Spencer Schwellenbach stymies Red Sox on 25th birthday in Braves' 5-0 victory
By RICK FARLOW Associated Press Spencer Schwellenbach struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings on his 25th birthday to help the Atlanta Braves beat the Boston Red Sox 5-0 on Saturday. Schwellenbach (4-1) allowed five hits and didn't walk a batter. He rebounded against the Red Sox after giving up a grand slam to Rafael Devers in a 10-4 loss May 18 in Boston. Schwellenbach has gone six-plus innings in four consecutive starts and it was the ninth time in 12 starts he's made it into at least the sixth inning this season. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Austin Riley hit fourth-inning home runs off Walker Buehler (4-3). Buehler allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Key moment The Braves scored four runs in fourth to take a 5-0 lead. It was just the third time since May 5 the Braves have scored at least four runs in an inning. Key stat Schwellenbach threw 10 pitches 99 mph or more in the first two innings. Those were the 10 fastest pitches of his career. Before Saturday, his fastest was 98.9 mph. Up next LHP Garrett Crochet (4-4, 2.04 ERA) was set to start for Boston against RHP Bryce Elder (2-2, 4.50) on Sunday in the series finale.

Sub-.500 Braves remain optimistic thanks to Acuña's demonstration of power and good health in return
ATLANTA — The restored health of Ronald Acuña Jr. gives the Atlanta Braves reason for optimism despite again falling two games under .500 after losing two of three games to the San Diego Padres. Acuña played all three games against the Padres and immediately flashed his impressive all-around athleticism in his return after missing almost a full year following surgery on his left knee.

Cronenworth hits go-ahead homer in 7th to power Padres past Braves, 5-3
ATLANTA (AP) — Jake Cronenworth hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning for the second of San Diego's three long balls, helping the Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 5-3 on Sunday to win the three-game series. Gavin Sheets and Manny Machado homered for San Diego, which ended a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory in Friday night. By winning two of three in the series, the Padres received a boost after placing right-hander Michael King on the 15-day disabled list before the game with inflammation in his right shoulder. Ronald Acuña Jr. had a double and a walk with two strikeouts for the Braves after hitting long home runs in each of his first two games of the season. Acuña, the 2023 NL MVP, was activated from the injured list Friday almost a year after he tore his left ACL. Atlanta right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (3-4) matched his career high with 11 strikeouts while giving up four runs, two earned, in seven innings. Atlanta led 3-1 through five innings. Key moment After a fielding error by Braves third baseman Austin Riley on Luis Arreaz's grounder, Sheets' two-run homer off Schwellenbach in the sixth tied it at 3. Key stat Padres right-hander Dylan Cease earned his seventh no-decision after giving up three runs in five innings with eight strikeouts. Cease, from Milton near Atlanta, has lost his last three decisions since his only win on April 2 against Cleveland. Jeremiah Estrada (2-3) pitched a scoreless sixth and Robert Suarez recorded the final three outs for his 17th save.
