Orioles place 1B Ryan Mountcastle on the injured list with a hamstring strain
BALTMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles placed Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Saturday, a day after the first baseman left in the eighth inning of a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox with discomfort. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said Mountcastle had an MRI. 'Just hopeful that it's not too bad,' Mansolino said. Mountcastle, who is hitting .246 with two homers and 15 RBIs, is the second Orioles player in as many days to go on the injured list with a hamstring strain after Cedric Mullins did so Friday. Mountcastle is one of five players from Baltimore's opening day lineup who are currently on the injured list, joining Mullins, outfielders Colton Cowser and Tyler O'Neill, and infielder Jordan Westburg. Both Cowser and Westburg are currently on rehabilitation assignments at Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles recalled infielder Coby Mayo from Norfolk to take Mountcastle's roster spot. Mansolino said Mayo, who was in Baltimore's lineup Saturday as the designated hitter, could see time at first base. Baltimore also selected the contract of outfielder Jordyn Adams from Norfolk and designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment. ___ AP MLB:

Zach Eflin shines, Orioles hold off late White Sox rally
May 30 - Zach Eflin pitched seven shutout innings and the Baltimore Orioles pieced together a sixth-inning scoring rally to defeat the visiting Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Friday. Gunnar Henderson and Ryan Mountcastle both had two hits for the Orioles in the opener of a three-game series between teams with the two worst records in the American League. Eflin (4-2) allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out six. Bryan Baker pitched a scoreless eighth and Felix Bautista survived the ninth for his ninth save. Bautista allowed a run, and the White Sox had two runners on base when Joshua Palacios struck out to end the game. Sean Burke (3-6) took the loss, allowing two runs in six innings on five hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Until Mike Tauchman's one-out double in the ninth, all of Chicago's hits were singles -- and Lenyn Sosa had two of them. The White Sox had trouble on the base paths as Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman threw out Edgar Quero on a stolen base attempt and also was credited with a pick-off of Quero. Andrew Benintendi doubled in Tauchman with two outs in the ninth for Chicago's run. The Orioles, who've won four of their last six games, got going in the sixth when Rutschman singled and Gunnar Henderson doubled to put runners in scoring position with no outs. Mountcastle reached on an infield single without the runners advancing, and then Rutschman was thrown out at the plate on Ryan O'Hearn's fielder's choice grounder. Ramon Urias provided a sacrifice fly for the game's first run. The second run came on a double steal, with Mountcastle scoring from third base. It was Baltimore's first steal of home since August 2021. The White Sox went with Jared Shuster in the so-called opener role, working the first inning from the mound before Burke took over. Burke made through four innings unscathed until the Orioles got the two runs in the sixth. The game was moved up more than 2 1/2 hours to a late-afternoon start because of weather-related concerns in the evening. --Field Level Media

Eflin goes seven scoreless innings and Orioles beat White Sox 2-1
Zach Eflin allowed four hits over seven shutout innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Friday. Eflin (4-2) struck out six and walked one in his first scoreless outing this season while lowering his ERA nearly a run to 4.46. Ramón Urías broke a scoreless tie with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly off Sean Burke (3-6). Ryan Mountcastle then swiped home on a double steal, then left before the eighth inning with right hamstring discomfort. Bryan Baker worked a perfect eighth in a game originally scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. that was moved up to 4:30 p.m. because of expected inclement weather in the area, before Felix Bautista gave up Andrew Benintendi's RBI double in the ninth then stranded two for his ninth save. Burke worked six innings after opener Jared Shuster worked an inning plus a batter as the White Sox fell to .200 (6-24) on the road. Chicago's Miguel Vargas singled and Benintendi walked to put two on with one out in the seventh. Eflin escaped by striking out Luis Robert Jr. swinging and Joshua Palacios Jr. looking, the latter on a 3-2 cutter that home plate umpire D.J. Rayburn said caught the outer corner of the zone. Eflin got within six batters of completing his fourth career shutout and his first since 2020. His last nine-inning shutout helped Philadelphia win 7-0 win at Kansas City on May 11, 2019. Chicago right-hander Davis Martin (2-5, 3.45 ERA) will try to extend his streak of quality starts to four on Saturday after yielding only five combined runs in his last three outings (20 IP). He faces Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer (4-5-, 5.02), who is looking for consecutive wins after pitching 5 1/3 scoreless frames in a 5-1 victory at Boston last Sunday.
