Mount Edgecombe resident completes Amashova on ElliptiGO
MOUNT Edgecombe resident Gords Reid has completed several Amashova Durban Classic races on various modes of bike, and on Sunday he completed the 65km race on an ElliptiGO.
He has cycled the iconic race on an ice cream bike, MTB bike, in a cow suit, on a BMX, on a handcycle, as well as on a tandem bicycle with his daughters Amy and Erin.
Reid completed the race in what marks a busy period for the local resident, who describes himself as an 'average athlete doing extraordinary things'.

'It was easier than running but tougher than cycling, having said that it was a beautiful sunny day after two years of battling heavy rain at the Amashova. This is just an iconic race and to be able to complete it on an ElliptiGO was awesome. I think using this has impacted my fitness and it's been kind to my body after running the Comrades last month. For me it was just about finishing, injecting humour into the ride and uplifting other riders,' he said.
The 52-year-old said he is already thinking about next year's event and what unique mode of transport to use.
'I've pretty much cycled everything I could but there are two other options. What I hope to complete the race on in the future is a unicycle and then in the future pipeline a Penny-farthing,' he said.
He now turns his attention to this weekend's Run For Rangers 100km challenge at the Babanango Game Reserve.
'The aim is to raise funds for Project Rhino and for the rangers who protect the wildlife and this is something that appealed to me. I'm also planning on doing this year's Rhino Peak Challenge, so the common theme this year is wildlife. I really believe we need to get involved to save our wildlife for future generations,' he said.
