SMP 2025 celebrates unity, ethnic diversity in Malaysia
SMP serves as a platform for interaction and integration, fostering the spirit of unity while broadening knowledge about the diverse customs, cultures, and traditions of Malaysian society. BATU KAWAN (July 26): The Rumah KAMI (Ethnic) Exhibition, the Kadazan Dusun Ethnic Village Exhibition, and the Orang Asli Village were among the main attractions for visitors during the Sambutan Minggu Perpaduan (SMP) or National Unity Week Celebration. There were more than 40 main activities during the celebration from July 17 to 20. Among them were also Foodunites, Timeline Exhibitions, 'Malaysia My Homeland' Exhibition, Traditional Sports, Unity Entrepreneurs Sales, Boria Competitions, Ethnic Costume Competitions, Ethnic Dance Competitions, Book Festivals, and Cultural Performances. The event was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on July 19, 2025. This year, the theme 'Harmony in Diversity' was introduced to enhance harmony among people of different faiths in the country. This theme also reflects the reality of Malaysia's diverse society, emphasizing the values of understanding, respect, and acceptance towards achieving national harmony. The celebration served as a platform for interaction and integration, fostering the spirit of unity while broadening knowledge about the diverse customs, cultures, and traditions of Malaysian society. More than 200,000 visitors from various backgrounds, races, and cultures attended the event, proving that SMP is an excellent platform for uniting Malaysians. To engage and strengthen relationships with grassroots communities, the SMP Roadshow Series was also conducted in every state. Seven states including Melaka, Kedah, Kelantan, Sabah, Johor, Perlis, and Terengganu have completed their SMP celebrations, with the remaining eight states to follow. National Unity Minister, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, said his ministry is drafting a new approach to strengthen the implementation of SMP. He said starting next year, SMP will be combined with cultural celebrations of the ethnic minority groups in each state. 'This new approach recognizes the heritage of minority ethnic groups and provides an opportunity for the people to appreciate the cultural diversity that shapes Malaysia's identity,' he said at the launch of SMP 2025. The launching ceremony also witnessed the presentation of grants to selected Rukun Tetangga (KRT) areas, encouraging them to implement progressive, inclusive, and high-impact economic programmes. Additionally, Anwar presented scholarships to three selected recipients under the Tunku Abdul Rahman Foundation (YTAR) as a symbol of the government's commitment to empowering the education of the younger generation. The Ministry of National Unity is committed to strengthening the spirit of unity, patriotism, togetherness, goodwill, and volunteerism among Malaysians. This effort aligns with the aspirations of the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara, guided by the three main pillars of the National Unity Policy. Meanwhile, Aaron stated that the National Unity Index (IPNas) is currently being conducted for the third time and is expected to record a score of 0.7, reflecting the level of unity among Malaysians. 'This index evaluates key aspects such as inter-ethnic relations, perceptions of national identity, and social trust, serving as a primary reference for formulating ministry policies and initiatives to strengthen national unity. 'Since 2023, various initiatives have been implemented, clearly demonstrating that nation-building is the ultimate goal in strengthening national unity. 'Nation-building is now also recognized as one of the main pillars in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). The event, which began on Thursday, has drawn over 250,000 visitors from diverse backgrounds. The final day kicks off at 6.30am with Zumba and traditional dance fitness sessions. Morning highlights include the Larian Kembara Ilmu and Fun Unity Run, followed by a multicultural traditional costume showcase at 9am. Children can enjoy the 'Didi & Friends' musical show at noon and 2pm, featuring meet-and-greet sessions with animated characters. Arts and culture enthusiasts can catch the open boria competition at the main stage from 4pm. Other attractions include spice identification contests, classic costume showcases, and entrepreneurship talks. Visitors can also explore Rumah KAMI exhibitions, ethnic village displays, traditional games, and Foodunites stalls. Public services such as traffic summons discounts from PDRM and JPJ, as well as reduced compound fines from MBPP and MBSP, are available during the event. After four vibrant days, the final day of the event continues to offer an exciting array of activities beginning as early as 6.30 am with Zumba and traditional dance-based fitness sessions. The morning line-up includes Larian Kembara Ilmu and Fun Unity Run, followed by a multicultural traditional costume showcase at the main stage starting at 9 am. For younger visitors, the popular 'Didi & Friends' musical show will be held in two sessions at noon and 2 pm, where children will also get to meet and greet their favourite animated characters. Fans of arts and culture can head to the main stage from 4 pm to enjoy the open boria (traditional musical theatre) competition. There are also a variety of engaging activities lined up at the mini stages dedicated to foodunites, entrepreneurship, Rumah KAMI (ethnic houses), and exhibition booths. Activities include a spice identification contest, classic costume showcases, and entrepreneurship talks. Visitors will also get to witness demonstrations of traditional ethnic attire and performances, offering deeper insights into Malaysia's rich cultural diversity. Members of the public still have the opportunity to join in the celebration of this third national-level edition of SMP, which follows previous editions in Kuching (2023) and Johor (2024), before it officially concludes at 6 pm today. Held under the theme "Harmony in Diversity", SMP 2025 features over 40 key programmes including 22 Rumah KAMI exhibitions, ethnic village displays representing Kadazan Dusun and Orang Asli communities, cultural showcases, traditional games, Foodunites stalls, the Malaysia Tanah Airku exhibition, and Unity Entrepreneurs' Market. National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang presented certificates of appreciation to the 27 strategic partners in recognition of their support and commitment in promoting and enlivening this year's edition of SMP. Bernama's Penang bureau chief R. Ratcharathan accepted the certificate on behalf of the agency during the Strategic Partner Appreciation certificate presentation session held at the Batu Kawan Stadium grounds here. According to the Ministry of National Unity (KPN), various forms of collaboration and support were provided by the strategic partners, including the display of programme posters at their premises, on highways, billboards and social media, as well as offering ticket discounts to tourist hotspots, lucky draw prizes, public transport facilities and fare discounts. KPN said the appreciation ceremony represented another proactive step by the ministry to promote unity values by recognising strategic partners from various sectors, including private companies, government agencies, non-governmental organisations and business operators.
