The NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships are in full swing, with several field events wrapping up after Day One at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Texas A&M junior pole vaulter Aleksandr Solovev got things rolling in thrilling fashion, capturing the national title for the first time since 1980.
It wasn't easy. The competition came down to his final attempt at 18-11.5 (5.78m), where he edged Kansas junior Ashton Barkdull by just two inches. Solovev saved his best for last. His championship-winning jump was not only his top mark of the season but also broke his own program record.
This leap ranks as the fourth-highest winning mark in NCAA championship history, earning the Aggies 10 points on opening day and placing them in a tie for sixth. With momentum on their side, Coach Pat Henry believes his team has a real shot at finishing in the top ten when the meet concludes.
