Thousands of Edmonton's student safety patrollers celebrated at annual picnic
Students at the AMA School Safety Patrollers Appreciation Event at Edmonton's Rundle Park on June 6, 2025. (CTV News Edmonton) More than 3,000 local students took part in the annual AMA School Safety Patrollers Appreciation Event at Rundle Park on Friday. The event celebrates Grade 5 students who volunteer as AMA Safety Patrollers, helping other students cross the streets near schools safely. 'They are vital to traffic safety,' Const. Cassandra Grant of the Edmonton Police Service said. 'We really need them to do their job that they're doing every day. It helps us keep the streets safe and keeps all of their classmates safe as well.' 'If there's kids behind you, make sure you put your arm out so they won't go. And you need to make sure all cars stop by pushing the button before you can tell them to proceed,' patroller Aemilia Folgizan said of the job. 'You get to learn how to be a good leader.' The school patrol program has been operated by AMA since 1983. With files from CTV News Edmonton's Amanda Anderson
