The lure of a European cruise is obvious. The ease of travel, unpacking once, no crazy airports to endure, and the pure joy of arriving by sea into some of the most stunning destinations in the world: the list goes on.
One downside could be saying farewell to these gorgeous ports too soon, missing the chance to really explore, to wander the streets, taste more of the local food, or just to savour a coffee or a few glasses of wine while enjoying some serious people watching.
Or to linger long into the evening over a candlelit dinner at an alfresco restaurant as the daytripper crowds depart, before making your way back to your welcoming ship, perhaps to enjoy a cocktail on deck and the spectacular view of the harbour.
It's this memorable kind of travel experience that innovative cruise company, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), understands well and aims to deliver for its travellers. As well as offering itineraries that feature extended time in ports, more of its European cruises also include relaxing overnight stays in some of the most captivating destinations, including Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Istanbul.
"Whether cruising near or far, Australian travellers are increasingly seeking greater choice and more meaningful ways to explore the world, and that's exactly what NCL delivers," said Ben Angell, Vice President and Managing Director, NCL APAC.
"With our diverse fleet and immersive European itineraries featuring longer stays and overnight visits, guests enjoy the freedom to experience each destination on their own terms - whether it's lingering over a late dinner in a local piazza, discovering hidden neighbourhoods, or soaking up the vibrant energy of a city after dark. It's all part of our commitment to creating more flexible, enriching cruise experiences that leave lasting memories."

Named Europe's Leading Cruise Line 17 years in a row by the World Travel Awards, NCL will have eight of its spectacular ships sailing Europe next year, from its smaller ships for a more intimate cruise experience to its new Prima Class ship, Norwegian Viva, who will be sailing in the Mediterranean and Greek Isles from April including iconic ports across Malta, Italy, Greece and Montenegro, and an overnight in Istanbul.
More than 110 unique itineraries are available for fascinating seven to 14-day Mediterranean, Greek Isles and Northern Europe sailings, visiting more than 130 breathtaking ports. New to NCL's 2026 itineraries are Baltic cruises that, for the first time, will depart from Helsinki in Finland.
While all include an average of ten hours in ports, select cruises also feature the opportunity of overnight stays like these four spectacular journeys:
Baltic: Germany, Sweden & Poland
Set sail on an unforgettable nine-day journey across the Baltic Sea, starting in Helsinki and ending with an overnight in Copenhagen. Throughout the voyage, Northern Europe's rich history, culture, and beauty will be revealed. In Tallinn, Estonia, explore the medieval streets of the Old Town.
Enjoy the charm of Nynashamn, Sweden, or immerse yourself in Stockholm's royal history at the Royal Palace. From Gdynia, in Poland, explore the Oliwa Cathedral or the charming city of Gdansk. Finally, sail into Copenhagen where a stroll on the Nyhavn waterfront beckons. Sailing 26 July 2026.
Northern Europe: Iceland, Scotland & Norway
Depart from Southampton in the UK on this 11-day adventure toward the land of fire and ice, Iceland. Experience the raw beauty of the Atlantic on this trip, culminating in Reykjavik. From the port of Newhaven, tour Edinburgh's historic castles and cobblestone streets. Hunt for Nessie in Invergordon.
Sail to Alesund and hike to the top of Mount Aksla for breathtaking fjord views. Hop on a boat in Isafjordur to visit the remote village of Hesteyri, amidst snow-dusted mountains and secluded coves, and finally overnight in Reykjavik. Sailing 10 May, 21 June 2026.

Those who've sailed with NCL will be aware of the personalised level of service and amenities the cruise line delivers on its ships - it's a class above. After exciting, happy days spent ashore, being welcomed back to your home at sea is a delight.
Relax and catch your breath, meeting up with friends in one of the many bars, putting your feet up with a cold glass of bubbles or a cocktail on the balcony of your comfortable and spacious stateroom, or pampering yourself in the spa, before heading to dinner and a quality show.
NCL's award-winning fleet offers a sumptuous selection of world-class dining, with more choices than days at sea. Enjoy a three-course meal with a glass of wine from an extensive and globally-sourced wine list, or grab a burger hot off the grill. Go light and casual or head to one of the upscale restaurants like signature Italian restaurant Onda by Scarpetta or the French elegance of Le Bistro.
