Carolina Hurricanes NHL Draft guide: Picks, best fits and analysis

The Carolina Hurricanes have six picks in the 2025 NHL Draft: Nos. 29, 87, 125, 183, 189, 221. Here's what to expect. Carolina has drafted a lot of skilled wingers in recent years and has some good young defensemen, too. Ryan Suzuki was a promising center prospect at one point, but his development has gone sideways, and the Hurricanes just traded Jack Drury. It's not clear who in their system could realistically play the middle in the NHL. In recent mock drafts, Corey Pronman has projected the following picks: 29. Cullen Potter, C 87. Alex Huang, D 125. Adam Benak, C 183. Jayden Kraus, G 189. Edison Engle, D 221. Anders Miller, G (Photo of Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky: Bruce Bennett / Getty Images)

The Carolina Hurricanes' 2025 RFAs

The 2024-25 NHL season is quickly coming to a close. July 1, officially the first day of a new season, is fast approaching and that means that contracts will be ending too. There's two different kinds of statuses for players at the conclusion of a contract: unrestricted free agents (UFAs) and restricted free agents (RFAs). Advertisement UFAs are free to negotiate with any team once that July 1 date rolls in, but RFAs are restricted to the team that holds their rights. There's a little more nuance to it all, but that's pretty much the jist of it. The Carolina Hurricanes don't have any main roster RFAs this season, but there are a handful of prospects who are finishing out their ELCs or extensions. Here are a list of those players under team control who will either be in need of new deals or will be let go: Ryan Suzuki 24, C 12g, 59pts, 69gp (AHL) Last Contract: 1 year, $775,000 (Arbitration Eligible - QO $814,000) The 2019 first-round pick finally got to make his NHL debut this season, appearing in two games for the Canes. Suzuki was an AHL All-Star as well this season for the Chicago Wolves and managed another very successful season not marred by injuries. Chicago Wolves snap home winning streak as they lose to Hershey Bears

The Chicago Wolves on Sunday took on two-time defending Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears of Pennsylvania at the Allstate Arena on Sunday. Midway through the first period, the Wolves' Ryan Suzuki took a feed from Nikita Pavlychev and lit the lamp a one-timer from the slot. The score was 1-0 Wolves. By the start of the third period, the score was 4-1 Hershey — with Nick Leivermann having scored a goal in the first period, and Pierrick Dube, Grant Cruikshank, and Spencer Smallman also each scoring. The Wolves scored one more time. In the third, Aleksi Heimosalmi scored a power-play goal — teeing up a shot from the point and routing it past Hershey netminder Clay Stevenson's stick, a game recap noted. The last goal was Hershey's, as Matt Strome scored a goal toward the end of the game. The Wolves lost 5-2, snapping a six-game home winning streak.
