MIGHT, Universities Collaborate To Advance REE As Malaysia's Next Flagship Industry
KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) -- The collaboration between the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and two Public Higher Education Institutions in research and development (R&D), innovation, and commercialisation of Rare Earth Element (REE) marks a major step towards leading REE as Malaysia's flagship industry. MIGHT President and Chief Executive Officer Rushdi Abdul Rahim said the collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) was also a major step for Malaysia to establish technology sovereignty in the area with an interconnected ecosystem. 'The initiative also aims to shape national priorities on REE, including talent development and capability building, knowledge exchange, research expertise and technical resources to support mutual research, innovation, and capacity-building initiatives,' he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by MIGHT. The tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for strategic cooperation was signed today by Rushdi on behalf of MIGHT, while vice-chancellors Prof Dr Arham Abdullah and Prof Dr Yatimah Alias represented UMK and UMPSA, respectively. The three-year collaboration aims to boost national-level research initiatives and enhance academic curricula and training programmes in REE and advanced materials. These will focus on innovations with strong potential for intellectual property generation and future commercialisation. According to the statement, Malaysia possesses significant REE resources, estimated at 16.1 million metric tonnes of non-radioactive REEs (NR-REEs), valued at RM1 trillion, positioning the country among the leaders in the Southeast Asian region alongside Vietnam and Myanmar. It said by the year 2030, the expected downstream production of Malaysia's non-radioactive REEs is projected to generate RM13.59 billion in revenue, primarily from the manufacturing of super magnets and electric motors. In the same statement, Prof Yatimah noted that such projections raise concerns regarding sustainability, supply chain resilience, and environmental impact, thus calling for a more responsible path for REE industry development. 'Since 2013, UMPSA's Centre for Sustainability of Mineral and Resource Recovery Technology (SMAaRRT) has been developing capabilities across the full REE value chain, ranging from soil leaching, solvent extraction, impurity removal to pilot-scale technology validation.

Arab League Welcomes Iran-Israel Ceasefire, Calls for Gaza Truce
H-Tayea The Arab League has welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel, expressing hope that it will serve as a catalyst for ending the ongoing Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip. Ambassador Gamal Rushdi, spokesperson for the Arab League, told China's CGTN on Wednesday that the League supports the ceasefire, viewing it as a step toward de-escalating a dangerous phase of regional conflict. He also expressed solidarity with Qatar following the recent missile strike that targeted a U.S. military base on its territory. Rushdi emphasized that the recent meeting of Arab foreign ministers focused heavily on strategies to halt further escalation in the region and reiterated the League's longstanding call for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction. He stressed the need for a return to diplomatic negotiations as the sole path to resolving longstanding regional disputes. Addressing the impact of the Iran-Israel conflict on efforts to resolve the crisis in Gaza, Rushdi warned that the recent hostilities had distracted attention from the core issue — the Palestinian cause. 'The escalating tensions diverted global focus from the root of all Middle Eastern conflicts — the Palestinian question and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza,' he said, urging swift international action to address the dire situation in the besieged enclave. His remarks come as new ceasefire proposals concerning Gaza have been tabled, following the cessation of hostilities between Iran and Israel after 12 days of intense and unprecedented military confrontation. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean

President and chief executive officer Ts. Rushdi Abdul Rahim said aid MIGHT's enhanced role reflects a deeper focus on advancing national and regional synergy in key technology areas. MIGHT is spotlighting fast-growing industries such as advanced air mobility, aerospace, space technology, and shipbuilding and ship repair. Acting as a policy enabler, it provides technical advice to ministries and facilitates collaborations between local and international players. Key milestones include the formulation of the National Technology Policy, strategic aerospace frameworks, and flagship initiatives with partners from Türkiye, Indonesia, Qatar, and Japan.
