Negeri Sembilan activates haze and open burning response plan

SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan government has activated its state-level response plan under the National Haze Action Plan and National Open Burning Action Plan following directives from the Department of Environment (DOE). State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman S. Veerapan confirmed the move after the Air Pollutant Index (API) surpassed 150 for 24 consecutive hours. 'The state government will intensify patrols and enforcement against open burning activities, especially in high-risk agricultural and industrial areas. 'We will also assess the implementation of cloud seeding technology in collaboration with federal agencies should air pollution levels continue to rise,' he said in a statement. Veerapan urged residents to report open burning via the DOE complaint hotline and support sustainability efforts. According to the DOE's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), eight areas in Peninsular Malaysia recorded unhealthy API levels as of 6 pm. Alor Gajah in Melaka recorded the highest reading at 157, followed by Seremban (155), Kemaman (153), Banting (152), Temerloh (152), Balok Baru (152), Nilai (146), and Johan Setia (140). An API between 101 and 200 is considered unhealthy, posing risks to vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions. – Bernama

Negeri Sembilan Activates Haze And Open Burning Response Plan

SEREMBAN, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Negeri Sembilan government has activated its state-level response plan based on the National Haze Action Plan and National Open Burning Action Plan, in line with instructions from the Department of Environment (DOE). State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman S. Veerapan said the plan was activated after the Air Pollutant Index (API) level exceeded the 150 threshold for a continuous 24-hour period. 'The state government will intensify patrols and enforcement against open burning activities, especially in high-risk agricultural and industrial areas. 'We will also assess the implementation of cloud seeding technology in collaboration with federal agencies should air pollution levels continue to rise,' he said in a statement today. He also urged the people in Negeri Sembilan to play an active role by reporting open burning activities through the DOE complaint hotline and supporting the state's efforts towards a more sustainable future. According to DOE's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal, eight areas in Peninsular Malaysia recorded unhealthy API levels as of 6 pm today. Alor Gajah in Melaka recorded the highest reading at 157, followed by Seremban (155), Negeri Sembilan; Kemaman (153), Terengganu; Banting, Selangor; Temerloh and Balok Baru in Kuantan, Pahang, each at 152; Nilai (146), Negeri Sembilan; and Johan Setia (140), Selangor. Air quality worsens nationwide as Port Dickson hits API 109

KUALA LUMPUR: Port Dickson recorded an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 109 as of 2.30pm today. This was followed by concerning API readings in Johan Setia, Selangor, and Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, which were nearing the unhealthy threshold, with readings of 98 and 90 respectively. According to the Environment Department's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), both locations remain within the moderate range of 51 to 100 but are close to breaching the unhealthy level, which begins at 101. Meanwhile, Banting in Selangor, Nilai in Negri Sembilan, Kota Baru in Kelantan, and Sungai Petani in Kedah recorded readings of 85. Other areas with elevated readings include Seremban, Kuala Terengganu and Temerloh, all registering above 80. Earlier, state executive councillor (Exco) for Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs, S. Veerapan, said the situation was the result of increased hotspot activity in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia. "This phenomenon has been worsened by the dry weather affecting much of the region, including central and southern parts of Peninsular Malaysia, coupled with south-westerly winds. "The Southwest Monsoon began in June 2025 and is expected to continue until September. "Prolonged dry weather is forecast across Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and the Lesser Sunda Islands," he said today. He said that an increase in hotspots is expected in areas prone to fires, particularly peatlands and scrublands.

Haze Alert: Public Warned Against Open Burning - N. Sembilan Exco

SEREMBAN, July 19 (Bernama) -- The people of Negeri Sembilan have been urged to refrain from open burning, which could further deteriorate air quality and affect public health. State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives and Consumers Action Committee chairman S. Veerapan said that although the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in the state remains at a moderate level, the Department of Environment (DOE) will intensify patrols to curb open burning. He added that the risk of open fires is particularly high in plantations and bush areas that are easily flammable during dry weather conditions.

Negeri Sembilan probes workers' dorm fire under Act 446

SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Labour Department (JTKNS) has opened an investigation into a company for suspected non-compliance with the Employees' Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446). The probe follows a fire incident involving 30 container units used as workers' dormitories at Forest Heights two days ago. State Entrepreneurship, Human Resources, Climate Change, Cooperatives, and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman S. Veerapan confirmed that initial checks revealed the accommodation lacked valid certification under Act 446. 'An investigation paper has been initiated under Section 24D of Act 446, and all affected workers have been instructed to move to a certified Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQ),' he said in a statement today. Veerapan noted that Negeri Sembilan currently has 46 certified CLQs, and employers failing to provide their own must select from this list. He reiterated warnings against housing workers in uncertified facilities, stressing zero tolerance for violations. 'I have repeatedly reminded employers to use only certified CLQs. We will take strict action against non-compliance to protect workers' welfare,' he added. No injuries were reported as workers were still on shift during the fire.
