Roscommon's Donie Smith retires from intercounty football
Roscommon forward Donie Smith has announced his intercounty retirement. Smith, who won two Connacht senior football titles, made his Roscommon debut in 2012 and brings the curtain down on his career after 133 appearances in the primrose and blue. The Boyle man captained Roscommon in 2022 and scored an impressive 8-273 over the course of his intercounty career. 'On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to thank Donie for his dedication and commitment to the Roscommon jersey over the past 13 years,' said Roscommon GAA chairman Brian Carroll. Smith also won four National League Division Two titles (2015, 2018, 2020, 2022) and one Division Three crown (2014). However, the highlights of his Roscommon days were the 2017 and 2019 Connacht final victories. He scored 0-2 when introduced off the bench as Roscommon beat Galway in 2017. Smith's last appearance for Roscommon was in their round-three group game in the All-Ireland series in June – a defeat to Cork at O'Moore Park, during which he scored a point.

Roscommon's Donie Smith announces retirement from senior inter-county football
Roscommon forward Donie Smith has announced his retirement from senior inter-county football. Smith made his Roscommon debut in 2012 and went on to win two Connacht Senior Football Championship medals in 2017 and 2019. He also won four Allianz Football League Division 2 crowns and one Division 3 title. Brian Carroll, chairperson of Roscommon GAA, honoured Smith's contribution to his county over the years. "On behalf of everyone in Roscommon GAA, I want to thank Donie for his dedication and commitment to the Roscommon jersey over the past 13 years," Carroll said. "He always wore the primrose and blue with great honesty and pride. Donie's scoring tally of 8-273 shows the consistent level of high performance that he gave while on the pitch."

Roscommon boss Davy Burke steps aside after three years at helm
Roscommon GAA have announced that boss Davy Burke has departed his role as Senior Football manager after three years at the helm. In an amicable parting of ways statement, Burke said that he had the 'unwavering support' of their County Chairperson while adding it was an 'honour of a lifetime'. Burke guided Roscommon to a third-place finish in Division One during his first year in charge but were relegated the following season His best Championship run with the county was last year when they shocked Tyrone to reach the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals and were then beaten by eventual champions Armagh. This season, Burke guided the county back to Division One but an underwhelming Championship campaign ultimately spelled the end of his tenure. "During my tenure I have had the privilege of working alongside a fantastic group of people in my backroom team. While there are too many to mention individually, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for your professionalism, dedication and loyalty to Roscommon Football," Burke said in his statement. "To the Roscommon players, it was an honour of a lifetime to be entrusted to manage you bunch of men for 3 years. I am very proud of the improvements we made, the work we put in together and the experiences we had along the way. I will be on the terrace in The Hyde keenly watching on and wishing you continued success. There is no better sight than The Hyde pitch full with Rossie jerseys after a win." Roscommon Chairperson Brian Carroll added: "I want to thank Davy most sincerely for everything he has done for Roscommon GAA. We have had highs and lows over the 3 years but Davy's ambitions and goals for our players, supporters and our County was always to be the very best we could possibly be."

Roscommon town scores well in litter survey despite increased dumping at local wasteland
Recording its best performance 'in a number of years', seven surveyed sites in the county town recorded the highest possible ranking. These include Roscommon GAA's home grounds in King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park, Main Street and The Square. The N61, N63 Approach, N63 Galway Approach Road and the 'absolutely spotless' Aldi deposit return scheme also received Grade A rankings. The latest IBAL survey makes Roscommon town 'clean to European norms'. In their report, An Taisce surveyors said the laneway between Fire Station and Circle K was 'a much-improved area compared to a couple of years ago, with much of the large pieces of metal waste and old sofas removed'. 'The installation of a gate appears to be having the desired effect i.e. preventing access. Litter items this time around were much smaller in nature e.g. fast-food wrappers and plastic bags, along with a sort of metal canister,' they stated. Surveyors expressed concern about the level of dumping at the waste land adjacent to recycle facility, which received Grade D. Roscommon County Council have told An Taisce that the site is 'beyond their remit' and have attempted to contact the owner of the site. 'While this site has been highlighted in many previous IBAL surveys, the level of dumping appears to be increasing. All manner and vast quantities of materials have been dumped upon a vast expanse of wasteland,' the IBAL report on Roscommon town stated. Described as 'moderately littered' in an IBAL survey in June 2024, Roscommon town has risen from 27th place to 23rd out of 40 towns since the last IBAL survey was published in January. The results of the latest report have been welcomed by Roscommon Tidy Towns. In 2024, the town was awarded Ireland's Best Kept Large Town award in the all-island, Best Kept Town Competition.

Sunscreen dispensers installed in Roscommon GAA ground
Sunscreen dispensers have been donated to two GAA grounds in Co Roscommon to help raise awareness around skin cancer prevention. The initiative by Roscommon University Hospital, which is part of the Saolta Hospital Group, aims to encourage regular sunscreen use among players, particularly during the summer months when UV exposure is at its highest. "Approximately 1,290 people are diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer each year in Ireland," said Bernie Finneran, Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Skin Cancer at RUH. "It is very important that everyone uses a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen-SPF 30+ for adults and SPF 50+ for children that has a high UVA protection and is water resistant," she said. "Each dispenser includes a UV index display to provide real-time information about UV radiation levels. "In Ireland, the UV index is usually 3 or higher from April to September, even when it's cloudy and therefore daily sun protection is essential, regardless of the weather," she added. The sunscreen dispensers have been installed in the dressing rooms at both Roscommon Gaels' club ground and Dr Hyde Park, with the goal of making sun safety a routine part of outdoor sports and activity. "We in Roscommon GAA are delighted to assist in raising awareness of skin cancer prevention to coincide with Melanoma Awareness Month," said Brian Carroll, Chairperson, Roscommon GAA. "I would encourage all players in all our clubs to wear sunscreen at all times but especially during the summer months when UV is at its highest in our country," he added.
