Religious institutions owe Rs1.32cr property tax arrears to civic body
Nagpur: Religious institutions — including temples, mosques, churches, and gurdwaras — owe a staggering Rs1.32 crore in property tax arrears to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to recently released civic data, the arrears pertain to 990 properties registered with the charity commissioner that fall under the religious category. For the financial year 2025–26, these religious bodies face a current demand of Rs90.37 lakh. However, it is the piled-up arrears that highlight the growing financial non-compliance among some of the city's religious establishments. Topping the list is the Nehru Nagar zone, where 138 religious properties owe over Rs30.74 lakh to the NMC. Hanuman Nagar comes next with Rs12.91 lakh pending from 99 properties, followed by Mangalwari zone where 118 religious properties owe Rs16.72 lakh in arrears. In contrast, Laxmi Nagar has emerged as the most compliant zone, with just Rs2.45 lakh outstanding from 59 properties. Dharampeth (Rs9.66 lakh) and Lakadganj (Rs7.56 lakh), too, feature on the lower end of the arrears table. Many devotees have expressed concern over the financial mismanagement by religious trusts. "It's disheartening to see such institutions neglect their civic duties. These are places where we go to seek blessings — why should they be exempt from responsibilities?" asked Nilesh Patil, a regular visitor at a temple in Nehru Nagar. A devotee, who frequents a mosque, echoed a similar sentiment. "We donate thinking the money goes to maintenance or charity. If the trusts aren't paying basic taxes, where is the transparency?" While the NMC has not released a breakdown by religious denomination, officials confirmed the defaulters span across all faiths. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With overall property tax arrears in the city touching Rs938 crore, the civic body's decision to include religious institutions in its recovery net signals a broader crackdown on all defaulters.
