South Korea's premier water music festival S2O Korea makes splash in Gwacheon

From W&W, Dimension, Medvza to KSHMR, global DJs lit up Gwacheon S2O Korea, one of the best-known water-themed music festivals in the country, lit up Gwacheon with energy and excitement on Sunday, drawing massive crowds despite the humid summer heat. Inspired by Thailand's traditional Songkran water festival, S2O made its Korean debut in 2022 and has grown into one of the country's most iconic summer music events. This year's festival took place over the weekend at Seoul Land in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. Although Sunday's weather was hot and cloudy, festivalgoers in colorful summer outfits armed with water guns and waterproof pouches for their smartphones flocked to Seoul Land. The festival featured performances across two main stages: the Welcome Stage near the park entrance and the Main Stage, known for its intense water cannon blasts. The Main Stage was outfitted with three massive screens, offering vibrant visual displays in sync with the music. As the festival continued into early evening — it is scheduled to run until 10 p.m. — the crowd thickened, with more and more people gathering in front of the stage. 'I came to last year's S2O as well, and out of all the water-themed music festivals, S2O definitely uses the most water and has the most spectacular stage setups. I was super satisfied and have been looking forward to this year's too,' said a festivalgoer in her 20s, dressed in a striking red outfit. From around 3 p.m., performances by DJ Soda and Aster & Neo took to the main stage. When water cannons began to fire, adding to the thrill, the audience responded with loud cheers. Sunday's Main Stage lineup featured headline performances by KSHMR, an Indian American DJ known for his signature Indo-inspired rhythms, Dimension, famed for his dreamy melodies, Dutch house duo W&W and Italian house music producer Medvza.

S2O Korea returns with splashing beats

From global EDM stars to signature water-soaked experience, the Songkran-inspired festival to hit Seoul A musical downpour is coming to South Korea, both literally and figuratively. S2O Korea is set to take place July 12–13 at Seoul Land in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. Inspired by Thailand's traditional Songkran water festival, S2O debuted in Korea in 2022. Drawing over 40,000 attendees last year, it has quickly established itself as one of the country's representative summer festivals. This year's S2O Korea lineup is filled with global EDM stars, including Afrojack, KSHMR, Dimension and house hitmaker Meduza. Subtronics, a leading DJ in North America's bass scene and a dubstep powerhouse, will make his Korean debut at the festival. The lineup also includes international and domestic EDM artists such as W&W, Said The Sky, Level Up, Vicetone, Vinai, Retrovision, Alan Shirahama, Soda, AK & Daywalker and Aster & Neo, offering diverse genres from big room and bass to melodic and trap. BEPC, the organizer of S2O Korea, is also the force behind World DJ Festival, another major EDM festival in South Korea. The company recently launched World DJ Festival Japan, signaling its expansion into the global market. 'S2O is a water-themed festival uniquely tailored to the summer season, offering an entirely different kind of joy,' said Kim Eun-sung, CEO of BEPC. 'This year's S2O will be a full sensory experience where music, water and performance come together in harmony— creating a festival that transcends traditional EDM.'

REVEALED: Will ‘world's wettest party' be coming to Perth?

A music event that claims to be the world's wettest party has hit a dry patch in WA. Tang Events had sought support from the City of Perth to bring the S2O Songkran Music Festival to WA. It plans to hold the festival at Langley Park in February and expects 22,500 people to attend at $165 a ticket. Your local paper, whenever you want it. It sought $24,000 in cash and $46,000 in-kind from the city, but the council unanimously voted at Tuesday night's meeting that the city not come to the party. Tang Events' application said S2O Australia was an electronic dance music festival that blended 'high-energy performances with immersive water-play innovations to create visually striking and euphoric experiences'. It originated in Thailand and has held events in Bangkok, China, Tokyo, and, most recently, New York. Tang Events said the Perth event would be the 'flagship show' and reinforce its position on the international festival circuit. Steve Aoki has been touted as one of the performing DJs. Credit: steveaoki Instagram Features of the Perth show would include a line-up of 'globally renowned artists with water-play technology, high powered water cannons and synchronised water effects'. Glenn Watson, speaking on behalf of Tang Events, told the city's briefing session on May 20 the event would have exclusive Asia-Pacific performances by DJs such as Steve Aoki. 'The exclusivity was designed to increase both interstate and international visitation to Perth for the event, in the same way that you might remember Coldplay coming to Perth last year; it was an exclusive nationwide event,' he said. 'The key point of difference for S2O is that it's a contemporary interpretation of Songkran, the Thai New Year's festival, also known as the Water Festival. 'In addition to the world-class DJs and performances that you'd expect at a music festival, patrons that choose to go into the wet zone are basically bombarded with water from jets and cannons. Crowds at the festival would be 'bombarded' with water. Credit: 'This type of event has not been done in Perth or in a developed Western capital city that has a lot more regulations and rules than you'd see in a Thailand-style music festival.' However, the city's assessment panel — comprising three staff — gave the proposal a score of only 57.8 out of 100, saying the attendance estimate relied too heavily on interstate and international attendees, and the event would be held in an already busy period. Its use of water was also considered problematic. 'The excessive use of water during the summer months could be viewed unfavourably by the community and contribute to brand alignment concerns and reputation risk for the city,' the assessment said. 'The panel acknowledged whilst the applicant has engaged a local water management company to facilitate the development and implementation of a water management and sustainability plan for the event, a robust plan is yet to be developed.' Mr Watson said Tang Events was working with Perth-based water management organisation BD Water on management plans. 'We acknowledge the details about the water management and sustainability was not too granular. The purpose of that was to open up a conversation and a dialogue with the city to make sure that it could be done,' he said. The Perth S2O festival was expected to bring in 22,500 people. Credit: He said water would be brought in in tanks, and a flooring system that included drainage was being developed to capture water after it was used. 'Approximately 30 per cent of the water would be captured and be able to be re-used or recycled,' Mr Watson said. Eight other sponsorship applications were approved, including $54,000 for the Laneway Festival Perth 2026, $120,000 cash and $14,000 in-kind for the Channel 7 Christmas Pageant, and $85,000 for the Perth Chinese New Year Fair 2026. A council report said events helped make Perth a 'vibrant and iconic destination'. The city has $1 million set aside in its 2025-26 event sponsorship program.

Karger Publishers Expands Open Access Portfolio for 2025 with Subscribe to Open

The Subscribe to Open pilot program marks its 3rd year at Karger Publishers. 3 journals met threshold to provide Open Access without Article Processing Charges 'It is exciting to explore the potential of Subscribe to Open to enable Open Access (OA) without are thrilled to make more journals OA without costs for readers or authors.' — Beth Bayley, Open Science Manager at Karger Publishers BASEL, SWITZERLAND, March 25, 2025 / / -- In the third year of the publisher's S2O pilot, the journal Developmental Neuroscience has again met its sustainability threshold, while the two new journals in the S2O pilot, European Addiction Research and Neurodegenerative Diseases, have also met their criteria for this Open Access model for 2025. Subscribe to Open refers to a publishing model in which a journal volume can become Open Access if it reaches a certain number of subscriptions or renewals in a given year. In the program's first year at Karger, the 2023 volumes for Developmental Neuroscience and Pediatric Neurosurgery met their targets for OA, while the 2024 and 2025 volumes of Pediatric Neurosurgery did not meet that threshold and are subscription-based, with a paid option to publish any paper as Open Access. Instead of charging authors an APC, publishing costs under S2O are sustained by subscriptions from libraries, leveraging existing funds and infrastructure. If subscriptions are renewed to a level that ensures the journals' sustainability, Karger converts that year's volume to Open Access, making it completely free of barriers to read, share and re-use under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY). 'It is exciting to explore the potential of Subscribe to Open to enable OA without APCs,' states Beth Bayley, Open Science Manager at Karger Publishers. 'APCs are one of the greatest challenges to making life-changing information globally accessible, so we are thrilled to make more journals OA without costs for readers or authors.' With its 'Open for Open' approach, Karger continues to seek ways to publish more Open Access in a way that is sustainable and accessible for all stakeholders.
