This 5-Person Electric Air Taxi Just Completed Its First Piloted Flight
Archer Aviation's flagship air taxi just passed another major milestone on the road to launch. The Midnight eVTOL has completed its first piloted test flight, according to a statement shared by the Silicon Valley firm on Monday. The five-person craft notched more than 400 test flights in 2024 alone, but this is the first time a pilot has been at the controls. More from Robb Report Inside a New Luxury Hotel Nestled in One of Charleston's Charming Historic Neighborhoods A Union Jack Flag That Was Flown at a Historic U.K. Battle Could Fetch Up to $1 Million at Auction A Tourist Damaged Two Terracotta Warriors at China's Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang With Archer's chief test pilot, Jeff Greenwood, at the helm, Midnight cruised at speeds up to 125 mph and reached a maximum altitude of over 1,500 feet. The craft also completed a conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) rather than executing both vertically. Midnight already showcased a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) in the latter half of 2023. 'Flying Midnight felt just like flying the simulator—everything responded exactly as we trained for, which is exactly what you hope for during a test flight,' Greenwood said in a statement. Archer says government regulators and customers have stressed the importance of being able to take off and land both conventionally and vertically in Midnight. Having an aircraft that is capable of both results in greater operational flexibility and also increases safety, according to Archer. 'Midnight's VTOL and CTOL capabilities are a strong differentiator for us as they are critical for delivering an aircraft that can integrate into a wide range of operational scenarios while also providing enhanced safety,' added Archer CEO and founder Adam Goldstein. Equipped with 12 wing-mounted tilting propellers and six battery packs, Midnight will be able to carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds of up to 150 mph. Weighing roughly 6,500 pounds, the aircraft will have a payload capacity of 1,000 pounds and can be charged in minutes. During the next phase of testing, Archer will focus on things like the control responsiveness and stability of Midnight. The firm is also working to get the aircraft certified and into commercial service in both the U.S. and the UAE. The plan is to eventually launch an air-taxi network in New York, providing fliers with the ability to zip from Manhattan to New York's largest airports in five to 10 minutes for about $200. Rival eVTOL builder Joby Aviation is also hoping to get its S4 electric aircraft flying around the Big Apple. The timing of Archer's stateside rollout is still, well, up in the air, but the team expects to start a commercial service in Dubai by the end of this year. Stay tuned. New Xiaomi Watch S4 version uses custom Xring T1 chipset - with Xiaomi's first 4G modem
Lei Jun always has something up his sleeve – Xiaomi announced a new version of the Watch S4 and the bold 'XRING INSIDE' should tell you what's new. This model is called the Xiaomi Watch S4 '15th Anniversary Edition' to celebrate the company's 15th birthday. Xiaomi Watch S4 15th anniversary edition Interestingly, it is powered by an in-house chip called the Xring T1. By far the most interesting part about this chip – this whole watch, in fact – is that the T1 has a 4G LTE modem that was developed by Xiaomi itself. Xiaomi Watch S4 15th Anniversary Edition with Xring T1 Xiaomi claims that it is 35% more efficient than the 4G modem inside the original S4 watch. The new Watch S4 can last up to 9 days with network connectivity (two days longer than the old S4), apparently, and up to 4 days with heavy usage. If you keep the watch connected to your phone, you can get up to 15 days with raise-to-wake or up to 5 days with always-on display. Xiaomi getting into the modem business is potentially a big deal – admittedly, 4G is easier than 5G, but it's a start. The body is made of stainless steel like on the regular S4, but the eSIM model also boasts a forged carbon bezel and a Dragon Glass lens (the original uses regular glass). Other than that, you're still getting a 1.43' 466 x 466px display with 1,500 nits peak global brightness. The new chipset enables an interesting new feature – when controlling the phone's camera remotely, it shows live feed from the camera. It also supports animated wallpaper. Since Xiaomi is also unveiling its first SUV today, it didn't forget about cars – the watch can remotely unlock Xiaomi cars and even open and close the trunk. Source

Subaru's Greatest Ever Road Car Is The STI S210
The S210 is the brand's best handling car yet. The STI S210 could well be the last pure turbocharged, boxer-engined, gasoline powered sports sedan made by Subaru before the model is hybridized. The S210 is based on the WRX S4 sedan but employs upgrades and bespoke parts that elevate this car from ballsy to ballistic. But like all super high achievers, there are conditions—it will be limited to just 500 units, it has no 6-speed manual option, and all are destined for Japanese buyers only. For the present at least. And it also just happens to be one of the most expensive Subarus ever, setting buyers back some ¥8.6 million or around US$60,000. The most expensive was the WRX STI S209 launched in 2019, of which 209 units were sold in the US for $63,995 when new. One sold in October 2023 for $68,500. The S210 gets a massive rear wing. The S210 styling is more subtle than you'd expect with accentuated front bumper brake ducts, blacked out wheel arches, BBS wheels, red STI accents and a massive rear wing which generates downforce above 100 mph. The STI is powered by a 2.4-litre turbocharged boxer engine pumping out 296 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. This time however, the high priced STI comes with a twist—no 6-speed manual option. Yee gads! That's a brave move from STI. This time the car is only offered with a continuously variable transmission which is a gearbox not that popular outside of Japan, especially on high performance models. According to Subaru, the reasoning for going all in for the CVT is to make the S210 a more refined, more mature, more track capable machine. And speaking of track compatibility, this car takes the base S4 sedan and throws the entire STI parts bin at the S210, a bin filled with race-tuned parts from the company's long competition and storied multiple category victories in Germany's famed Nurburgring 24-hour race. For greater cornering rigidity the S210 gets an STI front flexible draw tower bar and stiffeners, rear stabilizer bushes, bespoke ECU and transmission control unit, 6-piston Brembo brakes with drilled rotors and bespoke pads, an STI performance muffler and exhaust pipe, 19-inch Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, ZF electronically-controlled dampers and coil springs, and bespoke drive mode select. The cockpit employs Recaro sports seats. Inside it gets leather 8-way Recaro bucket seats that provide great leg and back support in corners, a bespoke S210 designed dash with red accents, seatbelts and STI badging and stitching, aluminum pedals and a red start/stop switch. It's not as luxurious as say an M3, but the materials used and the styling certainly elevates the cockpit to something approaching the BMW. As we mentioned above the S210 is based on the the STI S4 sedan. So you'd expect the new STI model to feel like a tweaked S4. Not so. At a brief S210 prototype test drive at Izu's Cycle Sport Center south of Tokyo recently, it became blatantly obvious that the new model is totally different. In fact it feels borderless now—it does not feel like a Japanese car. It feels a lot closer to a BMW M3 or an AMG C43 in terms of ride quality and cornering ability. But the S210's equivalent $60,000 is a lot cheaper than the M3's $77,000 or the C43's $67,000. Even though the test drive was held in semi-wet conditions, the S210 launched into corners and negotiated them better and with far greater stability than an M3 or C43 could. Indeed, STI claims the car has 296 hp, but when floored, the S210 feels like it has at least 320 hp or more as acceleration is impressive. The car's combination of superior 4-wheel traction thanks to its rally and race-proven AWD system and Michelin grip, improved twist and bend rigidity and massive Brembo brakes that wipe off speed instantly, the S210 tempts you to push harder in each corner. Critics may question the car's throttle response given its CVT-only offering. But thanks to a tuned ECU, tweaked transmission control unit and new sports exhaust system, turbo lag is basically non-existent, and throttle response is quick as the turbo spools up briskly. And the normally sluggish CVT has been tuned to deliver quicker changes that don't leave the driver wanting for more. The only question is how many hardcore Subaru fans are willing to fork over ¥8.6 million or around $60,000. With the current dollar-yen exchange rate that amount may not sound that much, but in real terms, an ¥8.6 million car feels more like an $80,000 to American buyers in terms of value. Who knows if they aren't able to sell them quickly in Japan, then they might offer the remaining stock to right-hard-drive countries like the UK or Australia.

Sir Martin Sorrell: Trump's tariffs will hammer our business
Sir Martin Sorrell has warned that Donald Trump's tariffs will damage his advertising empire this year after a slowdown in the tech sector hammered profits. The executive chairman of S4 Capital said 2025 would be challenging because of 'significant volatility and uncertainty in global economic policy, particularly tariffs'. 'In geopolitics, US [and] China relations, Russia [and] Ukraine and Iran remain volatile issues and therefore clients are likely to remain cautious,' he warned. Sir Martin, who founded S4 after leaving ad giant WPP seven years ago, blamed macroeconomic conditions for a worsening performance in 2024, when S4 posted a loss of £307m, compared to £14m the previous year. This was driven by a £280m non-cash impairment charge, which the company said reflected trading conditions in the second half of the year and changes to its medium-term outlook. S4, which counts Google and Amazon as clients, has been hit by lower marketing spend by tech firms amid rising interest rates and a broader economic slowdown. The company added that tech giants are investing heavily to expand their artificial intelligence capabilities. As a result, S4's revenues dropped by more than 16pc last year to £848m. The tech slowdown has led to a sharp reversal in fortunes for Sir Martin's company, whose market value peaked at around £5bn in 2021 amid rapid acquisition-fuelled expansion. But shares have since slumped close to a record low, with the company now valued at around £220m. S4 has embarked on a number of cost-cutting measures in a bid to shore up its balance sheet. The company's headcount fell 7pc last year to around 7,200, with bosses adding: 'We will continue to focus on our cost base and will take further action to support profitability.' Despite the widening loss, S4 said it would pay its first ever dividend of 1p per share, amounting to roughly £6.1m. Shares jumped 10pc following the announcement. Sir Martin added that the company expected to benefit from new business in the second half of the year. S4 forecast revenue and operating profit broadly in line with 2024, while net debt is expected to reduce to between £100m and £140m. Fiona Orford-Williams, an analyst at Edison Group, said: 'The market for technology services is particularly affected by attention and budgets being dominated by the current focus on AI. 'This shift in emphasis is part of a wider transition and S4 is itself using AI extensively. Clients are dipping in their toes to deliver use cases that can be further developed, with growing confidence in the use case for copywriting and visualisation.'
