Banyana Banyana close to being ready for Wafcon defence, says Gamede
Bongeka Gamede is confident that Banyana Banyana will be ready to defend their Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) title after a perfect Tri-Nations series. Banyana were crowned champions of the series after beating Botswana 3–2 in the opener and Zambia 2–0 in the final game. While the results confirmed them as the best team in the mini-tournament, they were not at their best and had to dig deep in both matches. They nearly squandered a 3–0 half-time lead against Botswana and had to leave it late to secure the win over Zambia at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville. Banyana Banyana emerged as the winners of the #ThreeNations challenge on Tuesday, a tri-nations tournament that also featured Zambia and Botswana.#LiveTheImpossible @SABC_Sport — Banyana_Banyana (@Banyana_Banyana) June 3, 2025 As such, it took standout individual performances to get them across the line. Jermaine Seoposenwe scored a brace in the opener and the winner in the final match. Gamede also made her mark, scoring a stunning goal from a direct set-piece against the Copper Queens, underlining her versatility as a defender-cum-midfielder. Reflecting on the series, the Denmark-based footballer said team unity had played a vital role in helping them win both matches, particularly the encounter against Zambia. 'I would like to congratulate the girls on their performance. We knew their strengths and how to capitalise on them,' Gamede said, to the Sasol media department. 'I think we tried to make sure they didn't attack us as much as they would have liked. But it wasn't an easy game. 'We made mistakes here and there, but we were able to help each other as a team. Going forward, we also supported each other.' Video Player is loading. With Botswana and Zambia also set to compete at the tournament, facing them now was a valuable learning experience for coach Desiree Ellis and her team. 'I think our chances of doing well at Wafcon are looking very good,' Gamede explained. 'We've played Malawi, Botswana and now Zambia – all of whom will be at Wafcon. 'So they've given us an idea of what the tournament will be like. From here, we'll continue preparing, and I think we'll be ready for Wafcon.'

Mambas bite Bafana B in Cosafa Cup opener
The Bafana Bafana B team taking part in the Cosafa Cup in Bloemfontein got off to a rocky start, losing 1-0 to an energetic Mozambique at Free State Stadium on Wednesday. Star attacker Antonio Sumbane provided the 73rd-minute winner for the Mambas. Both teams, as is the nature of the Southern African competition, are definitely developmental combinations. Hugo Broos's senior Bafana meet Mozambique's first-stringers in a friendly in Polokwane on Tuesday. The senior coach has no Mamelodi Sundowns players available as the Betway Premiership champions prepare for the Club World Cup that starts in the US on June 14, and Broos has picked many new faces as he widens his talent pool. Vela Khumalo, only announced as coach of the South African Cosafa Cup side late last week, had his hastily-arranged squad arrive on Monday, with just two training sessions to their opener. That seemed to show in the overall performance. 🏆 ℂ𝕆𝕊𝔸𝔽𝔸 ℂ𝕌ℙ 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟝 🏆 🗣️ "𝙸𝚝 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝚊 𝚐𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚖𝚊𝚗𝚌𝚎 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝚗𝚘𝚝 𝚐𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚞𝚕𝚝𝚜" Bafana Bafana coach Vela Khumalo reacting to their loss against Mozambique in their opening match. #SABCSportFootball #COSAFACup — SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) June 4, 2025 The South Africans owned the first half but could not take the lead. Khumalo's side waned notably in the second 45 minutes. South Africa skinned Mozambique down the right in the opening 45 minutes, where TS Galaxy fullback Puso Dithejane and Stellenbosch FC attacker Sanele Barns combined well and often ran rampant. Yet the Mambas also had opportunities, notably one early on where lively playmaker Sumbane's cross from the left was spilt by goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa to Baptista, who struck at South Africa's keeper after he had regained his footing. Victor Letsoalo was played through on the left and struck onto the crossbar. Sometimes the South Africans seemed to over-elaborate, though it was fun to watch, Dithejane back-heeling to Barns, taking a return pass and driving over from the edge of the area. 🏆 ℂ𝕆𝕊𝔸𝔽𝔸 ℂ𝕌ℙ 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟝 🏆 ⚽️ ⒼⓄⒶⓁ: The Mambas break the deadlock! 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 🇿🇦 0⃣➖1⃣ 🇲🇿 𝐌𝐨𝐳𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞 🚨 LIVE 📺 SABC Sport | SABC 1 📱 🌐 #SABCSportFootball #COSAFACup — SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) June 4, 2025 Barnes cut a pass back from the right to Dithejane who again struck over, this time from just inside the box. South Africa continued to press back from the change rooms but when Mozambique's flowing front line found their stride their movement troubled the hosts. In the 59th minute right-back Oscar Cherene squared and Sumbane struck first-time onto the crossbar, the rebound ricocheting in off Dithejane. The video assistant referee (VAR) check found an offside and over-ruled the goal. Then Mozambique did take the lead, substitute Valter Daúce in space on the right to hit at goal, the shot parried one-handed by Mbanjwa into the path of Sumbane to gratefully sweep into an open net. South Africa hoped they had a penalty when referee Andrisoa Zafimahatoha of Madagascar blew for a handball with just over 10 minutes of normal time left. The VAR showed Vuyo Letlapa's shot was onto the arm of Cherene, who could not have removed the limb, and the decision was overruled.

‘They come at you': Rabada dares Aussies to sledge him at Lord's after drugs ban
Sledge me at your own peril. That's the blunt message from South African firebrand fast bowler Kagiso Rabada to Pat Cummins' men ahead of a World Test Championship final at Lord's. Just weeks after news emerged that Rabada had failed a drugs test and left the Indian Premier League, the leader of South Africa's attack has lit the fuse for a showdown for world cricket's top prize. 'They [Australian players] come at you, and that gets the best out of me,' Rabada said in an interview with SABC Sport. 'They have been notorious for that over the years, right? So yeah, let's see. 'I think we deserve to be there and I'm excited to see what Australia can bring to us.' It's not the first time Rabada has thrown down the gauntlet to Australia – or found himself in hot water for doing so. The paceman's frosty relationship with Australia stretches back seven years, when he was cited for a mid-pitch shoulder barge on Steve Smith during the explosive 2018 'Sandpapergate' series. Rabada won his appeal against a two-match suspension, to the frustration of the Australian camp in a series brimming with tension. The 30-year-old, who has taken 49 Test wickets against Australia at an average of 23.08, admitted last month to testing positive to cocaine. After flying home from the Indian Premier League for 'personal reasons', Rabada served a one-month suspension, allowing him to line-up against Australia at Lord's for the WTC final, starting next Wednesday in London (June 11).
