Price hike intensifies ahead of Eidul Azha
With the failure of the price control and market committees, inflation in Rawalpindi continues to soar, further aggravated by the upcoming Eidul Azha.
The prices of essential food and household items have seen sharp increases. Flour is being sold at Rs170 per kg, sugar at Rs185 per kg, and cooking oil and ghee at Rs510520 per packet.
Pulses have also surged, with black gram at Rs600 per kg and split chickpeas at Rs360.
White chickpeas are priced at Rs400 per kg.
In the meat and poultry category, live chicken is selling for Rs425 per kg, chicken meat at Rs625, mutton at Rs2,400, beef at Rs1,400, eggs at Rs250 per dozen, milk at Rs220 per litre, and yogurt at Rs240 per kg.
Vegetables and fruits are also becoming increasingly unaffordable. Potatoes are priced at Rs80 per kg, onions at Rs90, tomatoes at Rs100, and peas at Rs200.
Despite the rising cost of living, local authorities have yet to take effective action to bring prices under control.

Meetup highlights AI's role in software development
The Cursor team demonstrates its platform's features and answers the audience's questions at their first ever meetup in Pakistan held at the National Incubation Centre in Islamabad. PHOTO: ZUNAIRAH QURESHI/EXPRESS The Karachi community of Cursor AI — a platform designed to enhance the productivity of software and application developers through artificial intelligence — held a meetup on Sunday, drawing strong participation from young developers, IT professionals, and students both online and in person. The event focused on the latest features of Cursor AI, with developers sharing their experiences and exploring how the tool is transforming coding practices. Speaking to The Express Tribune, Yahya Qureshi, Cursor AI's ambassador in Pakistan, said the platform makes software development faster and more efficient. "Cursor is an AI tool that not only answers programming-related queries but can also generate new features. It simplifies coding while saving time," he explained. Qureshi noted that Cursor's growing community in Pakistan is being supported through free mentorship and guidance offered via WhatsApp groups. Highlighting its potential for the country's software industry, he said AI-assisted coding is helping accelerate research, streamline debugging, and enhance software trials. "Its popularity lies in its open-market policy," he added. During the session, Google Developer Expert for Android, Wajahat Karim, advised younger developers to first strengthen their foundational coding skills. "AI tools like Cursor are valuable, but they should be used by developers with at least five years of experience. Newcomers must not skip understanding code — AI should complement skills, not replace them," he cautioned. Juan Batista, a special guest from Anysphere, also joined the meetup via Zoom, responding to participants' queries about AI-powered development.

Traders defy new official prices
The Rawalpindi district administration and the Kiryana Merchants Association have clashed over newly fixed official prices for pulses, rice, and other essential commodities. Multiple trader associations, including grocers, mutton and beef sellers, naanbais, and milkmen, have rejected the deputy commissioner's unilateral price notification, calling it "unrealistic" and announcing a protest. Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema issued the new price list and ordered shops to display it prominently. However, traders say these rates are far below open market prices — for example, milk is officially priced at Rs170 per kg compared to Rs220 in the market; mutton at Rs1,600 per kg versus Rs2,400; and beef at Rs800 per kg versus Rs1,400. Pulses and rice show similar gaps of Rs50 to Rs140 per kg. Trader leaders, including Kiryana Merchants Association divisional president Saleem Pervaiz Butt and others, said the DC had earlier agreed on higher rates during a meeting but later reduced them unilaterally. They demanded an urgent meeting of the price control committee to fix rates in line with market conditions, warning that no goods would be sold at the official prices. They plan to hold a divisional traders' convention and press conference within two days to announce a protest strategy. Meanwhile, the DC has ordered price magistrates to enforce the new list strictly, seal shops, impose heavy fines, and register cases against violators.
