IEX share price crashes 23% to hit 52-week low. What's behind the fall?
Shares of the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) nosedived on Thursday, plunging nearly 23% to hit a 52-week low of 144.65 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), as investors reacted sharply to a game-changing regulatory sharp fall came just hours after the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) issued an order approving the phased implementation of market coupling, which is a structural overhaul of India's power trading landscape that could fundamentally reshape IEX's business model and erode its longstanding market its late-Wednesday directive, the CERC said the rollout would begin with the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) segment using a 'round-robin' format to initiate centralised price discovery. The first phase is scheduled for launch by January CHANGES WITH MARKET COUPLING? Currently, electricity prices in India's spot power markets are discovered independently on multiple exchanges—a system that has worked in IEX's favour. The company currently enjoys a commanding 90%+ market share in both the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) and Real-Time Market (RTM), which together make up the bulk of its revenues. In FY24 alone, DAM volumes crossed 73 billion units, while RTM volumes saw a 19% year-on-year coupling, however, removes this competitive advantage by routing all price discovery through a single central clearing engine, operated by the Grid Controller of India. That means IEX and its smaller competitors like PXIL and HPX will no longer compete on price efficiency, effectively levelling the playing field and cutting into IEX's pricing power, margins, and volume stickiness."This isn't a drill anymore. Market coupling is no longer just a theoretical risk. It is now imminent," said Harshal Dasani, Business Head at INVasset PMS. 'This fundamentally alters the market structure and puts pressure on IEX's revenue model. Investors will now re-rate the stock with a structurally weaker outlook.'While the CERC has pitched the move as one aimed at improving transparency, efficiency, and grid optimisation, market participants are more focused on the potential downside: a hit to trading volumes, loss of operational edge, and a serious dent in IEX's valuation sentiment reflected those stock hit its lower circuit early in the trading day, triggering heavy sell-offs and wiping out a significant chunk of its market capitalisation in just a few participants are also bracing for muted commentary when the company announces its Q1FY26 results later today. Analysts expect management to address how IEX plans to adapt to the new regime, defend its platform stickiness, and explore possible diversification to mitigate regulatory proposed phased rollout will first test coupling across RTM, DAM, and Security Constrained Economic Dispatch (SCED) over a three-month pilot. If successful, it could lead to full-scale integration across market segments, permanently altering India's short-term electricity trade The views, opinions, recommendations, and suggestions expressed by experts/brokerages in this article are their own and do not reflect the views of the India Today Group. S. Korea, Czech Republic hold high-level supply chain, energy dialogue in Seoul
South Korea and the Czech Republic held a high-level bilateral supply chain and energy dialogue Monday, as the two sides seek to deepen cooperation in various sectors, including trade, eco-friendly energy and nuclear power plants, Seoul's industry ministry said. Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun and his Czech counterpart, Lukas Vlcek, met in Seoul for the second bilateral SCED and discussed measures to expand cooperation in trade, supply chain, advanced industries, carbon-free energy and nuclear power plants, according to the ministry. In the meeting, the two sides assessed their negotiations for a South Korean consortium building two nuclear plants in Czech's southern region of Dukovany were proceeding smoothly. Czech has been negotiating contract terms with the consortium, led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, to finalize the agreement for the estimated 24 trillion-won ($16.6 billion) project by March. To further bolster cooperation in the field, Ahn and Vlcek discussed joining hands for research and development projects and fostering talent for the nuclear energy sector. The ministers also exchanged opinions on establishing cooperation centers for collaboration in the fields of battery, future mobility and robotics, according to Ahn's office. Additionally, they signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the semiconductor industry and agreed to work together to develop clean hydrogen energy technologies. On the sidelines of Monday's meeting, South Korea and the Czech Republic jointly hosted a business conference to promote bilateral investment. "This year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the 10th anniversary of striking a strategic partnership," Ahn noted. The minister further expressed hopes for the two sides to "successfully strike a final deal for the nuclear power plant project in Dukovany to advance the bilateral ties closer to another level," he added.
