Deputy Minister: S'wak eyes 10,000 technologists by 2030 to propel green ambitions

The Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister said human capital development is a top priority in the state's Energy Transition Plan, Hydrogen Economy Roadmap and Sustainability Blueprint. 'We need to train a lot more technologists. By 2030, we are targeting at least 10,000 technologists and beyond that, up to 80,000. 'At present, Sarawak has over 8,000 trained technologists,' he told a press conference after officiating the Sustainable and Valuable Energy Conference (SAVE) 2025 on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here yesterday. Dr Hazland expressed confidence the target is achievable, noting that Sarawak produces between 3,500 and 4,000 SPM school-leavers annually. 'If we can focus half of these SPM school-leavers to take up Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses in our universities and higher education institutions, we are will be on track to produce many more technicians,' he said. He added that the free tertiary education at five Sarawak-owned universities, slated to begin next year, would help meet the state's manpower needs. On renewable energy initiatives, Dr Hazland said Sarawak is diversifying beyond its 70 per cent clean hydropower generation by developing floating solar farms at its major dams ― Batang Ai, Murum, Bakun and Saleh ― scheduled for completion by 2030. 'From these four dams, we have the potential to produce an additional capacity of 2 gigawatts solar energy,' he added. He also revealed that Sarawak has identified 12 rivers with potential for cascading dams, with the first phase involving four rivers expected to generate another 2 gigawatts by 2030. In addition, combined gas cycle plants ― utilising 70 per cent liquefied natural gas (LNG) and 30 per cent hydrogen ― are being developed in Bintulu and Miri, capable of producing 1.5 gigawatts. 'Together, these projects are expected to raise total generation capacity from the current 5.7 gigawatts to around 10 to 11 gigawatts by 2030, and 15 gigawatts by 2050.' Jointly organised by the Association of Professional Technicians and Technologists (APTT) and Korea South-East Power (KOEN), the conference will feature cutting-edge technologies, progressive policy frameworks, and innovative business models that promote sustainable, economically viable, and socially inclusive energy systems. Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate the opening ceremony. 'Through this programme, we are collaborating with Korean energy experts to introduce their technologies and services in Sarawak. 'Our goal is to foster knowledge transfer, promote renewable energy and explore new solutions beyond solar and hydro,' APTT chairman Ts Ir Ahmad Zawawi Kasmin told The Borneo Post at APTT office here today. Around 300 participants are expected to attend the two-day event, which will include keynote addresses by both local and international experts. Among the featured speakers is Dr SungHun Lee, principal researcher at the Korea Institute of Materials Science, who will present a joint KIMS-Doosan Enerbility study on the development of high-performance thermal barrier coatings for gas turbine components, designed to endure extreme temperatures and corrosive environments. Another highlight is a presentation by Seokhwan Jung of the Innovative Small Modular Reactor (i-SMR) Development Agency, who will introduce small modular nuclear reactor technology – an emerging alternative to conventional solar and wind energy. Other invited speakers include KOEN Sooneon Kwon; Ir Dr Angelia Liew from the Sarawak Premier's Office; Jayhee Suhr, International Cooperation Manager at the Korea Nuclear Association; Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab of the Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications, Sarawak; Dr Taejoo Oh of IAM Korea; Joogmyung Paik of Asian Power Energy Corp, Korea; Dr Ng Sing Mak of Sarawak Energy Berhad; Jongun Park of Power Tech Solution, Korea; Joosuk Kim of Heat Integrated Static Equipment, Korea; and James Chong Myoung Bae of HFS Heavy Industries, Malaysia. The event will also feature Business-to-Business (B2B) sessions with Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), offering Malaysian entrepreneurs opportunities to explore joint ventures and sign memoranda of understanding (MoUs). 'The idea is to bring these expert Korean SMEs to join the conference on August 12, with the aim of signing several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) thereafter,' said Ahmad Zawawi. In conjunction with SAVE 2025, APTT and the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) will co-host the MBOT Borneo High-Tea on August 13 at 2.30pm, also at the Imperial Hotel, bringing together MBOT members from across Malaysia. Ahmad Zawawi added that the conference comes at a timely moment as Sarawak advances its ambition to become a regional renewable energy hub. 'With Sarawak's agenda to generate 10 megawatts by 2030 and 15 megawatts by 2035, this is where APTT can help by bringing in investors and expertise. 'And by bringing them, we can have a transfer of knowledge between the outsiders in Sarawak. 'So by the end of the day, it will benefit Sarawak itself and come out to uplift our economy for Sarawak itself,' he said. Registration is open until August 11, so secure your spot now at Also present at today's press conference were ValourTech Machineries Sdn Bhd Managing Director Che Mohammad Nizam Che Kamaruddin, APTT's Southern Region Liaison Officer Mohamad Fahmi Ibrahim, APTT Deputy Secretary and Associate Professor Ts Monica Wessy, as well as APTT Lead Training and Development Sector Ts Ir Dr Kismet Hong Ping. lead SAVE 2025 Sustainable and Valuable Energy
