MCH intern held for rape, forced abortions

Kolkata: A 24-year-old Calcutta Medical College student from Malda was arrested by Patuli Woman PS cops in connection with allegations of sexual assault and forcing multiple abortions on his girlfriend without her consent or knowledge. A formal complaint had been filed at the police station by a 27-year-old woman, who resides outside Kolkata and is not involved with the health sector. Cops have gathered medical reports and CCTV footage. According to cops, the case was registered under sections 69/89 of the BNS Act, pertaining to sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means and causing miscarriage without the woman's consent. If convicted, the accused intern can face 10 years in prison. "The woman alleged the accused, who was her boyfriend, engaged in sexual intercourse with her on multiple occasions, resulting in three pregnancies. She said he subsequently forced her to undergo abortions," said joint CP (crime) Rupesh Kumar. The duo reportedly met in 2022. The first abortion was carried out in 2022 and the other two in 2024. The accused allegedly facilitated the abortions by administering pills to the woman. An officer said the woman's statement was recorded under Section 183 of the BNSS. "We conducted primary and medico-legal examinations of the woman. Witnesses were examined and relevant documents seized," an officer said. The accused, a resident of the New Boys Hostel GTD, was sent to judicial custody. Cops are probing whether his medical knowledge was misused in the alleged forced abortions. "We are conducting a thorough investigation," another officer said. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Eid wishes , messages , and quotes !

Kolkata police get careful, put dogs through battery of 18 medical tests before induction into force

KOLKATA: In a bid to strengthen its K9 unit, Kolkata Police has launched a recruitment drive and has also announced a stringent medical testing protocol for potential canine sleuths. The new line of requirements, issued last week, specifies as many as 18 diagnostic and medical examinations that K9 candidates must clear before joining the force. For several years, KP has relied on extended service from retired canine cops and this year's drive is only the second in a decade. In 2023, Kolkata Police hired 12 dogs, following multiple requirements. Of these, 11 were bought and one — a Cocker Spaniel — was a gift from dog lovers. This year, KP aims to add 12 dogs from five breeds: Cocker Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever and Beagle. This is the first time a Cocker Spaniel may be bought for the force. The force seeks dogs aged between four and six months, with proper registration and microchip identification. The selection process, overseen by the KP canine squad's chief veterinary officer, requires the dogs to pass four primary medical assessment categories. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo These include complete blood count, detailed liver function and kidney function tests, and the canine rapid test for various infections, including canine coronavirus, parvovirus, brucellosis and leptospirosis. 6-month training for selected pups An officer at the police kennel explained that these assessments helped identify potential health concerns that could affect field performance. The protocol also includes X-rays of hip joints to verify proper skeletal development. Joint CP (Crime & Traffic) Rupesh Kumar confirmed that selected dogs will undergo six months of training, with provisions for replacement if health issues arise during this period. 'We must remember that we are buying some of the finest dogs and not a commodity. Each pup, therefore, must meet certain criteria before being accepted,' said a senior police officer. 'While each breed's physical abilities will differ, we want to ensure the healthiest make it to the force. With assembly elections due next year and the dogs' basic training lasting around 10-11 months, they will be on the field in very hot and humid conditions immediately after they join back from their training with ITBP or BSF at either Panchkula or Gwalior,' the officer added. 'We have 48 dogs in our kennel at the Alipore bodyguard lines, including those who have retired. As and when the newly inducted dogs complete their training and join the squad, the retired ones will leave the kennel,' said another officer. The department has also established requirements for transporting qualified dogs to the training centres in Gwalior or Panchkula. Vendors must possess valid GST registration, kennel registration and PAN documentation.

Fire at Obra thermal power in UP , 2 units closed

Lucknow: A fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday in two connected transformers at the Obra 'B' thermal power facility's switchyard in Sonbhadra district. Thick smoke filled the plant and power generation was disrupted when the transformers, linked to units 10 and 11 with a capacity of 200MW each, were shut down as a preventive step. Sources said "Two 315MVA (Megavolt-amperes) ICTs (Interconnecting Transformers) caught fire at 6.51am, following which as precautionary measures two power generation units were tripped, that further resulted in power outage in certain districts for couple of hours."The fire was immediately reported to the CISF fire brigade wing, which deployed three fire tenders to the site. The blaze was doused in 90 minutes and there was no casualty or even injury, sources said. Initial evaluations suggest that the facility incurred damages worth Rs 50 crore as a result of the fire, said DM Sonbhadra Badrinath Singh. ICTs are substantial power transformers used in major substations to link different voltage levels within the electrical grid. These devices are critical for maintaining grid stability and ensuring dependable power transfer across voltage levels. Rupesh Kumar, managing director of Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam and Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation, told TOI, "Both power generation unit were reinstated after the fire was doused. A departmental probe has been ordered to find the cause of fire."
