City Proposes Rs510 Crore Mobility Overhaul With 8 Flyovers, 3 ROBs To Ease Traffic Woes

1 2 Nagpur: To decongest major junctions and streamline city traffic, the newly proposed Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) outlines the construction of eight grade separators and three Rail Over/Under Bridges (ROBs/RUBs) across Nagpur. The Rs510 crore draft plan, prepared by MahaMetro in collaboration with RITES, is still in the proposal stage and open to feedback from all stakeholders. The project focuses on addressing key traffic choke points and eliminating delays caused by level crossings. Grade separators, which include flyovers and underpasses, form the core of the strategy and are planned in three phases. Two flyovers estimated at Rs90 crore will be taken up in the first phase. The remaining six, split evenly between phase 2 and phase 3, are projected to cost Rs135 crore each, bringing the total flyover investment to Rs360 crore. Proposed flyover locations include high-traffic zones such as RBI Chowk, Manewada Chowk, Ajni Square, Koradi Naka, Kamptee, Medical Chowk, Tathagat Chowk, and New Katol Naka. To ease congestion at railway level crossings, three ROBs/RUBs have also been proposed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dermatologista recomenda: simples truque elimina o fungo facilmente Acabe com o Fungo Undo These will be developed in later stages of the CMP — two in phase 2 with an estimated cost of Rs100 crore and one in phase 3 costing Rs50 crore. The ROBs are designed as 4-lane carriageways with a 30-meter railway span and a vertical clearance of 6.5 meters, aiming to meet long-term capacity demands. Officials emphasised that the CMP is not a finalised blueprint but a dynamic framework built on present infrastructure assessments and future urban growth projections. Input is being actively encouraged before any implementation decisions are made. Last month, a meeting was held at the divisional commissionerate with all key stakeholders, including MahaMetro, NMC, NIT, the traffic department, and others, to discuss the CMP. This was the second such meeting on the CMP. Officials stated that a final round of discussions will be held soon, after which the plan will be submitted to the state govt for approval prior to implementation. "The CMP is a vision document. It looks at both present needs and long-term requirements. We want experts and stakeholders to weigh in before anything is finalised," said a senior official involved in the project. The plan also complements other long-term strategies, such as strengthening public transport, improving pedestrian infrastructure, and enhancing last-mile connectivity. While the current Rs510 crore proposal prioritises high-impact traffic zones, further infrastructure upgrades could be incorporated based on feedback and funding. Once finalised and approved, the CMP will serve as a key roadmap for urban mobility development in Nagpur over the next decade. For now, the focus remains on consultation, refinement, and building consensus around the city's transport future.

Price hike intensifies ahead of Eidul Azha

Stalls are bereft of customers following calls on social media for a strike against fruit vendors to protest against the price hike. PHOTO: ZAFAR ASLAM/Express With the failure of the price control and market committees, inflation in Rawalpindi continues to soar, further aggravated by the upcoming Eidul Azha. The prices of essential food and household items have seen sharp increases. Flour is being sold at Rs170 per kg, sugar at Rs185 per kg, and cooking oil and ghee at Rs510–520 per packet. Pulses have also surged, with black gram at Rs600 per kg and split chickpeas at Rs360. White chickpeas are priced at Rs400 per kg. In the meat and poultry category, live chicken is selling for Rs425 per kg, chicken meat at Rs625, mutton at Rs2,400, beef at Rs1,400, eggs at Rs250 per dozen, milk at Rs220 per litre, and yogurt at Rs240 per kg. Vegetables and fruits are also becoming increasingly unaffordable. Potatoes are priced at Rs80 per kg, onions at Rs90, tomatoes at Rs100, and peas at Rs200. Despite the rising cost of living, local authorities have yet to take effective action to bring prices under control.

Magistrates fail to rein in runaway prices

The district's 60 price control magistrates appear ineffective in curbing inflation, as the prices of essential items continue to rise amid shortages in sugar and cooking oil supplies. Current market rates show live chicken selling at Rs415/kg, chicken meat at Rs610/kg, eggs at Rs277/dozen, mutton at Rs2,400/kg, and beef at Rs1,400/kg. Sugar is priced at Rs185/kg, while ghee and cooking oil range from Rs510–515 per pack. Pulses and dairy prices have also surged. Chickpeas at Rs380/kg, mash at Rs550/kg, milk at Rs220/litre, and yogurt at Rs240/kg. Fruit and vegetable prices remain high, with bananas selling for Rs200–250/dozen, mangoes and guavas at Rs200–250/kg, and cherries at Rs500/kg. Among vegetables, potatoes are Rs60/kg, onions Rs70/kg, garlic Rs350/kg, and ginger Rs650/kg. Prices may ease slightly starting Monday, May 12, as wholesale markets reopen. The Federal Minister for Planning, Ahsan Iqbal has directed relevant departments to ensure that sudden price spikes are not reported before Eidul Azha and the essential commodities remain reasonably priced. However, his directives seem to have had little impact. The federal minister was chairing a meeting on Wednesday to review the current price trends of essential commodities across the country. Iqbal directed relevant departments to ensure five essential commodities, namely sugar, ghee, potato, onion, and tomato, are reasonably priced.

Chicken prices soar in twin cities

The price of chicken in the open market has skyrocketed to an all-time high in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with rates breaking previous records. Despite efforts to control prices, the cost continues to climb. On Wednesday, live chicken was being sold at Rs19,000 per 40 kg in wholesale markets, compared to Rs12,000-14,000 before Ramazan. Since the start of the holy month, the price has been increasing by Rs1,000 per 40 kg daily, with no sign of stabilisation. In retail markets, live chicken is being sold at Rs510 per kg in urban areas and Rs520 per kg in suburban areas, while chicken meat has surged to Rs880 per kg. According to Retail Chicken Sellers' Union Vice President Faisal Abbasi, demand for chicken has risen by 40 per cent since the beginning of Ramazan. "As long as demand outpaces supply, prices will continue to rise," he explained. With no immediate relief in sight, consumers are bracing for further increases in poultry prices in the coming days.
