Welsh golfer Harry eyes home Women's Open spot

Welsh golfer Darcey Harry starts life on the Ladies European Tour (LET) this week with the goal of qualifying for this summer's home AIG Women's Open. Harry begins her first LET event in Morocco on Thursday having come through qualifying school to earn a place on the tour. The 21-year-old already has her eyes on securing a place at the Women's Open - the first major staged in Wales - which will be played at her home club, Royal Porthcawl, in late July and early August. "The AIG Women's Open is the dream," Harry said. "It is on my home course so I do not think I would be able to watch if I am not playing in it because I would be so, so disappointed. That is my main goal for the year. "If it does not happen then it is not meant to be, but it would be great for Wales to have home players in the event." Harry, from Dinas Powys, is one of 52 rookies on the LET this year and will aim to make a positive impression in this week's Lalla Meryem Cup. She returns to Morocco with fond memories, having finished second in the final qualifying school event held there in December to seal her LET spot. "I missed a 9ft putt on the last to tie for the lead so you always look back and think you could have done better, but the most important thing was to get through and it was nice to get my first pay cheque," the Wales international said. "Finishing second means I get into most events on the Ladies European Tour. I had national coach Paul Williams on the bag in final qualifying and that really, really, really helped me. I learned a lot about myself and my game." Harry's progress means she will be third Welsh golfer playing regularly on the LET this year, alongside Chloe Williams from Wrexham and Bridgend's Lydia Hall. "I think I have to go out and enjoy it, not get stressed, keep the same mindset that I had at Tour School - enjoy going to different countries and appreciate what the LET can do for you," Harry said.
