Police say 8 killed, 3 injured at nightclub in Ecuador as violence surges
Quito (Ecuador), Aug 10 (AP) A shooting at a nightclub in Ecuador on Sunday killed eight people and injured three others in the latest violent incident to hit the spiralling South American country, authorities said. The shooting took place in the rural area of Santa Lucía in the coastal province of Guayas, considered one of the country's most dangerous. Seven of the victims, who were between 20 and 40 years old, died at the club and the eighth one at a hospital, according to a police statement. Authorities said the heavily armed suspects arrived on motorcycles and in two vehicles. It wasn't immediately known what prompted the shooting, which came two days after gunmen attacked a boat near El Oro province along the country's southwest coast. Four people were killed in that incident and several others remain missing after suspects launched explosives at the boat. Dozens of people have been killed in recent months, most of them in four of Ecuador's coastal provinces: El Oro, Guayas, Manabí and Los Ríos. They all remain under a state of emergency. Authorities have blamed the wave of violence on disputes among organised crime groups linked to transnational drug cartels that have expanded their operations, especially in the Pacific region, where drugs are shipped to Central America, the United States and Europe. More than 4,600 people have been killed so far this year in the country of some 18 million inhabitants. Last year, nearly 7,000 killings were reported, down from more than 8,000 in 2023, a record number. Booker Prize winner Kiran Desai up for the award again with long-awaited novel
London, Jul 29 (AP) Indian author Kiran Desai, who won the Booker Prize and then didn't publish a novel for almost two decades, is up for the award again with her long-awaited follow-up. 'The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny," the 677-page tale of two young Indians making their way in the United States, is one of 13 books announced Tuesday as semifinalists for the prestigious 50,000-pound ($67,000) prize. The contenders include authors from nine countries on four continents. It's Desai's first novel since 'The Inheritance of Loss," which won the Booker in 2006. Two previous finalists are up for the prize again: UK writer Andrew Miller, for 'The Land in Winter," and Hungarian-British writer David Szalay for 'Flesh". Tash Aw, who has been a semifinalist twice before, will be the first Malaysian winner if he takes the prize for 'The South". Five of the contenders are from Britain: Miller, Szalay, Natasha Brown ('Universality"), Jonathan Buckley ('One Boat") and Benjamin Wood ('Seascraper"). Books by US writers in the running include Susan Choi's 'Flashlight," Katie Kitamura's 'Audition" and Ben Markovits' 'The Rest of Our Lives." Also on the list are 'Misinterpretation" by Albanian-American Ledia Xhoga, 'Love Forms" by Trinidad's Claire Adam, and 'Endling," a debut novel by Canadian-Ukrainian opera librettist Maria Reva. 'The 13 longlisted novels bring the reader to Hungary, Albania, the north of England, Malaysia, Ukraine, Korea, London, New York, Trinidad and Greece, India and the West Country," said Irish novelist Roddy Doyle, chair of a five-member judging panel that includes actor Sarah Jessica Parker. 'All, somehow, examine identity, individual or national, and all, I think, are gripping and excellent," he said. Founded in 1969, the Booker Prize has a reputation for transforming writers' careers and is open to novels from any country published in the UK and Ireland. Last year's winner was 'Orbital," by British writer Samantha Harvey. A list of six finalists will be announced Sept 23, and this year's winner will be crowned on Nov 10 at a ceremony in London. French court upholds some of Syrian ex-leader Bashar Assads legal protections
Agency: PTI Paris, Jul 25 (AP) France's highest court on Friday ruled that ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad had head of state immunity while he was in office and couldn't be prosecuted on allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity. But the Cour de Cassation said that since Assad is no longer in power, 'new arrest warrants may have been or may be issued against him for acts that may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity". The decision is a blow for activists who had hoped the court would set aside the head of state immunity, a decision that could have had far-reaching consequences for other leaders accused of atrocities.
