Soccer: Japan Men Look to Maintain High-Scoring Output

(©KYODO) The Japan men's national soccer squad began defense of its East Asian Football Federation E-1 Championship with a 6-1 thrashing of Hong Kong on Tuesday, July 8. Also competing in the tournament's four-nation final round, which was most recently held in 2022, are host South Korea and China. In Yongin, South Korea, Sanfrecce Hiroshima forward Ryo Germain led Japan with four first-half goals in the rout. Germain, a 30-year-old player for the Sanfrecce Hiroshima, made his first appearance with the national team a memorable one. He scored in the fourth, 10th, 22nd and 26th minutes. In doing so, he matched a Japan record for most goals by a debutant. Takeo Wakabayashi had four goals in his national team debut in May 1930. Before getting ready for Japan's next match, manager Hajime Moriyasu highlighted the key takeaways from the team's convincing win over Hong Kong. Germain, who was born in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, to American and Japanese parents, said there was solid synergy for the Samurai Blue on offense. "I feel that I fulfilled my role as a striker, but Taisei [Miyashiro] was instrumental in setting up plays with great interplay alongside [Yuki] Soma," Germain told reporters. "[Yuki] Kakita also worked tirelessly to disrupt the defenders. "It just so happened that I was the one who put the ball in the net, but the quality of the build-up plays around me really made the difference." Inoue (30-0, 27 knockouts) will put his four championship belts on the line against Uzbek challenger Murodjon Akhmadaliev (14-1, 11 KOs) on September 14 at Nagoya's IG Arena. "I think I will be fully prepared for the challenge," the 32-year-old Inoue said, according to Kyodo News. "I'm going to get a win." Hong Kong, China loses to Japan in East Asian Cup
YONGIN, South Korea, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Japan secured a 6-1 victory over Hong Kong, China in the 2025 EAFF E-1 Football Championship, also known as the East Asian Cup, here on Tuesday. The reigning champion opened the scoring just four minutes into the match when forward Ryo Germain found the net with a scissor kick volley. He scored four goals within 26 minutes, completing an impressive four-goal haul. In the 20th minute, Sho Inagaki added to Japan's tally with a powerful long-range strike. Hong Kong, China pulled one back in the 59th minute when Matt Orr headed home, marking the team's return to scoring at the East Asian Cup after 22 years. In stoppage time, Sota Nakamura scored Japan's sixth to complete the rout. The 2025 East Asian Cup is slated from July 7 to 16 in Suwon and Yongin of South Korea's Gyeonggi Province, featuring four men's teams: China, Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong, China. Hong Kong, China will face host South Korea in their next match on Friday.

Japan thrashes Hong Kong in EAFF E-1 Football Championship
Japan started its title defence at the EAFF E-1 Football Championship with a comprehensive 6-1 win against Hong Kong at the Yongin Mireu-Stadion in South Korea on Tuesday. Japanese striker Ryo Germain, who made his senior team debut, scored four goals in 22 minutes to hand his side command of the encounter. Hong Kong trailed 0-5 at the break with midfielder Sho Inagaki scoring the other goal. Japan were in complete control of the match in Yongin, South Korea, tallying five times against the SAR in less than half an hour. Ryo Germain was the star for his country, scoring four of those goals. The 30-year-old Sanfrecce Hiroshima forward broke the deadlock just three minutes in with a spectacular left-footed volley. He completed his hat-trick at the 22nd minute from a beautiful team play that came with a sequence of one-touch passes, before scoring his fourth four minutes later to make it 5-0. Sho Inagaki was the other goal-scorer for Japan. Hong Kong, China scored a consolation after the break thanks to Matt Orr. Japan completed the scoring in stoppage time with a goal by Sota Nakamura. Japan and South Korea each had a win after the opening round of matches, ahead of China and the SAR. Hong Kong, China next face hosts South Korea on Friday.

East Asian Football Championship: Hong Kong taught lesson by ruthless Japan
Battered and bruised Hong Kong suffered an embarrassing 6-1 loss to an inexperienced Japan side in their opening East Asian Football Championship finals match in Yongin on Tuesday. Ryo Germain, one of six Japanese starting debutants, helped himself to four quickfire goals as his side sprinted into a 5-0 lead after 26 minutes. Sandwiched between those, midfielder Sho Inagaki leathered in Japan's third goal from 25 yards. Slight solace for Hong Kong arrived in the shape of their first East Asian finals goal since 2003 when Matt Orr pounced from close range after 59 minutes.
