Five apprentice jockeys have been suspended for failing to pull up their mounts after a false start to a race at Windsor Racecourse in England on Aug. 18, reports Racing Post.A false start and recall was determined when a door to runner Beaumadier's stall opened incorrectly. Several stalls to the outside, a blindfolded runner was rearing in his stall and unseated jockey Ryan blindfolded runner, Master Zack, left the stall without his jockey and ran through three temporary rails while blindfolded. Master Zack was uninjured following the incident, reported Racing Post.
The remaining five runners completed the five-furlong turf sprint, ignoring the waving flag and whistle from the recall man indicating the false a result, the jockeys Jack Dace, Taryn Langley, Jack Doughty, Alec Voikhansky, and Tommie Jakes have been given 10-day suspensions, which they can appeal, according to steward Richard Westropp's post-race comments on Sky Sports Whiteley, rider of Beaumadier, was not suspended since he made efforts to pull up his mount. Kavanagh was not suspended since he did not complete the course, according to Racing Post.
Westropp said on Sky Sports Racing: 'What happened was the door on stall two [Beaumadier] flapped back as the start was activated, so on the basis of that, the starter called a false start. His flag was raised as it should be. The recall man stood right in the middle of the track, waved his flag, and blew his whistle. The procedures were followed to a T.'The apprentice handicap was declared to the British Horseracing Authority, an apprentice race is 'restricted to particular categories of jockeys who are not yet fully qualified' and 'can be further limited to jockeys who have not yet ridden a specified number of winners.'Read more at
