‘A no-brainer': Rubén Sellés takes reins at Sheffield United after Wilder exit
Sheffield United have appointed Rubén Sellés as their new manager after Chris Wilder expressed 'great regret' over his departure from Bramall Lane. Sellés was swiftly named as Wilder's successor on Wednesday evening with the Spaniard signing a three-year deal at the Championship club. The 42-year-old former Southampton, Reading and Hull manager said: 'When we first heard about the possibility of coming here, it was a no-brainer for us to join a club with this kind of history and with a mission to move forward and try to be even more competitive. This is a very powerful and ambitious project. It was very important at the start of the conversations that everyone is on the same page. 'We need to embrace data and new technologies, but the most important thing is not to forget the football essence. I think we are capable of delivering a good model and optimise our performance by using all the tools that we have. Our identity is always very clear. We want to be aggressive, we want to make things happen. 'So, the fans can expect a team which is not going to wait or be reactive, we will be proactive, we are going to go and try and be as competitive as we can in every single game. If we can do that then we'll give ourselves a very good chance of winning games.' Wilder's departure had been expected following the club's end-of-season review into their failure to win promotion to the Premier League. Despite amassing 90 points, United finished third behind Leeds and Burnley and were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland in the playoff final at Wembley after taking the lead. United described Wilder's departure as a 'mutually agreed decision'. The 57-year-old quickly released his own statement through the club's media platforms, saying he was 'obviously disappointed' to be leaving Bramall Lane. Wilder said: 'It is with great regret that my time at Sheffield United has come to an end. I'd like to thank Stephen Bettis [the chief executive] and Prince Abdullah [the former owner] for bringing me back to the club and giving me the opportunity to rebuild the team and take this great club forward. 'To the fans, I'm obviously disappointed to be leaving, particularly because we were so close to getting back to the Premier League. I'm a Sheffielder through and through, I love this club and this city and that feeling will never change. I depart with some cherished memories and feel proud to be talked about in the same manner that special Sheffield United managers are remembered – leading this team over 300 times will remain an incredible part of my life. This is a heartfelt thank you for all your support.' Sheffield United line up Rubén Sellés to take over from Chris Wilder as manager
Sheffield United's American owners have risked upsetting their fanbase after deciding to sack Chris Wilder and replace him with Rubén Sellés. With confirmation of Wilder's departure expected shortly, United are believed to have entered advanced negotiations with Sellés, who was sacked by Hull last month. The Spaniard was left bitterly disappointed by that, having narrowly kept the East Yorkshire side in the Championship after his appointment last December. Wilder, too, is believed to be deeply upset by the decision of COH Sports, the consortium that owns United, to end his second spell in charge. He was contracted to 2028 and the delay in announcing his exit appears connected to negotiations regarding compensation. Despite starting the past season with a two-point deduction for financial irregularities, the Blades remained in strong contention for automatic promotion until almost the end before losing the playoff final 2-1 to Sunderland. Although much of the fanbase appeared in favour of retaining the 57-year-old, who led the Blades from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons during his first stint, Wilder is understood to have disagreed with the owners' enthusiasm for a heavily data-driven player recruitment system. COH Sports took over last December after buying out Prince Abdullah and, by the end of January, were so impressed with Wilder they offered him a three year contract extension. Sellés had brief spells in charge of Southampton and Reading after starting his coaching career in charge of Valencia University's first XI. Despite an ostensibly patchy managerial record, he has won plenty of admirers since arriving in England and is noted as a skilled developer of young players.

Hull sack head coach Rubén Sellés despite avoiding drop
Hull have sacked their head coach, Rubén Sellés, after less than six months in charge. The club escaped Championship relegation on the final day of the season on goal difference having been bottom when Sellés was appointed in December. The 41-year-old Spaniard is the third manager sacked by the Hull owner, Acun Ilicali, in the past 12 months and the club now begin their search for a fifth permanent boss since the Turkish media executive took control in early 2022. Hull said in a statement: 'Following a thorough review of football operations after a challenging campaign, the club feels a change in leadership is necessary to move the team forward in line with our ambitions.' Hull went into the final day of the season in the bottom three and a 1-1 draw at Portsmouth was enough to save them, while Sellés won nine of his 27 league games in charge. Walter had been appointed as successor to Liam Rosenior, who was sacked in May 2024 after guiding Hull to a seventh-placed finish, missing out on the playoffs by three points.
