None from govt paid visit to grieving family of contractor who committed suicide, says NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil

Kolhapur: After visiting the family of contractor Harshal Patil, who committed suicide a week ago at Tandulwadi village in Sangli district, senior NCP(SP) leader Jayant Patil said no govt representative or official has visited the grieving family yet. Patil (35), was a civil engineer and a contractor, who used to get work from registered contractors to carry out Jal Jeevan Mission's water supply projects. Both his relatives as well as the contractors' association have claimed that he committed suicide as the govt failed to clear bills worth Rs 1.40 crore. He also had a personal debt of Rs65 lakh. The association claimed that the govt has pending bills of Rs 89,000 crore for works of various govt departments. The state govt has denied any role in Patil's suicide, stating that he was not a registered contractor and therefore had no dues pending for works, he did. "Harshal was a promising young man from a farming family. He placed his trust in the govt and the contractors above him, but the government failed to clear his pending bills, which led him into a financial crisis. Ultimately, out of desperation, he took his own life," said Jayant Patil, who visited the family of Harshal Patil on Monday night accompanied by Shashikant Shinde, the recently appointed new state chief of NCP(SP). Patil claimed that the government has withheld payments worth Rs 89,000 crore to 5 lakh contractors. "Before the elections, the government made false promises and inaugurated projects, but now it lacks the funds to pay. This is affecting every section of society in the state. I repeatedly advised contractors not to take up work based on trust in this government and to do as much work as the government pays for and not undertake projects in advance relying on the government's promises," said Patil. He expressed concern that just as the series of farmer suicides has not stopped, a similar situation should not arise for contractors. "A week has passed since Harshal's death, and no one from the government has visited his family. Forget providing assistance, not a single government official has inquired about the family's well-being. Instead, the government is shirking responsibility by claiming Harshal was not a direct government contractor. If the government had paid the original contractors' bills, this tragedy with Harshal could have been avoided," added Patil.

Separate Lakshadweep jetty project approved 3 years ago at standstill

Mangaluru: A dedicated 'Lakshadweep Jetty' project at Mangaluru's Old Port received central approval three years ago but has since made no visible progress. Announced under the Sagarmala 1 programme in 2022, the Rs65 crore first-phase funding was released in July that year. The tender was floated and contracts awarded by March 2023; yet construction has not commenced due to missing environmental and state-level clearances. Lok Sabha MP Brijesh Chowta raised the issue during a parliamentary session, drawing the attention of Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. He blamed the state government's delay in processing necessary approvals including from the Environment Department, which has held up the project despite central readiness. Once complete, the jetty is expected to boost maritime cargo handling and passenger connectivity between Mangaluru and Lakshadweep islands, supporting strategic logistics and tourism growth. In 2022, project cost estimates ranged around Rs350 crore overall, with the first Rs65 crore tranche already released. The project's delay has drawn criticism from both state representatives and maritime industry stakeholders. Officials insist that approvals must be expedited immediately to align with the national government's maritime strategy. Meanwhile, port authorities await explicit directives before initiating groundwork

Man torches himself outside DPO office

A man set himself on fire outside the District Police Officer (DPO) office after being repeatedly denied a hearing by police officials. The man, identified as Arshad Sandhu, suffered serious burns and was shifted to Nishtar Hospital Multan in critical condition. The family claimed that police have restricted all access to him, allowing no visitors. According to details, Arshad had been visiting the DPO office for several days to file a complaint against two local men, Ramzan and Ali Dar, alleging that they had made him work but failed to pay his wages of Rs65,000. Despite multiple attempts, office staff allegedly refused to present him before DPO Muhammad Ismail Kharrak and kept turning him away. On the day of the incident, Arshad arrived with his wife and two children in another attempt to seek justice. When officials again denied him access to the DPO, he reportedly became frustrated and doused himself with petrol at the office gate before setting himself on fire. He was rushed to District Headquarters Hospital Khanewal and later transferred to Nishtar Hospital Multan due to the severity of his burns. Hospital sources say a significant portion of his body was burned, and he is being treated in the intensive care unit.
