New online weight loss clinic aims to tackle obesity with support

An online weight loss clinic aims to tackle obesity with online support. The Lotus Weight Loss Clinic, founded by James Reynolds, from Newport, has been operating online since February 2025, to provide accessible weight loss support across Wales. Mr Reynolds, who has a background in community pharmacies and GP surgeries, was inspired to start the clinic by his family's long-standing commitment to healthcare. His father and grandfather ran a dental clinic in Newport for over 60 years. Mr Reynolds said: "Their commitment to serving the local community shaped my own values and ultimately guided the creation of Lotus — a service designed to make weight loss treatment safe, affordable, and easy to access to the people of South Wales and beyond." The clinic, registered with the Care Quality Commission, operates entirely online to ensure expert, affordable weight loss support is easily accessible. All prescriptions are dispensed through a UK partner pharmacy and posted to patients with free next day delivery. Mr Reynolds has a clinical diploma, an independent prescribing qualification, and holds the globally recognised SCOPE certification in obesity management. He said: "My focus has been on helping people with weight management issues. "I hold the globally recognised SCOPE certification in obesity management, and previously worked for one of the UK's largest online weight loss clinics — experience that highlighted the need for a more cost-effective, compassionate model here in Wales." The clinic is supported by a dedicated team of healthcare professionals from South Wales, including pharmacist prescribers Alex Gibbins and Paul John, and registered nurse Grace Reynolds, who is also Mr Reynolds' sister. The clinic is active on social media, with growing communities on Instagram and Facebook. Their focus is on education, providing expert tips on weight management and a weekly "Healthy Recipe of the Week." Mr Reynolds said: "We hope to break the stigma around obesity and reverse some of the trends that we are predicting in the UK. "By 2035 almost half the population will be overweight or obese." He also mentioned the inspiration he drew from his role in setting up mass vaccination centres around Newport, which was a "scary but exciting challenge and a real privilege to serve my local community during such a critical time." The clinic's telephone lines are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and they have a live chat on their website which runs 24/7.

San Diego County district attorney highlights successes in annual report

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan released her office's annual report Tuesday, touting new programs and initiatives plus the number of felony crimes prosecuted last year. 'This past year, we obtained justice for victims of domestic violence, human trafficking, hate crimes, organized retail theft, fentanyl poisoning, environmental and consumer fraud, elder fraud, sexual predators and many more,' DA Stephan stated. In 2024, the DA's office prosecuted more than 2,600 assaults, including stalking, making it the crime with the highest number of felony prosecutions in the report. 5 arrested after deadly smuggling incident off San Diego coast; girl remains missing Drug-related offenses came in second at 1,320 prosecutions in the county, and theft/embezzlement at third with just over 960. The report also mentioned several highly publicized cases, including that of former TikTok star, Ali Abulaban, the man convicted of murdering his wife, Ana, and her new partner, Rayburn Barron in an East Village high-rise apartment. Abulaban, who went by the name 'JinnKid' on TikTok, fell from grace when a jury of 12 found him guilty of two counts of first-degree murder last May. In September, he was sentenced to a total prison term of 50 years-to-life plus two terms of life without the possibility of parole. Also mentioned in the report was the case of Christopher Schmittel, a 19-year-old who was convicted of killing two people and injuring two others after crashing onto Torrey Pines State Beach. Prior to the crash, authorities said Schmittel was driving between 100 and 130 miles an hour through Riverside, Orange and San Diego counties — all while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, Xanax and what were believed to be psychedelic mushrooms. In addition to the cases of Abulaban and Schmittel, the DA detailed five other significant cases in the annual report. DA Stephan also highlighted new programs and initiatives launched by her office last year. They included SCOPE, a new program in East County for people suffering from substance use disorder and severe mental illness who would normally not qualify for Drug Court or Behavioral Health Court. The DA's Office formed a historic partnership with the Attorney General of the Mexican State of Baja California, the State of Baja California Justice Center for Women and the DA's One Safe Place: The North County Family Justice Center. The partnership allows victims of domestic violence and other crimes to access services on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border to ensure safety where they are most comfortable getting help. Another achievement highlighted in the report was regarding the topic of public camping ordinances as a way to combat homelessness in the county. In City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, the DA's Appellate Division wrote amicus briefs about the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on public camping bans locally in San Diego County. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Investigation under the DA's Office completed more than 33,000 'investigative tasks,' conducted over 2,900 interviews and executed 445 search warrants last year. Sarawak forms special unit to advance gender equality, says Fatimah

Fatimah (third right) receives memento from Lim, as Zarinah (third left) and others look on. – Photo from Sarawak Public Communications Unit KUCHING (April 22): A special unit on gender equality was established earlier this year under the Sarawak Women and Family Department (JWKS), said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah. The Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister stated that the unit's formation reflects the Sarawak government's commitment to addressing gender equality issues, particularly in efforts to empower women. 'There are many others who are doing this, so we benchmark best practices within the country as well as outside the country. 'So basically, what will be the main role this year? The main role, as I said, is about looking at gender equity. Gender equity in various fields, in education, in politics, from every perspective,' she said after the International Women's Day (IWD) 2025 celebration at hotel here yesterday. She also shared that her Ministry will collaborate with Asian Women's Leadership University College (AWLUC) as a strategic partner. On another matter, Fatimah said the women's leadership chair at Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus has been approved to support research and policy development on women in leadership. 'We are fine-tuning its operations and programmes,' she added. In her speech, Fatimah highlighted that women now make up over 47 per cent of Sarawak's labour force, with significant representation in the services and public sectors. She further noted that the number of women in senior leadership positions – both in government and in the private sector – is steadily increasing, although there is still much room for growth. 'Despite this progress, we are also aware of the persistent challenges. Gender pay gaps remain an issue, particularly in the private sector and informal employment,' she said. The event was organised by Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE) in collaboration with Asian Women's Leadership University College, the Sarawak Department of Women and Family and the Leadership Institute of Sarawak State Civil Service. Also present were Women's Leadership University College co-founder Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar and SCOPE chief executive officer Joseph Lim.

Scancell shares up 6% after NHS partnership for fast-track cancer vaccine trial

Patients with an advanced type of skin melanoma in England will be given expedited access to a new vaccine being developed by Scancell as part of a National Health Service (NHS) clinical trial. UK-based biotech Scancell developed its off-the-shelf DNA vaccine – dubbed iSCIB1+ – to help improve the recognition of cancer cells by the patient's immune system, which enhances response to immunotherapy treatments. The vaccine uses a needle-free injection device system and is administered for up to 85 weeks. Shares in London-listed Scancell were up 6% at market open today (14 April) following the news. The company has a market cap of £102.1m. The clinical trial (NCT04079166) is part of the NHS Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad (CVLP), a framework launched in May 2024 to help fast-track eligible patients into studies at nearby hospitals evaluating vaccines against cancers. It is part of a government push to boost the medical research landscape in the UK. The Phase II study, called SCOPE, is already underway and is slated to enrol more than 140 patients. The first referrals for patients who are part of the CVLP fast-track are expected next month. Southampton Clinical Trials Unit has agreed to be the trial site for the CVLP partnership with Scancell. Scancell stated that data from one of the cohorts in the trial, who received a first iteration of the vaccine alongside two checkpoint inhibitors, demonstrated an 80% progression-free survival (PFS) and 20% complete response rate (CR). Other cohorts are testing the latest generation of the vaccine, in addition to evaluating an intradermal administration route. The first clinical data from iSCIB1+ is expected in mid-2025. Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, accounting for around 4% of all new cancer cases. Around half of melanoma patients respond to standard care of immunotherapy, but those who do not are at higher risk of cancer progression. iSCIB1+, developed using Scancell's Immunobody DNA vaccine platform, targets activated antigen-presenting cells via CD64 and activates T cells. According to the biotech, this creates an immune memory that prevents the cancer from recurring. The SCOPE trial is the latest expansion of the CVLP. Its debut last year marked the start of a clinical trial sponsored by BioNTech that is fast-tracking access to the company's personalised mRNA vaccine against bowel cancer in an ongoing study. The NHS stated that more than 350 patients have been referred for consideration to date. 'It's incredibly exciting that the NHS is expanding its world-leading programme so more patients with different types of cancer could benefit from the development of new vaccines that could stop their cancer coming back,' said Professor Peter Johnson, the NHS' national cancer director. 'We want to ensure as many eligible NHS patients as possible have access to these vital trials, which is why we are working with a range of industry partners as more studies get up and running to ensure patients are fast-tracked to a vaccine that could transform lives.' Scancell's chief medical officer Dr Nermeen Varawalla said: 'Cancer vaccines have the potential to transform immunotherapy, redefine treatment options and ultimately save lives. "Recent clinical data has demonstrated that our potent, tumour-targeted 'off-the-shelf' cancer vaccine delivers strong efficacy, with the potential for meaningful long-term survival benefits in patients with advanced metastatic melanoma.' "Scancell shares up 6% after NHS partnership for fast-track cancer vaccine trial" was originally created and published by Pharmaceutical Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
