Paton cherishing each moment at Dundee United despite lack of minutes

Ruari Paton is cherishing every moment of his loan stint at Dundee United, even though it has not given him the game time and goals he would have liked so far. The 24-year-old forward has made just four starts and is yet to score since joining the Tannadice club on a temporary deal from Port Vale in January. Paton is able to place his current situation into a positive context, however, when he recalls that he dropped into the non-league ranks after being released by Hibernian as a teenager and was playing in the Scottish Championship with Queen's Park last season. 'You want to play every minute, but sometimes that's not how it works,' said the striker. 'I think especially for me, the past year, obviously I've went from there, I've went up levels through the lower leagues and then I've taken a jump again and then a jump here. 'You have to understand you're at a different level. It's not a disrespect to the levels I've been at, it's just that you are at a different level. I think maybe that time of getting used to it has really done me well.' Paton is heartened by the fact he has not felt out of his depth after taking what he feels has been 'an astronomical jump' to get to the Scottish Premiership, where he could feature against champions-in-waiting Celtic on Saturday. 'I was maybe thinking, I hope I don't get in and I'm like, 'Jesus Christ, I'm absolutely rubbish', but I've found it OK,' he said. 'I just think with a bit more time, I'd be really able to show my quality. 'That's not arrogant, I'm not delusional in any way, I know I can do the business here. I think that adjustment period has been good for me, but I have enjoyed it. 'Some of the dreams I had when I was a kid, of playing at this level, have come true for me. 'I've been in a spot where playing here now is like an absolute astronomical leap from where I was in terms of when I was released as a 19-year-old kid and had no options. 'To be able to sit here now, I'm talking to you, all these cameras in front of me, I was nowhere near being anywhere near this level. 'I've actually really, really enjoyed it. I think it's a great place, there's great people. I've enjoyed every day of training. Obviously, I would have liked to have scored early on. 'In terms of how I feel it's gone, I try not too much to look into that. I just try to enjoy every day, because things can be over quickly. 'Hopefully, the next couple of weeks when I'm up here now, it would be great to play some games, get a couple of goals and then get us into a good European spot. 'I think that would be the icing on the cake for me in terms of really enjoying a couple of months of football.' 'Don't resent football' - Paton hopes his journey can inspire young players

Dundee United striker Ruari Paton hopes the way he was rekindled his career can inspire young players cut loose by clubs to keep chasing their Paton, who arrived on loan from Port Vale in January, admits being part of United's European challenge is a far cry from where he was when he was released by Hibs as a prior to Saturday's Premiership visit of Celtic, he said: "You are 19, your life is just starting, even now I am 24 I feel like a completely different person that I was then. But did I feel like the bottom of my world had gone? Absolutely."I would love if even one younger person watched my interviews and my story and understood that through a couple of years of really hard graft and performing at certain levels and just scaling bigger and bigger, they can look at my story and think your career is not over just because you were released by a professional club. It is far from over."I would reinforce that to every young person I meet. Don't be resentful to football, because football isn't the problem."Don't get resentful towards the game, enjoy it and play it while you can, immerse yourself in it every day because it doesn't owe you anything."But it is absolutely brilliant to play in and there is no reason why you can't go back up the way again, especially in Scotland."After his Easter Road exit, Paton rebuilt his career at East Kilbride, Stranraer, Queen of the South and Queen's Park before making the move to has struggled for game time and has yet to score since he arrived at United but maintains he has "loved it".He said: "I knew fine well I was putting myself in a situation where I wasn't guaranteed to play every minute."It is not in my personality to be fearful or afraid of a jump or failing. I would be more than happy to come and fail, it doesn't bother me in the slightest, I have failed miles worse before."I have loved it. A lot of people fall out of love with football, they will come up here and tell you they love it, but they don't. A lot of footballers don't love football."I still do love it when I look around and think 'the stadium is full, it is amazing' you have to try to enjoy every moment as it comes."

'Fine margins cost us as slump continues'

It's fair to say we're in a bit of a slump at the moment - just one win in four, with nothing to show from games against Hearts and the Old were out on our feet against the Jambos, but showed fight at Parkhead then, on Sunday, were the architects of our own could have been two or three up before Rangers equalised, but fine margins cost us. Their third goal summed it up - we lost possession high up the pitch and they punished us with a clinical slow starts have been a recurring issue this season, but Jim Goodwin flipped the script on Sunday. We came out firing in a bold 4-4-2, with new man Ruari Paton joining the best in Scotland, Sam Dalby, up opener was a surprise, considering United had managed just one first-half goal in the previous 11 matches, and things could have got even better. Dalby hit the post and Luca Stephenson forced a fantastic save from when Mohamed Diomande equalised it felt like a hammer blow. The surprises continued as he stayed on his feet long enough to score, considering how much time he spent rolling about on the Tannadice match had everything - goals, saves, the woodwork rattled and a red card - but Robin Propper's goal was the turning frustrate Goodwin no end. Ryan Strain left Propper unmarked to help close down Ianis Hagi and the strike took a wicked deflection off Kevin Holt. It's never just a deflection, is it? It has to be elsewhere went in our favour, but we couldn't take advantage. Now all eyes are on Kilmarnock this weekend. We have to come back up the road with three points. Anything less, and that gap to the chasing pack could start to feel a little too close for Costello can be found at The Dode Fox Podcast, external
