Deion Sanders have had an inordinate amount of success there, especially convincing top players to head all the way out to Boulder.
Landing five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, who had an impressive freshman season with the Buffaloes, was the biggest win from IMG for Colorado. Flipping four-star defensive lineman London Merritt from Ohio State late last recruiting cycle was a major win as well. High three-star defensive end Alexander McPherson has the physical tools to be special.
So much of Colorado's roster management will be through the transfer portal. But hitting up IMG Academy is never a bad idea and building an even bigger pipeline there should only benefit the Buffs.

DRAPER (UTAH) CORNER CANYON - UTAH

The Utah coaching staff has done an impressive job at Kahuku, Hawaii, as well but the Utes are doing really well at powerhouse Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon, which continues to pump out elite players in nearly every recruiting class.
Utah has not gotten everybody out of there as quarterbacks Jaxson Dart and Helaman Casuga and receiver Jerome Myles got away. But the Utes have landed current quarterback Isaac Wilson, offensive lineman Isaiah Garcia and defensive end Kash Dillon out of there.
A tremendous amount of talent comes out of the state of Utah and many of them play at Corner Canyon. Keeping that pipeline open especially for an in-state school is a big deal and one that could keep paying dividends.

SANFORD (FLA.) SEMINOLE - UCF

What started with Gabe Davis of the Jacksonville Jaguars going to UCF from Sanford (Fla.) Seminole has continued as a major pipeline for the Knights with numerous players on the current roster from Bokey Football.
Defensive backs Ja'Cari Henderson, Chasen Johnson and Demari Henderson and linebacker Kam Moore are all from powerhouse Sanford Seminole, which is just 20 minutes north of UCF's campus.
If first-year coach Scott Frost is going to find massive success again at UCF, keeping local players home will be crucial and it all starts at Sanford Seminole.

Struggling Rockies snap five-game skid, avoid setting new record for worst start in modern era
Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies got a win on Thursday and avoided reaching a new low and setting the record for the worst start in the modern era. Orlando Arcia's two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Rockies an 8-7 win over the San Francisco Giants. It moved Colorado's record to 13-55 — tied with the 1932 Boston Red Sox for the worst. That Red Sox team also won its 68th game. The Rockies are aware of the record, but it is not something they dwell on. 'We look at it,' Ryan McMahon said. 'I know it to a 'T.' I think we all do, man.' After a 9-50 start, the Rockies have made some recent headway under interim manager Warren Schaeffer. They are 4-5 in their last nine after breaking a five-game losing streak. 'I think we are just playing better baseball,' said McMahon, who drew a walk in the ninth inning and scored the winning run. 'As long as you focus on that when you are out in the field, the record takes care of itself. We can't get it all back in one day. We have to take it pitch by pitch, day by day.' The poor start was 'bad, man,' he continued. 'I think that almost made it a little bit easier, because you don't want to think about it. You want to just focus on what you are doing every day when you get here and keep trying to win more games. 'To do what we did today, not give up, keep fighting. I think overall, that's just big. You can look back at that. You can remember we've come back from situations like this before and that It kind of helps you keep going.' Arcia has been part of winning organizations in Milwaukee and Atlanta in his 10-year career, and has played in the postseason each of the last seven years. 'We're not focusing on what happened in the past,' said Arcia, acquired May 28 after being released by Atlanta. 'We're taking it day by day. We're just trying to look to the future. I told my people I came here to do a job, and to come out and play and help this team win however I can.' ___ AP MLB:

Connor Hellebuyck wins NHL's MVP award; Kings' Anze Kopitar wins Lady Byng award
Winnipeg's Connor Hellebuyck has won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goaltender, becoming the first at the position to do so since Carey Price a decade ago. Hellebuyck was unveiled as the top MVP vote-getter on an awards show Thursday night prior to Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, hosted by actor and former Arizona State wide receiver Isaiah Mustafa. Kings captain Anze Kopitar won the Lady Byng for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct for a third time. Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl finished second in the Hart voting and Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov third, a single point ahead of Colorado's reigning MVP Nathan MacKinnon, as chosen by members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Hellebuyck was a landslide winner of the Vezina as picked by general managers, receiving 31 of 32 first-place votes. Hellebuyck won the Vezina for a second year in a row and for the third time in his career. He backstopped the Jets to the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular season and the William Jennings Trophy for the fewest goals allowed before losing in the second round of the playoffs to Dallas. Price was the last to pull off the Hart-Vezina double in 2015. Hellebuyck is just the sixth goalie to do it, joining Price, Jose Theodore in 2002, Dominik Hasek in 1997 and '98 and Jacques Plante in '62. Kucherov, the Art Ross Trophy winner for leading all scorers with 122 points this season, was also chosen for the Ted Lindsay Award as most outstanding player, as voted on by his peers. The Russian winger was MVP in 2019 when the Lightning finished atop the standings. Draisaitl, the Rocket Richard Trophy recipient for scoring a league-high 52 goals, won the Hart in 2020 after the season was cut short by the pandemic. He became the first German player to be MVP. A majority of the awards were already presented over the past few weeks, given out as surprises for the first time with no advanced notice. Colorado's Cale Makar got the Norris as the top defenseman, Florida's Aleksander Barkov the Selke as the best defensive forward and Washington's Spencer Carbery the Jack Adams as coach of the year.
