Workshop focuses on developing hands-on technical abilities
SAHAM: Saham Vocational College recently completed a forward-thinking summer training programme designed to prepare skilled youth to meet the increasing demands of the job market.
Focused on developing hands-on technical abilities, the initiative offers practical workshops to school students in areas essential to Oman's evolving economy.
Noura al Qamshuai emphasised the strategic goal behind the workshops. "We aim to cultivate a generation of skilled professionals who are prepared to contribute confidently and competently to the workforce. These programmes are tailored to meet real-world demands, not just theoretical knowledge," she said.
One of the standout offerings this year was a workshop on home air conditioning and refrigeration, covering topics such as the mechanical systems of AC units, common technical failures and effective maintenance techniques. These skills are particularly relevant given the high demand for HVAC services in the local market.
The session focused on networking and Internet configuration.
Another engaging session focused on networking and Internet configuration, introducing students to the fundamentals of computer networks, router setup and troubleshooting connection issues. The workshop aimed to provide the participants with the foundational knowledge needed to assist households and small businesses in managing digital connectivity.
In preparation for future innovations, the programme also included a workshop on artificial intelligence, equipping the participants with smart and user-friendly AI tools that can be applied in various technical fields. The training encouraged students to think critically and creatively about how AI can be utilised in everyday problem-solving and future careers.
Saif al Saidi, a parent of one of the participants, commented on the initiative, saying, "These workshops have truly broadened my son's perspective on future career opportunities. He came home discussing fixing devices, setting up networks and even using AI tools. It's not just technical training; it's helping our youth dream bigger, support their families and understand the professions they can aspire to."
By focusing on vocational excellence and innovation, such programmes are not only addressing current labour market gaps, but also inspiring students to pursue technical paths crucial to national development. The initiative reflects Oman's broader vision to empower youth and strengthen the workforce with skilled, job-ready talent.
