Sioux City schools' free summer meal program begins June 9

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Sioux City Community School District will once again be offering its free summer meal program beginning on June 9. According to SCCSD, the Summer Food Service Program will begin on June 9 and be offered at seven different locations. Meals must be eaten on site. All sites open on June 9 and will serve until either July 3 or August 1. All sites will be closed on July 4. Some sites may close at a different date depending on demand. SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Five years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world, ruining prom plans for the Sioux City Community School District's (SCCSD) class of 2020. Now, they're getting a second chance. The Sioux City Public Schools Foundation announced Thursday that it will be holding a 'Rewrite the Night' event for SCCSD high school students who had their prom canceled by the coronavirus. It will be held on Saturday, June 28, at the Anthem inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Briar Cliff Univerisity holds inauguration for 13th president 2020 alumni of East High, North High and West High will be able to attend alone or with a date. There will be a live band, dancing, a cash bar, and a photo booth, per a release. 'Prom is such a special milestone, and it's important to give the class of 2020 the celebration they missed out on,' Karen Harrison, Development Director for the Sioux City Public Schools Foundation, said in a statement. 'This night is about providing Sioux City alums with an evening of connections, fun, and memories they missed out on due to a worldwide pandemic. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration held in Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Members of the Sioux City community were able to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday night. For more than 40 years, the songs and words of the remembrance of MLK Jr. have rang out through Siouxland. On Monday night, that event took place at Restoration Church. Organizers say it's important to never forget what Dr. King did for civil rights in this country. SCCSD board addresses immigration and deportation concerns 'Such a time as this is so important that we don't forget about the purpose of Doctor Martin Luther King's dreams: to bring about peace and unity,' program chair Sandra Pearson said. 'And of course, during this season, we definitely need peace and definitely need unity.' Dr. Terry Murrell, president of Western Iowa Tech Community College, was the keynote speaker during the event.
