The NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships are in full swing, with several field events wrapping up after Day One at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Texas A&M junior pole vaulter Aleksandr Solovev got things rolling in thrilling fashion, capturing the national title for the first time since 1980.
It wasn't easy. The competition came down to his final attempt at 18-11.5 (5.78m), where he edged Kansas junior Ashton Barkdull by just two inches. Solovev saved his best for last. His championship-winning jump was not only his top mark of the season but also broke his own program record.
This leap ranks as the fourth-highest winning mark in NCAA championship history, earning the Aggies 10 points on opening day and placing them in a tie for sixth. With momentum on their side, Coach Pat Henry believes his team has a real shot at finishing in the top ten when the meet concludes.

Karen Weekly discusses college softball tampering, NIL
Karen Weekly discusses college softball tampering, NIL Tennessee softball lost a student-athlete to the NCAA transfer portal following the 2025 season. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Pannell committed to Texas Tech on Thursday. She appeared in 124 games, including 122 starts, for the Lady Vols from 2023-25. Following Pannell's transfer, Tennessee head coach Karen Weekly discussed the NCAA transfer portal and NIL on a social media post Friday. "I think we can all agree on 2 things: 1) women making money in sports is awesome and long overdue; 2) contacting players (directly or indirectly) before their season ends and signing them to NIL deals before they enter the portal is wrong," Weekly said. "Money isn't the issue - tampering is!" Pannell recorded a .351 batting average, 25 home runs, 102 RBIs, 83 runs, 124 hits, 44 walks and 11 stolen bases in three seasons at Tennessee. The Lady Vols advanced to the Women's College World Series in 2023 and 2025, while winning the SEC regular-season championship from 2023-24 and the league's tournament title in 2023. (AP) — Florida State shortstop Alex Lodise has been named winner of the Dick Howser Trophy as the national player of the year, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced Friday. Lodise is the third player in program history to win the Howser, joining J.D. Drew in 1997 and Buster Posey in 2008. The award has been presented annually since 1987 and is named after former FSU All-American and head coach Dick Howser. Advertisement Lodise was named Atlantic Coast Conference player and defensive player of the year, and he also is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award as the top amateur player in the nation and Brooks Wallace Award as the nation's top shortstop. Lodise ranked among the national leaders with a .394 batting average, 17 home runs, 18 doubles, 68 RBIs and .705 slugging percentage. He committed only five errors on 216 fielding chances (.977) and was part of 34 double plays. The junior from Jacksonville, Florida, had at least one hit in 48 of his 58 games. He had 31 multi-hit games and 13 games with three or more hits. Among his season highlights was hitting for the cycle in a March 25 game against Florida — finishing it with a walk-off grand slam. ___ AP college sports:

Ohio State basketball unveils new Value City Arena court design
Ohio State basketball unveils new Value City Arena court design Out with the old, in with the new. On Friday, days after teasing a new court design and reminiscing about hardwood designs of the past, the Ohio State basketball program unveiled a new, sleek look for the upcoming season and beyond. Gone are the plain wood colored floorboards with accented scarlet and gray. The new look features a main gray pallet for the base floorboard color with red accenting things on the baselines, out of bounds, and lane areas, all with a pop of pure white outlining the shapes and letters. It also appears as though the "O" or stained color of Ohio at midcourt will be replaced by "Buckeyes," which will be a first in program history. In case you didn't get a chance to view the new design, the Ohio State Hoops "X" account (formerly Twitter), unveiled the new design via a creative team post on Friday. Have a look at the past, and through to the design coming to an arena near you soon, all set to some heart-thumping music and radio calls from years before. We like it here at Buckeyes Wire. It's not a traditional look per se, but it does bring things into today with a more progressive design that other programs are going to.
