200 Saudis Honoured With King Abdulaziz Medal for Organ Donation
Over 540,000 Saudis have pledged posthumous organ donation via Tawakkalna as national transplant rates continue to rise. King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has authorised the presentation of the King Abdulaziz Medal of Third Class to 200 Saudi citizens in recognition of their life-saving contributions to organ donation, either during their lifetime or following brain death. The decision reflects a national commitment to advancing organ transplantation and honouring those who play a critical role in saving lives. According to the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT), 1,706 organ donations were carried out in 2024, representing a 4.9% increase from the previous year. Of these, 1,284 were kidney transplants and 422 were liver transplants. The number of deceased donors also grew, with 393 organs transplanted from individuals after brain death—a 12.3% rise compared to 2023. Public participation has also expanded significantly. The number of individuals who registered their intent to donate organs after death through the Tawakkalna app reached 540,346 by the end of 2024. The government continues to encourage citizens to join the donor registry, citing the transformative impact one donor can have on multiple lives. The King Abdulaziz Medal, awarded by royal decree, is one of the Kingdom's highest civilian honours. By bestowing it on organ donors, the Kingdom aims to promote a culture of medical generosity and raise awareness of the importance of posthumous and living organ donation.

Commenting on the win, he said: 'This is the culmination of a lifetime's work to perfect our haggis recipe. 'I've spent years watching, tasting, tweaking and learning from others and I'm absolutely thrilled to be lifting the World Championship – it's a dream come true.' Nigel's haggis won the Scottish Championship ten years ago. And he is determined not to change the recipe as he battled the best in the country for the world title. However Nigel teased foodies with a sneak peek into his award-winning formula. He revealed: 'Let's just say lamb fat probably helps sweeten the haggis and give it broader appeal. "But after a lifetime spent perfecting the recipe, I'll keep the rest a secret.' Nigel hailed his 24-strong team at Wemyss Bay who work to ensure that his haggis is enjoyed by customers across the UK. The proud butcher added: "Haggis is no longer a Burns Night and burst product.' I tried top restaurant's new haggis sushi, it should be disgusting but it works 'It is a versatile foodstuff used to create a multitude of haggis products enjoyed throughout the year. 'It's one of Scotland's most iconic products and this World Haggis Championship title is the one that every butcher in the country aspires to. 'This means so much to me. It literally is a lifetime's achievement – I'm so honoured, so humbled and so thrilled.' Louise Harley from championship sponsor Grampian Oat Products added her congratulations to McCaskie's after playing her part on the judging panel. 2 Third-generation owner of McCaskie's Butchers Nigel Ovens is all smiles Credit: © Perthshire Picture Agency She said: 'It was an honour to be part of such a prestigious event as both a judge and a sponsor.' Resonance Consultancy assessed the livability, lovability and prosperity of each city to determine the top locations. Edinburgh and Glasgow were both named in the top 30 this year. Coming in at number 18, the Scottish capital was hailed by researchers for its "Gothic architecture" and arts and culture scene. It was ranked sixth for its world-renowned university and second for its air quality. Resonance Consultancy said: "Edinburgh has long enchanted creative souls with its UNESCO World Heritage-designated Gothic architecture, moody weather and the legacy of the literary masters who've flocked here for both. "But a growing appreciation of the city's arts programming (long powered by the storied University of Edinburgh and the sixth-most educated citizenry in Europe) has inspired hotel investment to accommodate tourists and talent. "The renovated Scottish National Gallery project reopened two years ago to showcase the Scottish collection right in the heart of the city, while the upstart Hidden Doors Festival takes over unused spaces for art shows for a third year. "The city's world-famous Edinburgh Festival Fringe will be bigger than ever this year, fuelled by increased federal funding." Meanwhile, the city of Glasgow was named the 28th best city in Europe by researchers. It was ranked sixth for educational attainment and fourth for air quality. Inside little-known seaside spot right next to the country's most iconic sites Resonance Consultancy praised its "working-class authenticity" and thriving culture scene. They said: "Glasgow powers to its Top 100 ranking on the strength of education, with the planet's #6 spot for educated citizenry and a world-renowned university founded in 1451, the fourth oldest in the English-speaking world (ranked #14 in Europe). "The University of Glasgow counts economist Adam Smith and U.S. Founding Father James Wilson as alumni. And the world is taking notice. "Tech start-ups hungry for cheap space and talent are drawn to the city's working-class authenticity over pricier European capitals, even though the business investment metrics have yet to reflect the influx. Glasgow ranks #42 in our Large Companies subcategory and a middling #94 for GPD Per Capita. "Still, the city is among the UK's fastest-rising property markets and new hotels are planned for the rest of the decade, with the recently opened The Address Glasgow now welcoming guests. But it's not like Glasgow has gone corporate. "This is the home of Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the National Theatre of Scotland, and Glasgow is still buzzing from its 2020 designation as the U.K.'s top cultural and creative city by the European Commission." Elsewhere, a tiny seaside town with stunning beaches was crowned the best place to live in Scotland. The Sunday Times recently revealed its annual list of the top places to live in Britain. North Berwick in East Lothian was hailed for its unbeatable combination of lovely beaches, quality schools and thriving independent businesses.
